3 Master of Nursing This advanced, highly flexible course is designed to get ambitious registered nurses where they want to be - whether that s filling a senior role as a multi-skilled all-rounder, a specialist in a variety of clinical settings, a healthcare researcher, educator, manager or policy leader. This course prepares suitably qualified registered nurses with leadership skills to plan, implement, coordinate and evaluate health care, as well as formulate policy for a diverse and multicultural society. You will be well equipped to contribute to the health of individuals, families, communities and the development of the profession on completion of the Master of Nursing at Monash University. Course Code 1250 CRICOS Code B Suitable for Registered nurses wishing to undertake advanced nursing studies Benefits Graduates are employed in a wide range of general and specialist clinical, educational and healthcare environments, in senior positions. 1.5 years full-time 3 years part-time First Semester (March), Second Semester (July) Berwick, Clayton, Peninsula Exit points Students wishing to exit this course may apply to graduate with one of the following, provided they have satisfied the requirements for that award: Graduate Certificate of Nursing Graduate Diploma of Nursing Applicants should have a Bachelor of Nursing or equivalent with a high level of achievement, and relevant nursing registration (eg Registered Nurse with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency) or equivalent. Applicants who wish to undertake some specialist pathways of study may be required to have registration with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency and appropriate clinical employment in an approved clinical agency. Course structure Students may undertake the course in one of three ways: coursework units only (72 points). coursework units (48 points) and a project (24 points) involving research into an aspect of nursing which enhances nursing practice and patient care. Students submit a report of approximately 15,000 words which must meet the standards required for publication. coursework units (36 points) and a minor thesis (36 points) involving in-depth, systematic research into an aspect of nursing which enhances nursing practice and patient care. Students submit an original report of approximately 25,000 words in length which will lead to publication. What will I study? Courses of study are individually planned according to each student s career path plan. Students are encouraged to discuss a range of options with the course coordinator when constructing an individual program of study. There are both generic and speciality pathways available. This degree, with limited pathway options is suitable for international students. Students studying in Australia with Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia registration will be able to undertake a clinical specialist pathway of study within the degree, giving them the opportunity to develop specialist knowledge and skills in clinical practice. Career outcomes Graduates of the Master of Nursing and Monash University are employed in clinical specialist roles in medical and surgical, aged care, critical care, emergency, palliative care, paediatrics, primary health care and mental health clinical environments. Graduates also use the skills and knowledge developed in the Master of Nursing to undertake advanced roles in clinical nursing, leadership and policy development, nursing education, management and research. To enter a specialist pathway, Australian Registered Nursing students may be required to work an average of two to three days a week within the speciality (or with contact with patients/clients from the speciality) for the duration of the course. Not all specialist pathways require employment, i.e. disaster and emergency management, education, refugee health and primary health care, making these pathways ideal for international students. 4 Career outcomes Master of Advanced Health Care Practice (Advanced Clinical Midwifery) Graduates of this program are prepared for appointments to senior midwifery leadership positions and for roles in midwifery education. This innovative new course will provide experienced midwives with the opportunity to gain a Masters level qualification that enhances their professional practice and provides the widest range of options for the future. The Advanced Clinical Midwifery course prepares registered midwives for senior management, education and leadership roles in midwifery. The course will also appeal to those interested in a pathway to higher research degrees. The Master of Advanced Clinical Midwifery offers students the opportunity to customise elements of their learning allowing them to meet individual, personal, professional and community needs, with the opportunity to explore issues surrounding current midwifery practice by undertaking a minor thesis. Course Code M6001 CRICOS Code G Suitable for Experienced midwives seeking senior management, education and leadership roles in midwifery. The compulsory core unit, Essentials of advanced health care practice and research, provides the basis for becoming a critical consumer of research and delivering high quality evidence based patient /consumer centered care informed by heightened awareness of legal, ethical, interprofessional, cultural, managerial and safety issues. Following this you will undertake the Clinical Midwifery stream which is designed to prepare experienced midwives, registered in their country of origin, for senior management, education, professional and specialist leadership roles in a range of midwifery settings. This stream is also offered to International Student Visa Holders to study on campus in Australia. First Semester (March), Second Semester (July) Off and on campus Clayton and Peninsula Applicants should hold either a Bachelor of Midwifery degree with a high level of achievement or a Graduate Diploma of Midwifery with current registration as a midwife in country of origin/residence. 5 Master of Advanced Nursing (Nurse Practitioner) This course is intended for registered nurses working in advanced practice roles intending to seek endorsement as Nurse Practitioners with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA). Course Code 4513 Suitable for This course is intended for registered nurses working in advanced practice roles Benefits Provides the relevant requirements for endorsement as Nurse Practitioners with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA) Career outcomes The Nurse Practitioner has an advanced role that includes health assessment and management and may include, but is not limited to, the direct referral of patients to other health care professionals, prescribing medications and ordering diagnostic investigations. Nurse Practitioners work autonomously in advanced and extended clinical practice roles in hospitals and community settings in collaboration with other members of the health care team. 3 years part-time First Semester (March) Clayton Completed Bachelor of Nursing or equivalent degree and successful completion of postgraduate award in a relevant specialty area (Graduate Certificate or equivalent) Current nursing registration with AHPRA Minimum of 5 years (FTE) nursing experience following initial registration, including 3 years FTE in a speciality practice area and 1 year FTE at an advanced practice level Written evidence of employer support for extended clinical practice experience within the workplace Recognition as an advanced practice nurse within a specialisedfield of practice Evidence of professional activity, including but not limited to: + membership of professional organisations + ongoing professional development activities + credentials in area of specialisation (if applicable) Course structure This course consists of coursework only What will I study? Full-time students are expected to commit to a total of hours of study per week, per semester during teaching and examination periods. For part-time students, the number of hours of study will be pro-rata per unit. Irrespective of whether the majority of time is spent in class or on independent study outside class, the number of hours students need to commit to their studies will be the same for all courses. Do I have clinical placements?
