Fall 2015 Computer Classes
CLASS DESCRIPTIONS This series of free classes will be conducted at each of the Kenosha Public Library locations. Space is limited. Please register online at http://mykpl.info/iguana/www.main.cls?surl=classes or by phone at (262) 564-6130. Computer Basics - This class is for those who are very new to computers. You will learn some terminology and have plenty of chances to ask questions. Registration is required. E-Mail for Beginners This class will work on setting up a free G-Mail (Google e-mail) account, composing new messages, and replying to your mail. Students must have basic computer and mouse skills. Registration is required. Internet Basics - This class is for people who are unfamiliar with the internet. You will learn how to get to websites and how to search for information. This class is hands-on; basic keyboarding and mouse operation skills are required. Registration is required. Backing Up Your Devices 101 Tired of losing precious photos when switching devices? Need help understanding what can be backed up to the "cloud" and how to get started? In this class, you will learn how to back up photos to the cloud and what apps are free for iphone, ipad, Android, and tablets. Registration is not required. Coding Basics for Adults The basic knowledge of how lines of code create the digital worlds we explore every day is becoming a fundamental digital literacy. Get an introduction to the basics and learn how you can build your coding skillset. Registration is required. Facebook for Beginners - Set up a profile on the popular social network and begin connecting to friends and family right away. Basic computer and mouse skills and a valid email address are required. Registration is required. Google Drive - Learn about Google Drive, the free web-based alternative to Microsoft Word that lets you create documents, presentations, spreadsheets, and forms. This is a great opportunity for parents with students at KUSD to learn about the Google Apps that their students use at school. Registration is required.
Introduction to Microsoft Excel - Learn how to construct a basic spreadsheet. Topics include: formatting, editing, use of formulas, and how to name and save a spreadsheet. This class is hands-on; familiarity with a keyboard and mouse is necessary. Registration is required. Introduction to Microsoft Power Point - Create and edit a slideshow. Basic skills and experience with word processing and formatting and use of the computer mouse is required. Registration is required. Introduction to Microsoft Word - Learn how to type, format, print, and save a document. Also learn to use the spellchecker and the cut, copy and paste commands. The class is hands-on; familiarity with a keyboard and mouse is necessary. Registration is required. Intermediate Microsoft Excel - This class is for people who already have experience using Microsoft Excel. Topics covered will include pivot tables, charts, and advanced formulas. Registration is required. Intermediate Microsoft Word - Topics covered will be tabs, columns, breaks, tables, pictures, and special characters and features. This is a fast paced, hands-on class. Prerequisites: experience using Word and a mastery of basic formatting, cutting and pasting and click and drag techniques, as well as use of the computer mouse. Registration required. Overdrive: Free E-Books, Audiobooks, Videos & More - Learn how to listen to audiobooks, read e-books, and watch movies on your computer, app-based tablet, ipad, or smartphone. This hands-on class will demonstrate finding available materials in Overdrive, setting up your account, placing reservations, and downloading and using the Overdrive app for your device. Please bring your fully charged devices with you and know any passwords necessary to download apps. Please also bring your current library card and PIN. Registration is not required. Pinterest for Beginners Come learn about Pinterest, a simple, online way to organize images, projects, ideas and favorites. Open an account, create boards and begin pinning! Learn how to find pins in particular categories or follow other pinners. Be sure to bring your Pinterest password if you have an account or bring your email address and email password if you don t. Registration is required.
Raspberry Pi The Raspberry Pi is a credit-card-sized computer that plugs into your TV and a keyboard. In this class, you'll learn what a Raspberry Pi is, what it can do, and how to use it. Registration is required. Twitter for Beginners Set up a free account on the popular social network and begin tweeting, retweeting, following, and hash-tagging right away, all in 140 letters or less! Basic computer and mouse skills and a valid email address are required. Optionally you may bring along your smartphone or tablet and download the Twitter app. Registration is required, either online or by calling 262-564-6130. Zinio: Free Digital Magazines Learn how to download and read FREE digital magazines on your desktop computer, app-based tablet, ipad, or smartphone using the library s Zinio subscription. This hands-on class will demonstrate browsing the digital magazine collection, setting up your accounts, and obtaining the Zinio app for your device. Please bring your fully charged devices with you and know any passwords necessary to download apps. Please also bring your current library card and PIN. Registration is not required.
