Year One In yur first year yu will be intrduced t civil engineering thrugh the Civil Engineering Design Prjects mdule. The mdule will draw upn cre material delivered in the fur ther Year One mdules tgether with develping knwledge and skills in cnstructin, architectural/building technlgy, CAD, health & safety, the envirnment and cmmunicatin skills. The prject essence f this mdule is strngly supprted by the Engineering Surveying mdule that incrprates a week lng residential surveying field curse where the practical surveying skills required by the cnstructin industry, alng with teamwrk and management skills, will be develped. Year One mdules Civil Engineering Design Prjects (40 credits) This mdule will intrduce yu t the rganisatin f the cnstructin industry and the key rles played by civil engineering prfessinals. Yu will develp yur knwledge f and skills in the fllwing: Cnstructin techniques Cmputer-aided design Health and safety The envirnment Sustainability The cnstructin industry Simulated wrk situatins will be used t develp yur key cmmunicatin skills. This mdule will integrate a number f civil engineering disciplines thrugh prject wrk. This will be supprted by key-fcus lectures, seminars and practical studi sessins. Sketching and CAD skills will be develped thrugh cmputer wrkshps, studi-based teaching and prject-based assignments. Assessment in 100% based prject-based cursewrk. Engineering materials (20 credits) Thrughut this mdule yu will be intrduced t the materials encuntered in civil engineering and general cnstructin. Gelgy Sil mechanics Materials: steel, cncrete, bricks and ceramics, rganics and design prblems The mdule is delivered thrugh a series f lectures supprted by seminars and labs. 50% f yur final mark will be assessed thrugh a 2-hur frmal examinatin. The remaining 50% will be assessed thrugh lab reprts and shrt class assignments. Engineering Surveying (20 credits) During this mdule yu will develp yur skills in using standard surveying instrumentatin. These skills will be used alngside the assciated field and ffice prcedures fr the preparatin f site plans, setting ut, cntrl f cnstructin wrks and the measurement f existing buildings. Lectures and tutrials will be used t develp the thery and basic numerical/data prcessing applicatins f the subject area. These will be supprted by seminars and lab sessins which will intrduce and develp the practical surveying field skills required by industry. 50% f yur final mark is assessed by a frmal 2-hur examinatin. 40% f the final mark will be assessed thrugh activities undertaken n the residential surveying field curse. The remaining 10% f yur mark will be assessed by cursewrk assignments and thrugh practical sessins. Residential field curse The mdule will culminate in a ne-week residential field trip where yu will wrk in grups t develp the skills yu have learnt thrughut the mdule. Grups will wrk under limited supervisin t plan, manage and assess their wn prgramme t meet set targets. A range f typical engineering surveying instrumentatin will be used t prduce a site plan, set ut simulated cnstructin wrks and t measure existing structures. Intrductin t Structural Engineering (20 credits) This mdule aims t prvide yu with revisin in relevant statics and a quantitative and qualitative appreciatin f the behaviur and design f beams and triangulated framewrks. Individual with Grup Prject (40 credits) This mdule aims t develp yur ability t interpret and develp prject briefs and analyse the cncepts and slutins related t the brief. It allws yu t demnstrate initiative, creativity and innvatin in the develpment f slutins t civil engineering related prblems. The individual prject is a bdy f wrk prviding yu with the pprtunity t independently research an agreed area f interest within the cnstructin industry. During the grup prject yu will develp a civil engineering related scheme in respnse t an initial design brief. As part f a grup yu will plan, participate in and reprt yur slutin, develping yur cmmunicatin skills, teamwrk and time management. The individual prject will be supprted by lectures, presentatin sessins and individual supervisin meetings. The grup prject will be intrduced thrugh lectures, seminars and ptential site visits.
