We will perform from north to south. Our first concert will be in Clear Lake on Saturday, April 25, at 7:30 pm at University Baptist Church. We will then journey north on Sunday, April 26, for a 4:00 pm concert at Trinity Lutheran Church Klein. This year will be our eighth season to perform as a part of their concert series! We always look forward to being there. It is such a beautiful place to play. Our third concert date has been set for Saturday, July 11 at 7:30. We will be at Cullen Hall on the campus of the University of St. Thomas. The university has a parking garage with a $2.00 charge on exiting the garage. You may also park for free after 7:00 in the campus lots. We will send more information about this in July prior to the concert. This concert will be our Pinnacle send off concert. We leave for Dallas a few days after our July 11th concert. In Dallas we will perform a Feature concert at Pinnacle. We hope that you will join us at one or more of these concerts. Our concert is titled JOURNEY. Many people will be traveling to various destinations as we move through to the summer months. To journey is to move from one place to another, usually over a longer period of time. Other than traveling from a physical place to another physical place, a journey might also be a spiritual one or simply a journey through our experiences of life. Join us this spring as The Houston Bronze Ensemble, Houston s premier handbell ensemble, plays music that may bring visions of a specific place, a spiritual happening or perhaps a feeling experienced as we journey on this road called life.

THE HOUSTON BRONZE ENSEMBLE To Perform a Featured Concert at Pinnacle, 2015 Saturday, July 18, 2015 7:30 pm Hilton Anatole Hotel, Dallas Texas A Feature Concert The Houston Bronze Ensemble was selected through an audition process to present a Feature concert for Pinnacle 2015, a Handbell Musicians of America event. Feature performances demonstrate the diverse performance styles and genres possible with the handbell art form. Pinnacle is an event for performers and challenges all handbell musicians to strive for their personal performance pinnacle. Bill Nave, the director of Houston Bronze, has selected a repertoire list that will certainly do that. The ensemble is working hard to raise our level of playing as we journey to Dallas in July, 2015. Ben Harris to Present Workshops at Pinnacle, 2015 Ben Harris, a ringing member of The Houston Bronze Ensemble, will be participating in Pinnacle, 2015 in an additional capacity. Besides ringing with the ensemble at our Feature Concert on Saturday night, Ben will be teaching two workshops. Both workshops will be presented twice during the course of the weekend. The first workshop, The Director as Diagnostician, is based on the premise that most if not all musicality problems in ringing handbells is based on technique problems. It is the job of the director to diagnose the problem when it occurs and then to come up with a solution. The second workshop, Score Study for Ringers, Not Just Directors discusses the fact that much can be learned about a piece by looking at the music before the very first rehearsal has begun. This is something that should be done by the ringer and director alike. Houston Bronze congratulates Ben on being chosen to present these workshops. We know they will be well received and we look forward to sitting in on them. The Seventh Octave Has Arrived!! On February 5 our 7th octave finally arrived. We are having a great time incorporating them into our spring pieces. Much of our music for spring was selected with them in mind. We are still working on the most efficient way to set them up in our space but that is a great problem to have. If you were one who made a contribution to our Heavy Metal Campaign, we want to thank you. Our campaign is on going so it isn t too late to make a contribution. See the collage of pictures on the last pages of this newsletter. You are welcome to come up after our next concert and try out that C2! Michael Glasgow Conducts Houston Bronze Workshop On February 26, Michael Glasgow joined HBE for a rehearsal. He was in Houston as the guest clinician for GHHA FebFest. In the spring we will be playing his Spirit Trilogy. This was a perfect chance for us to get to know exactly what he wants to happen with his piece. His third piece in this trilogy, Spirit Dance was hot off the press! We enjoyed seeing him work out some of the composition details as we played. He offered some wonderful suggestions on several of our other pieces, especially the ones with the mixed meters. What a privilege it was to work with him.

Sharing the art of handbell ringing. The Houston Bronze Ensemble, Inc Houston Bronze Ensemble is currently scheduling events for the 2014-15 season. If you are interested in hosting the entire ensemble or perhaps just a small ensemble for a full concert, party or wedding, please get in touch with us at: P.O. Box 53886 Houston, TX 77052 Phone: 1-866-908-RING (7464) www.houstonbronze.com Email: info@houstonbronze.com eventcoordinator@houstonbronze.com Houston Bronze Ensemble also loves conducting workshops for handbell organizations throughout the Houston area. We would love to do one for your ensemble. About The Houston Bronze Ensemble The Houston Bronze Ensemble, Houston s premier handbell ensemble, is a professional, auditioned, handbell ensemble made up of musicians from the greater Houston area. Houston Bronze was founded in the fall of 1988 by Hart Morris, formerly the Director of Music Ministries at Grace Presbyterian Church in Houston. After Hart moved to Memphis, Tennessee, the ensemble rang under the musical direction of arranger and composer Margaret (Maggi) R. Tucker until 1993. During the 1994 season, the group rang ensemble style with various ringers directing the ensemble. Conductors since then have included David VanderMeer (Fall 1996 Spring 2001), Dolan Bayless (Fall 2001 January 2006), Ben Harris (Fall 2006 July 2010), Ruth Seiwell (Fall 2010 July 2012), and James Roberts (Fall 2012-May 2014). Bill Nave was appointed the artistic director in August, 2014. In 2014 the ensemble celebrated their 25 th Anniversary year. All the past directors and many past members returned to join us for that celebration. The ensemble has been invited and will perform at Pinnacle 2015 held in Dallas, TX in July of 2015. Welcome to Sarah and Debbie! Welcome back Erin and Cindy! HBE welcomes two new members and two returning members to the ensemble this spring. Sarah has a degree in biology, works as a geographic information systems analyst and instructor, and still wants to be an astronaut when she grows up. Debbie has been ringing bells since 1982. She plays in multiple groups and directs one of the children s bell choirs at University Baptist. She teaches at Clear Lake High School. Cindy currently serves on the staff of Houston s First Baptist Church. Over the years, she has been blessed to share her music around the world, singing and ringing thus far in over thirty countries on six continents. Erin is an RN and works in the emergency room at Brazosport Regional Health System. After completing her MBA in June, she began a Nurse Practitioner program in September. HEAVY METAL CAMPAIGN Houston Bronze Ensemble is excited to announce our Heavy Metal Capital Campaign to fund the purchase of a seventh octave of Schulmerich handbells. Those of you who joined us at our 25th Anniversary Gala in May heard what the addition of 12 bells to our current six octave set can do. Thank you again Schulmerich for the loan of the seventh octave to celebrate this signicant milestone and to kick off our capital campaign. The purchase of a seventh octave will expand our melodic range, giving us a total of 85 bells in our primary set and placing us on par with the top ensembles in the U.S. We will have the equipment to ring any music published for handbells and HBE will be the only community ensemble in the State of Texas to own a seventh octave! But all that additional bronze doesn't come cheap, cashing in at nearly $35,000. So we are asking for your financial support to help us achieve this goal. Your gift to Heavy Metal can honor a loved one, show your appreciation to a deserving person or organization, or demonstrate your love and support of the art of handbell ringing! And your gift is tax-deductible as HBE is a 501 (c)3 organization. Each note represents $500 towards the purchase of the 7th octave of Schulmerich bells. Let s add more notes before the next edition of the newsletter. It s exciting to see the increase since our last newsletter. Thank you for your support.
