2 A new Music Activities Center: The encore we ve been waiting for. On a typical weekday, the E.V. Adams Band Hall buzzes with activity. The 85-piece Symphonic Winds group finishes rehearsal, while members of the Chamber Orchestra remove instruments from their cases and prepare for warm-up. Later in the week, the wind symphony will continue to refine a piece they will later take on the road, and subgroups of the nationally famous Fightin Texas Aggie Band will practice their gameday crowd-pleasers. The musicians who meet at E.V. Adams Band Hall are a family, sharpening their skills together. But like many families, this one has outgrown its home. Texas A&M University is embarking on a plan to build a new Music Activities Center, which will join the University Bands and Choral Activities programs under one roof. This new facility will allow our musical traditions to flourish into the future. Plans for this exciting new complex include soundproof practice rooms with after-hours access, a 100-yard artificial turf practice field, ample storage and locker space, and four new rehearsal halls. The new Music Activities Center is a dream come true. By enabling our fine young musicians to hone their crafts, this facility will lead to a bright and exciting future for musical activities at Texas A&M. Texas Aggies deserve state-of-the-art, and this facility will be exactly that. Lt. Col. Jay Brewer 81 Senior Associate Director Fightin Texas Aggie Band When the E.V. Adams Band Hall was originally built in 1970, it was designed to accommodate about 250 band members. Almost immediately, the space was too small. Now with more than 400 members, the entire Fightin Texas Aggie Band is too large to fit in the rehearsal room. The new Music Activities Center would, for the first time in the history of the university, allow the 1,300 students who make up Texas A&M s bands, choirs and orchestras a chance to rehearse in one centralized location. Moody Nolan, an architecture firm in Columbus, Ohio, will design the new facility, placing an emphasis on modern amenities while honoring our tradition of musical excellence. Constructing the Music Activities Center in a timely manner is imperative not only for the safety of our students but also for raising their music educations to new heights.

4 My music education has taught me to pay close attention to detail and instilled in me an understanding of the importance of practice. Moreover, it has helped me become not just a participant in music, but an active appreciator of it. You can help us meet five essential goals. We call these opportunities the five S s. Safety Built in 1970, the E.V. Adams Band Hall is noncompliant with current fire codes and the Americans with Disabilities Act. The 400-member Aggie Band outgrew the space long ago, and can no longer rehearse in its cramped and unsafe conditions. A new music center will not only address these issues but will also significantly increase space for rehearsals, meetings and storage. The building will also include important safety features like extended swipe-card access. It will be a critical tool in our mission to train tomorrow s leaders. Scholarship Symphonic Band Concert Band Jazz Ensemble I Jazz Ensemble II Chamber Orchestra Philharmonic Orchestra The new music center will give more young people the opportunity to enhance their skills and find respite through artistic expression. By housing the Choral Activities Program in the same facility as the A&M Instrumental Program, we unify musical forces, create greater collaboration and, indeed, find more ways to harmonize. The new space will honor Texas A&M s musical heritage while paving the way for Aggies to enhance their musical talents unlike ever before.

5 Sound Acoustics are a priority for the new music center. Specialized architects and engineers will design state-of-the-art, soundproof spaces to allow our musical groups to rehearse simultaneously. With four breath-taking rehearsal halls including a space designated for choral groups and many individual practice rooms, we will be able to crescendo into the future and account for the ongoing growth of our musical programs. Storage The number of instruments in our program exceeds the capacity of our current band hall fourfold. A majority of our musicians must store their instruments in the basement because other storage areas are occupied. The new climate-controlled building will offer ample storage. These improvements will allow faculty, staff and students from all ensembles to stow their instruments, sheet music libraries and other belongings in a secure space on-site. Scheduling The size and conditions of the E.V. Adams Band Hall present a significant scheduling challenge exiting the building after rehearsal is not unlike the experience of leaving Kyle Field after a big game! Today, 10 different groups use the space, leaving only minutes between rehearsal sessions. Imagine the possibilities that this new facility will offer our Aggie musicians.
