Six months into the course I decided that I loved hairdressing and applied for a job as a salon assistant with a salon called Angels Hair. I was offered the job from lots of other young applicants because of my TVET experience and when I left school I was offered an apprenticeship. I am so glad I chose to do the TVET Course. It was fun and gave me a head start in my career. TVET TAFE While at School What is TVET? If you re a secondary school student in Years 11 or 12, you can choose to study a TAFE Vocational Education and Training (TVET) course while you re still at school. TVET gives you the opportunity to complete your HSC while you gain practical work skills and a TAFE NSW qualification. It s a great way to build your career and your employability skills. The skills you gain during your TVET course are invaluable and will give you a fantastic head start in life. TVET courses are a great choice as they allow you to gain dual accreditation from the NSW Board of Studies and TAFE NSW at the same time. Your TVET course can also contribute to your Australian Tertiary Admission Rank () if it is classified as an Industry Curriculum Framework (ICF) course. How will a TVET course benefit me? This means your TVET course is incredibly powerful if you would like to enter the labour market, particularly if your course includes a work placement component. If you meet the TAFE requirements you will receive either a Certificate or a Statement of Competencies achieved from TAFE NSW. Types of TVET Courses All TVET courses count towards HSC unit credit and are classified by the NSW Board of Studies as either Industry Curriculum Framework (ICF) courses or Board Endorsed Courses (BEC). Industry Curriculum Framework courses can be examinable and count towards the calculation of your Australian Tertiary Admission Rank (). Board Endorsed courses are endorsed by the Board of Studies but are not examinable and do not contribute to the. Please note: Correct at time of printing. Extension Courses You may be able to undertake additional units of study in some courses to gain an additional qualification including the completion of a full Certificate or an additional Statement of Attainment. Students must be enrolled in or have completed the 240 hours Industry Curriculum Framework before enrolling in an extension course. Work Placement Some courses require you to complete work placement. This is a NSW Board of Studies requirement and work placement must be completed to ensure the course is counted towards either your preliminary or HSC year of study. Work placement requirements for all courses are shown in this guide. Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) / Current Competencies If you have already completed all or part of a similar vocational course elsewhere, such as at School/TAFE, your previous studies and results will be recognised. You will not have to repeat that training and assessment. Additionally if through previous work or life experiences you have already developed high level skills in this course area, these may also be recognised. Your teacher or TVET Coordinator can provide more details of the recognition process. Attendance at TAFE TVET courses are generally offered at a TAFE Campus for 4 hours, one afternoon per week over one or two years. There is no TAFE fee for NSW government school students, as NSW government schools have a state-wide arrangement to pay the TVET costs directly to TAFE and do not pass these costs onto their students. Non-government schools also pay TVET costs directly to TAFE, but some schools may require their TVET students to pay additional fees to the school to contribute to the cost of TAFE-delivered courses. School Based Apprenticeships/Traineeships A School Based Apprenticeship (SBA) or Traineeship (SBT) combines paid work with TAFE training and school. The SBA option is equivalent to the first year of a full-time apprenticeship, whilst an SBT will provide a certificate of proficiency in the traineeship area a great start for your post-school career options! Both of these options allow students to obtain valuable work skills and experience whilst undertaking paid parttime work as part of their HSC study. Get a Head Start to a Degree There are lots of ways to reach your goal of higher education apart from the traditional HSC and route. You can work your way to a degree in manageable stages with TAFE. You can start with a TVET course while you are at school as your first step After school you can enrol in TAFE to complete either a certificate or diploma course and then apply for a degree course.
