Whilst exploring her options and undertaking some work experience at a local veterinary hospital, April hit the jackpot by being offered a Schoolbased Traineeship after proving herself as a worthy employee. In 2015 April commenced her studies at TAFE and soon proved herself to be a standout student which resulted in her being awarded School-based Apprentice/Trainee of the Year in the 2015 SWSi Student Achievement Awards. 31 Student profile Mitchell Baird In June 2012 Mitchell Baird was a typical Year 10 school student, trying to work his way through the maze of options available for the HSC years. At the time he was considering his post-school pathway to assist with making the right subject choices, with Construction Carpentry eventually being his chosen career pathway, Mitchell looked into the option of a School-based Apprenticeship and decided that this was the right pathway for him and it has lead him on a journey which he could never have imagined. Whilst in Year 11, Mitchell was selected to participate in a Regional WorldSkills. Thanks to the outstanding skills he demonstrated during the course and experience gained in the workplace, Mitchell was announced as the South Western Sydney winner and NSW participant at the National competition to be held in Perth in November Mitchell s workmanship skills saw him take out 2nd place and the Silver Medal at the National competition. Undertaking the School-based Apprenticeship and all the opportunities that followed was definitely the right pathway for me and I would highly recommend it as an awesome option for any other student looking at a career in a trade related area. In 2015 Mitchell is continuing his apprenticeship and is grateful that the TVET/SBAT option was available for him to get a head-start whilst still at school. 29
