5 Carpentry Certificate in Construction Trade Training Level 2 Length: 34 weeks (Full-time) Start your career with the WelTec Certificate in Construction Trade Training. This is your first step towards gaining knowledge and skills in basic construction maintenance and construction projects. The qualification is aimed primarily at people interested in entering a career in the construction industry. It will also be useful for people wishing to gain introductory skills towards a career in carpentry, landscape construction, painting, glazing, electrical work, plumbing or roofing. They will gain an understanding of health and safety issues in the building industry including skills and knowledge in safety, hand and power tools, building calculations, building materials, computer skills and employment skills to begin work on a construction site. This programme will provide you with a mix of knowledge and practical skills to get a start in the construction industry or progress to further tertiary education and training. You will learn in purpose-built workshops and on various practical projects. 6 Certificate in Foundation Studies (Plasterboard Preparation and Finishing) Level 3 Length: 34 weeks (Full-time) The Certificate in Foundation Studies (Level 3) programme, specialising in Plasterboard Preparation and Finishing will give you all the key skills needed to begin work as an assistant to a plasterboard fixer or finisher within the construction industry. With experience and further study, you can progress to a qualified tradesperson in a team or become selfemployed. Other building industry jobs such as painting and decorating, or carpentry are also an option. This certificate provides students with knowledge of how to interpret drawings and specifications for building work. Students will learn safe worksite practice in plasterboard preparation, through to finishing off a plaster board installation in a practical tertiary education setting. > Apply measurement and calculation to the fixing and finishing of plasterboard systems in accordance with working drawings and specifications > Gain hands on worksite skills including the safe use of hand and power tools > Erect scaffolding for plasterboard systems and apply site safety procedures in construction work > Install plasterboard systems to manufacturers specification National Certificate in Plasterboard (Level 4) which may be completed through an industry apprenticeship Certificate in Carpentry Level 3 Length: 34 weeks (Full-time) WelTec s Certificate in Carpentry is your first step towards gaining a building qualification. You will learn in purpose-built workshops and on WelTec s own building site, where you will work on full-sized building projects. On the building site, you ll learn about framing, roofing, cladding, internal linings, fitting windows and hanging doors. You will also gain an understanding of the health and safety issues in the building industry, and develop your knowledge of building codes and regulations. 7 National Certificate in Carpentry Level 4 Length: Based on individual learning plan Campus: On-Job and Petone Do you want to take your building career even further? The carpentry programme is an NZQA-accredited programme that will allow you to fulfil the requirements for the National Certificate in Carpentry (Level 4). Our flexible learning options include practical tutorials, workshop instruction and regular on-site assessment by WelTec carpentry tutors. You will be guided through the theory requirements with part-time study offered in the evenings, and put the theory into practice on the building site, supported by our teaching staff. > Apply safe work practices on construction sites > Increase your knowledge of timber and hardware > Apply levelling methods and set out residential buildings > Safely use carpentry hand tools, power tools and woodworking machinery > Interpret construction drawings and prepare quantity lists > Receive on-site work experience in timber floor framing, flooring and wall framing > Install plasterboard linings and thermal insulation materials National Certificate in Construction Trades (Supervisor) (Level 4) Career opportunities include work as a carpenter, self-employed builder, industry representative or industry instructor. 9 Painting and Decorating Certificate in Foundation Studies (Painting) Level 3 Level 3 Certificate in Applied Decorating Skills Length: 17 weeks (Full-time) Campus: Whitireia (Porirua) Length: 17 weeks (Full-time) The Certificate in Foundation Studies (Level 3) programme, specialising in Painting, will give you all the key skills needed to begin work as an assistant to a painter within the construction industry. With experience and further study you can progress to a qualified tradesperson in a team or become self-employed. Other building industry jobs, such as plastering or tiling, are also an option. This certificate provides students with knowledge of how to interpret drawings and specifications for building work. Students will learn safe worksite practice in preparation, through to finishing off a paint system in a practical tertiary education setting. > Apply measurement and calculation, order and specify paint systems in accordance with working drawings and specifications > Gain hands-on worksite skills including the safe use of painting and decorating materials > Erect scaffolding for painting and apply site safety procedures in construction work > Prepare surfaces and apply paint by brush and roller to manufacturers specifications National Certificate in Painting and Decorating (Level 4) This programme is designed to develop practical skills, appropriate knowledge and safe working attitudes to perform basic skills in the decorating industry under supervision. 10 Brick and Blocklaying, Tiling, Paving and Landscape Construction Certificate in Tiling Level 2 Start: Check online Length: 17 weeks (Full-time) Certificate in Brick and Blocklaying Level 3 Length: 17 weeks (Full-time) Begin your career with a certificate in Tiling (Level 2). This programme provides a solid introduction into Tiling and will equip you with real skills to allow you to step into the industry and apply your knowledge. Learn about tiling techniques and design and put the theory into practice in our purpose-built workshops. > Install floor and wall tiling > Workplace health and safety > Material Quantities > Adhesives, grouts and sealants Certificate in Brick and Blocklaying (Level 3) Employment opportunities include apprenticeship or employment within the tiling industry, leading to fully qualified trades person or beyond to self-employed contractor. Specifically designed for those wanting to learn skills in bricklaying and blocklaying, this programme incorporates the first half of the full-year Certificate in Brick and Blocklaying, Tiling and Paving (Level 3). 11 Certificate in Brick, Block Laying, Paving and Tiling Level 3 Length: 34 weeks (Full-time) Designed for those wanting to learn skills and enter careers in the bricklaying, blocklaying, tiling or paving industries. In our purpose-built workshops, you will learn how to interpret plans, consult with clients and work on a range of practical projects. > Learn the techniques and skills of blocklaying, bricklaying and tiling > Use and maintain hand-tools > Install drainage systems > Learn workplace health and safety and first aid > Develop skills in hard surface construction (concrete, paving, slate and tiling) Certificate in Landscape Construction (Level 4) Career opportunities include employment within the bricklaying, blocklaying, paving and tiling industries. Certificate in Landscape Construction Level 4 Length: 17 weeks (Full-time) The Certificate in Landscape Construction will provide students with the knowledge and skills to enter into the landscape construction industry. 12 Plumbing, Drainlaying, Gasfitting and Roofing Certificate in Plumbing, Drainlaying, Gasfitting and Roofing Level 3 Length: 34 weeks (Full-time) On completion you may seek employment in industry to complete further study towards the National Certificate in Plumbing and Gasfitting through an industry apprenticeship. You may find employment in the plumbing, drainlaying, gasfitting and roofing industry, work as an apprentice or go on to further training. The skills in this field are also in high demand in other sectors. Start your plumbing career with the Certificate in Plumbing, Drainlaying, Gasfitting and Roofing (Level 3). Gain the knowledge and practical skills necessary to enter an apprenticeship in the plumbing, drainlaying, gasfitting and roofing industries. Our tutors will help get you industry-ready providing work experience opportunities with local plumbers, drainlayers, gasfitters or roofers in the Wellington region. Course commences on Monday and finishes with the EWRB examination on the Friday. Certificate of Achievement in Solar Hot Water Installations The Certificate in Solar Water Heating Installation is a three-day practical short course supported by a distance learning module. It provides additional skills for Registered and Craftsman Plumbers to be recognised as qualified installers of solar water heating systems. Learn to install different types of solar hot water heating systems and work within the plumbing standards and codes of compliance. 15 Electrical Trades Certificate in Electrical Engineering Level 3 Length: 34 weeks (Full-time) Start your Electrical Trades career with WelTec s Certificate in Electrical Engineering. This will be your first step towards gaining an electrical qualification and entering the electrical industry. You will learn the handson practical skills and theory that an electrician needs in their daily work. This programme will provide you with broad based training in all aspects of the industry and includes a large practical component with at least eight hours of work experience per week. Work experience can help you find paid work as an electrical apprentice or in retail sales work. This certificate incorporates the National Certificate in Electrical Engineering (Level 2). > Learn about safe working practices > Gain an understanding of electrical theory > Carry out practical wiring and learn use of test instruments > Gain skills in correct workshop practice > Participate in wiring up a house > Learn how to diagnose and fix faults > Develop skills in freehand drawing > Gain knowledge of basic metalwork > Learn manual soldering and de-soldering procedures > Learn gas and MIG welding > Produce your own CV National Certificate in Electrical Engineering Theory (Level 4). Certificate in Electrical Engineering Theory Level 4 Start: February 2015 Length: 34 weeks (Part-time); 5.30pm-7.30pm A three-stage programme for those seeking to become an apprentice electrician, the Certificate in Electrical Engineering Theory (Level 4), will provide skills in a range of electrical equipment. The Certificate in Electrical Engineering Theory (Level 4) is offered as a series of evening classes and block courses over three years. It includes four hours study per week (taught over two evenings) and a one or two week block course. > Learn about electricity and magnetism > Learn how to understand and use electrical diagrams > Learn to apply mathematics and mechanics > Gain knowledge of electrical instruments and measurements > Learn about installing flexible cords and cables > Learn how to solder wires and components > Learn about safe working practices, testing, first aid and CPR > Get up to date with employment rights and responsibilities > Learn about the application of relevant legislation, codes of practice and standards > Gain knowledge of electrical theory, concepts and trade practice > Become competent using the practical skills of an electrician National Certificate in Electrical Engineering (Level 5).
