3 What Engineering, Manufacturing & Industrial Technology Careers can students prepare for at Mott Community College? MCC can help you complete or begin almost any Engineering, Manufacturing or Industrial Technology related career. Jobs in this field will require different levels of education depending on the specific responsibilities. Some jobs may only require several months of training while others may require one to two years of college education or a Bachelor Degree (four years) or more of education. MCC is a college uniquely designed to help students achieve or start any level of education and job training in Engineering, Manufacturing and Industrial Technology. MCC Occupational Programs & Careers job skills in two years, one year or less The MCC occupational Associate Degree programs, certificates and alternative training options are designed to prepare students for immediate employment in specialized areas of health, business, technology, human services, and industry. Associate of Applied Science (AAS) Degree Designed to prepare students for immediate employment in specialized areas in health, business, technology, human services, and industry. Although this degree prepares students to enter the world of work, many AAS graduates do transfer to four-year institutions to continue their education while working. Certificate Programs of study requiring approximately one year of full-time course work, designed for entry-level employment. Starting your Bachelor Degree at MCC start here, finish there If the Engineering, Manufacturing and Industrial Technology occupation you are interested in requires four or more years of college, you can start at MCC and finish at the four-year college of your choice. MCC counselors and advisors assist students in developing their plans for transferring to four year colleges and universities. Students may take up to two years towards a four-year degree at Mott Community College and then transfer to a four-year college or university. Alternative Training A course or clusters of courses that provide special occupational skills/credentials or satisfy the qualifications needed for Industry Certification standards. Many of these training options are 15 weeks or less. The programs listed on the next several pages are the Engineering, Manufacturing and Industrial Technology related occupational degrees, certificates and training options that are available at MCC. Production Operations Management

4 Architecture & Construction Careers relate to designing, planning, managing, building and maintaining the built environment. Architectural Computer Aided Drafting & Design Certificate This program prepares the learner for entry-level detailing architectural positions in industry by teaching architectural detailing fundamentals and computer aided design (CAD) skills related to industrial workplaces. Focus is on the detailing process and the development of complete and accurate 2D architectural drawings. All courses utilize CAD as the mode of developing solutions to current and relevant industrial detailing applications. Emphasis is on view construction and light residential detailing as they are applied to the field of architectural and construction technologies. Consumers Energy Specialist Certificate This program is designed for current Consumers Energy Company employees. It is designed to provide students with a set of broad based skills that will prepare them to work as Consumers Energy Specialists. Interested students who are not current employees of Consumers Energy Company should contact the Technology division office to determine current demand for interns. Building & Construction Technology Certificate & Associate in Applied Science Technology The Associate Degree program prepares graduates for entry-level positions in various segments of the construction industry, including commercial or residential construction. Skill development includes building layout, preparation of material quotations, material ordering, estimating and tracking costs, and management of construction projects. Building and construction technicians find employment with builders, architectural firms, contractors, municipalities and suppliers of construction materials. Related fields include equipment sales and rental, building inspection and insurance adjusting. The certificate program provides the basic skills for students who wish to enter the Building and Construction Industry with a significant level of academic achievement in this occupational area. All courses required for the certificate will apply to the Building & Construction Technology Associate Degree. Upon completion of this program of study, students will have developed entry-level skills that will prepare them for positions in the building and construction industry. Building & Construction Technology

5 Manufacturing Careers relate to designing, planning and performing the processing of materials into intermediate or final products and related professional and technical support activities such as production planning and control, maintenance and manufacturing/process engineering. Computer Aided Drafting & Design This program prepares the learner for entry-level detailing engineering positions in industry by teaching detailing fundamentals and computer aided design (CAD) skills related to industrial workplaces. Focus is on the detailing process and the development of complete and accurate 2D drawings. All courses utilize CAD as the mode of developing solutions to current and relevant industrial detailing applications. Emphasis is on view construction and detailing of mechanical parts as they are applied to the fields of automotive, defense, agriculture, furniture, appliances, heavy equipment, etc. Graduates will possess skills that will allow them to operate in a dynamic environment as part of the design team. Manufacturing Simulation Technology This program prepares the learner for computer based simulation technician positions in industry by providing core skills in math, science, communications, computer aided design (CAD), quality, manufacturing processes and materials. The program also addresses manufacturing design and robotics in order to support the integration of these systems in 3-D computer simulations of robotic manufacturing work cell design. This emerging technology is based on real-time data and allows manufacturers to simulate several scenarios without the time loss and cost of physical prototypes and/or expensive tooling. The Department of Defense, major automotive manufacturers, aircraft manufacturing, aerospace, maritime/ship building, entertainment industry and industrial equipment manufacturers are using computer simulation applications to reduce time to market and increase product quality. Development of this program has been funded by the National Science Foundation (NSF) to address the critical shortage of manufacturing simulation technicians. 6 Mechanical Operations Technology This program is designed for individuals who want a career with hands-on technology related to the field of engineering. Mechanical Operations Technology (MOT) is concerned primarily with the practical application of support to industrial activities. This broad field includes work in design, manufacturing, maintenance and testing. Operations & Production Technology Certificate This program is designed to provide entry-level employees an opportunity to gain some basic skills needed in the workplace while investigating possible career and academic paths for more advanced classes. The OPT program provides a F.L.E.X. Flexible Learning Experience and allows the learner to complete core skills identified by regional businesses before declaring a more specific specialty in a technology area. Students may choose from a variety of pathways including, but not limited to: Drafting and Design, Quality, Electrical/Electronics, Information Technology, Air Conditioning, Heating and Refrigeration Technology, Manufacturing or Production Operations. Production Operations Management Certificate & This program is designed to serve potential or newly appointed industrial supervisors, as well as experienced supervisors who wish to maintain and improve supervisory and management abilities. Vehicle Design (Mott/Macomb) This joint program provides instruction for students who wish to enter the automotive design field in the area of body structures, instrument panels, exterior/interior trim, hardware, etc. It addresses specific content areas related to the automotive design process, surface development and body detailing, and CAD (computer-aided-design). This degree is offered jointly by MCC and Macomb Community College and may require students to travel to Macomb for certain courses. Graduates may find employment at companies that design and engineer automotive and consumer goods. Opportunities for career advancement and economic growth are strong for students who develop job specific skills in employer product lines and who remain current with the rapidly changing technology used in the field. Special Kettering/MCC Partnership Kettering University and Mott Community College agree to an academic articulation that includes the areas of computer, electrical, industrial and mechanical engineering; computer science; business management; environmental chemistry; applied mathematics; and applied physics. This articulation provides students with guidance, including a formal guide sheet for their intended program, which enables them to initiate their college studies at Mott Community College and complete their Bachelor of Science Degree from Kettering University. This articulation is intended to ensure the smoothest possible transition of the student and the transfer of credits required for the desired baccalaureate degree program at Kettering University. Students can be guaranteed admission to Kettering University. Students who complete all of the approved courses in the guide sheet for their Kettering University major will be able to start their studies at Kettering at or near the junior level.

7 Science, Technology, Engineering & Mathematics Careers relate to planning, managing and providing scientific research and professional and technical services (e.g., physical science, social science, engineering) including laboratory and testing services, and research and development services. Air Conditioning/Heating & Refrigeration Technology Certificate & This Associate Degree program is designed to provide the knowledge and skills necessary for career opportunities in this expanding industry. ACHR technicians are responsible for the design, installation, service and sales of refrigeration and climate control equipment and systems. The ACHR curriculum combines classroom theory and physical principles with laboratory experience using real-world equipment, in installation, service, testing and troubleshooting skills. In addition, students are kept abreast of industry trends such as automatic system controls, high efficiency equipment, environmentally safe refrigerants and the use of computers. The certificate is designed to provide entry-level knowledge and skills for employment in the heating, cooling and refrigeration industry. Employment forecasts indicate an expansion of career opportunities in the future. Upon completion of this program, the student will be able to demonstrate a level of competency in sizing and selecting air conditioning and heating equipment, calculating building heating loads, performing the basic mechanical tasks necessary to install and test air conditioning, heating and refrigeration equipment. electronic communications, electronic system development, embedded controls, medical equipment, avionics, aerospace, navigational equipment and technical sales careers. Many careers are available in design, product development, maintenance, installation, testing and troubleshooting. Fire Protection Technology This program is designed to provide education for two types of students: those who are presently members of a municipal or industrial fire department and wish to improve their supervisory or administrative skills, as well as those students aspiring to become members of a municipal fire department and hope to enhance their employment opportunities by acquiring a degree in this profession. Quality Assurance Certificate & The Quality Assurance program is designed to give students the technical and practical knowledge to enter the field of manufacturing or service as a quality professional. The student will learn the latest quality concepts and techniques used in modern facilities. Students will gain knowledge in process control, team problem solving, statistical methods, measurements, cost of quality, management concepts and employee involvement. Electrical/Electronic Technology This program is designed to prepare the student for careers in a wide range of opportunities such as: control systems, industrial automation, robotics, Electrical/Electronic Technology

8 condition and learn techniques required to refinish vehicles. Graduates of this program will demonstrate proficiency in autobody repair and painting. Transportation, Distribution & Logistics Careers relate to planning, management, and movement of people, materials and goods by road, pipeline, air, rail and water and related professional and technical support services such as transportation infrastructure planning and management, logistics services, mobile equipment and facility maintenance. Automotive Technology Certificate & The Associate Degree Automotive Technology program provides comprehensive advanced study in automobile maintenance and repair. The program emphasizes skills to help the person function successfully in the field, including exposure to the skills needed for new technology as it evolves. Students learn every aspect of the automobile including computer control systems, brake and suspension work. A key component emphasized is the ability to be self-directed and develop life-long learning skills. Graduates will find employment opportunities in car dealerships, independent garages, fleet operations and other related areas. Note: students must provide their own hand tools. The certificate program provides students with technical and related skills that will enable them to perform in a variety of positions within the Automotive Service industry. Technicians, service and parts managers, technical writers, service and sales representatives are a few examples of career opportunities in this field. Autobody Repair & Painting This program is designed to give students the knowledge and skills required to weld autobody materials using oxy-acetylene torches, learn roughing, bumping and metal finishing and basic and advanced refinishing procedures. Students will learn to estimate collision damage, correct damage to restore vehicles to their original Job Experience Based Degree Options The options listed below allow you to use your work experience and job certification toward a degree at Mott Community College. Apprentice Preparation Alternative Training Placement in apprenticeship programs is at the discretion of employers and organizations representing the skilled trades involved and cannot be guaranteed by MCC. Completing courses at MCC can improve the chances of getting an apprenticeship. Students should consult with an advisor to develop a plan that best fits their particular background and interests. Applied Technology This program is designed for students who have progressed in their careers and achieved an advanced classification/status in a recognized technical field. Examples of these positions could include senior designer, head mechanic, quality manager, construction manager, etc. This advanced classification must be accompanied by a minimum of five years of full-time work experience. Students will be required to provide proof of advanced status and will select a program specialty in their fields of expertise. Students will be granted up to 20 credits for successfully fulfilling the criteria stated above. Industrial Technology This program is designed for students who have completed a recognized apprenticeship program. Depending upon the trade, students will elect a program option of electrician, machinist, or construction and maintenance. Students will be granted 20 credits toward the Associate of Applied Science Degree for successful completion of the apprenticeship.

Call (810) What Classes Should I Take In High School For Engineering, Manufacturing & Industrial Technology Careers? Take advantage of your high school curriculum to prepare you for future success! The following academic courses are recommended for students interested in pursuing careers in engineering, manufacturing and industrial technology: GRADE ENGLISH/ LANGUAGE ARTS MATH SCIENCE SOCIAL STUDIES/ SCIENCES TECHNICAL COURSES 9 English/ Language Arts I Algebra I or Geometry Biology Earth, Life or Physical Science State History/ Civics Introduction to occupational career selected 10 English/ Language Arts II Geometry or Algebra II Biology or Chemistry U.S. History Continue courses based on career path 11 English/ Language Arts III Algebra II, Pre-Calculus, Trigonometry or Statistics Chemistry or Physics World History/World Geography/ Sociology Continue courses based on career path 12 English/ Language Arts IV Calculus or *Dependent on chosen career AP Science, Physics or *Dependent on chosen career Psychology/ Economics *Dependent on chosen career Continue courses based on career path All plans of study should meet local and state high school graduation requirements and college entrance requirements. Certain local student organization activities are also important including public speaking, record keeping and work-based experiences. *Talk to your high school counselor for specific recommendations regarding your chosen career cluster.

10 Can High School Students Earn College Credit? YES! There are a number of ways for students to earn college credit while in high school. Talk with your high school counselor for additional information. Advanced Placement Program The Advanced Placement Program, commonly known as Advanced Placement, or AP, offers high school students the opportunity to receive university/college credit for their AP classes taken in high school. Credit is based on successful completion of the AP exam. Articulation Articulation is a process that allows students to apply credit for high school and career center courses to a certificate or Associate Degree at Mott Community College. Mott Community College has Articulation agreements with various high schools. Refer to our website at or contact your MCC or high school counselor or advisor for more information. Dual Enrollment Dual enrollment allows public high school students that meet proper requirements to enroll in college courses. Their high school district will pay a designated amount for these college classes. Early Admit Early Admit allows public high school students that do not meet the dual enrollment requirements, private school and home school students, to enroll in college courses at Mott Community College with parental and school permission.
