Dear Parent/Guardian and Student: The Board of Education will offer another great year of summer enrichment. Parents or guardians, wishing to satisfy their child s curiosity and promote collaborative skills, will be able to register their children in an enrichment class at various grade levels. Descriptions of these classes appear on the following pages. WHO: Students entering grades K 6 WHEN: July 6 24, 2015 Monday Friday WHERE: Hatton Elementary School TUITION: $150 per student/session (A or B) -OR- $250 both sessions TIMES: Session A: 9:00 10:30 a.m. Session B: 10:30 a.m. 12:00 p.m. 15 minute break built in during the session with teacher present DISCOUNT: $50 discount for each additional child enrolled OPEN HOUSE: 10:30 12:00 p.m. Friday, July 24 Student work will be on display for parents * First class July 6, 2015! On this day only, students and parents/guardians will assemble in the school cafeteria prior to the start of each session. At this time, students will be assigned to teachers and classrooms. A Summer to Discover Innovation Creation* Entering grades K 2 Instructor: Ms. Bacchus (Strong) Is you child a natural problem solver or always looking for ways to fix things? Do they spend hours building and being creative? This course will allow them to tap into these talents. By using STEM (science, technology, engineering & math) students will be asked to build and create possible solutions for some of their favorite story characters. The course would begin with a short read aloud where students discuss the character s problem and then brainstorm to solve these problems. Students will then sketch their ideas in a journal and create and test their designed contraptions and devices. Students will use grade appropriate measurements and make their contraptions using recycled materials and craft items. (Session A or B) Prerequisites: Creative imagination Enrollment: 6 8 students. The Magic of Fairy Tales Entering grades 1 & 2 Instructor: Ms. Bianchini (Kelley) Fairy tales hold a charm, mystery and wonder that spans all age groups. In this thematic study, your child will be reading and discussing fairy tales. There will be a variety of high interest writing, art, drama, math, science and social studies activities about fairy tales. Let your child learn about the magic of fairy tales. (Both Sessions) Prerequisites: Independent reading level D Enrollment: 6 9 Students Animals and Their Habitats: A Study of Nonfiction and the Arts* Entering grades 1 3 Instructor: Ms. Smith (Strong) Animals are all around us! In this course, students will explore three different units on animals. These units will include insects, ocean life, and farm animals. Students will engage in high interest activities around reading, writing, math, fine motor, and gross motor skills. The day will be structured around centers and will provide students with MANY hands on activities that get them thinking about how different animals survive in different environments. Students will enjoy learning about these animals through songs, games, and even live animal visits! (Session A or B) Complements From Seed to Plant Prerequisite: Creative imagination and a love for wildlife. From Seed to Plant* Entering grades 1 3 Instructor: Ms. Petro (Strong) Explore how seeds sprout to plant and flowers through hands on activities. We will learn about the life cycle of plants through books, technology, and outdoor adventures. Students will be so excited to share their mini gardens with their families. Our day will be filled with engaging activities around math, reading, writing and science. They will become experts in gardening while digging into the nonfiction topic of botany. Hola to Spanish! & Scrapbooking Sensation! Entering grades 1 3 Instructor: Miss DiCenzo (Thalberg) Hola to Spanish: An introduction to basic Spanish! Let s have fun learning numbers, letters, colors, and everyday objects. We will explore different Spanish speaking cultures through the use of children s books, music, and videos. We will sing songs, read poems, and talk with each other. Students will also create hands-on projects to show what they have learned! Our goal will be to be able to say a few sentences in Spanish about themselves by the end of the three weeks! (Session A only) Scrapbooking Sensation: Have fun with scrapbooking with Miss DiCenzo. Bring your own empty scrapbook and come ready to fill it with fabulous memories!! Students will be asked to bring in some of their own pictures and other embellishments in order to make their own creative scrapbook. Students will have a wonderful time sharing their own designs and creativity with the class when we showcase their end products on the last day! (Session B only) Prerequisites: Open enrollment Cooking Across Content Areas* Entering grades 3 5 Instructor: Miss Finke (Derynoski) In this course, students will have numerous opportunities to make interdisciplinary connections, while baking up delicious treats! Students will be reading and writing recipes, using measurement to create different types of snacks and desserts, discussing the role food plays in people s lives all around the world, writing sensory poetry that connects to the food we bake, and so much more. Join me for a wonderful cooking experience! (Session A or B) Prerequisites: No kitchen experience necessary Enrollment: 7 10 Students Craftmania! Entering grades 1 3 Instructor: Mrs. Lombardi (Derynoski) There is nothing like good old-fashioned arts and crafts! Students will take a project home each day as they craft their way through the summer. Save your paper towel cores, plastic soda bottles, Styrofoam cups and many other recyclable containers because we're on our way to making sea creatures and fireflies and letting our creativity get the best of us! Scientific Wonders Entering grades 3 5 Instructor: Mrs. Serafino (Derynoski) Does your child love to explore, investigate, and get messy? Are they curious learners who love to ask the questions: Why? How come? What if? This program lets students learn by doing as they participate in a variety of handson experiences that allows them to understand and explore the world we live in. Students will whet their appetite for discovery by making slime and ice cream to investigate the changing states of matter. Then students will have the opportunity to learn how our Earth is impacted by water and natural disasters like earthquakes, volcanoes, and landslides so they can design and build structures to protect our Earth. Lastly, students will find innovative ways to help the Earth and make a difference right now! Come help change our world this summer. Board Game Designer* Entering grades 3 & 4 Instructor: Miss Valentine (Thalberg) Is your child an expert in a topic or would he or she like to be? They will be able to research anything of interest and use that information to design a board game. Create question cards, game spaces, pawns, and all the elements of a board game. Students may work independently or in pairs or small groups based on interest level. (Session A or B) Prerequisites: Basic computer skills Potential BYOD Enrollment: 6-10 students Exploring the Arts Entering grades 4 6 Instructor: Mrs. Florio (Thalberg) Young artists stimulate their imagination through creating fun educational projects, varying daily. Strengthen skills in drawing, painting, sculpture, mixed media and arts and crafts. Discover the fundamental art concepts, like composition, color, line, form, and space. Develop knowledge of a variety of artistic techniques. Experience the arts while having fun. (Both sessions) Prerequisite: Creative spirit! Website Design Entering grades 4 6 Instructor: Mr. Ghidini (Kennedy) Students will learn how to create and manage a website about a topic/concept of their choice. Google sites will be used so all websites will be secure and only people who are invite will have the ability to view. Students will research their topic and present their new knowledge in a website. (Both Sessions) Prerequisite: Basic computer skills. Sports and Math Entering grades 4 6 Instructor: Mr. Amnott (Derynoski) Does your child enjoy sports such as baseball, football and basketball? Do they understand all the crazy statistics such as SLG Slugging Percentage, ERA Earned Run Average, QBR Quarterback Rating, FG% - Field Goal Percentage, etc.)? We ll take a closer look at some of these numbers, what they mean and how they are calculated. Students will select their own fantasy team, track player progress, and using their math skills, calculate these statistics and create a computer-based presentation for their team. (Both sessions) Prerequisites: Basic understanding of multiplication, division and decimals as well as basic computer skills. Lego Bricks in Space Entering Grades 4 6 Instructor: Miss Curtin (Thalberg) Ever wonder what happens to LEGOs in space? A group of astronauts brought boxes of LEGOs to the International Space Station to find out. Through Lego Bricks in Space, students will use hands-on activities to promote and inspire (STEM) science, technology, engineering and math skills. The students will conduct missions alongside the International Space Station crewmembers via video. Students will conduct these experiments using LEGOs to test the effects of space environment on simple machines. Each mission will have the students compare their results obtained on Earth to the results of the ISS crewmembers who will be conducting the same experiments with LEGOs, but in space. Computer Science Game Design & Computer Science Music and Sound Entering grades 4 6 Instructor: Ms. Slotnick (DePaolo) Computer Science Game Design: Does your child love computers? Do they wonder how programmers develop games? Students will learn basic video game coding concepts by making different types of games. This program will enhance their problem solving skills, critical thinking, and ability to work collaboratively. Using Scratch, a free program designed at MIT, students can create a variety of games types including racing, mazes, and launching games. (Session A only) Prerequisite: Basic computer keyboarding skills Scrapbooking Entering Grades 4 6+ Instructor: Miss Levin (Kennedy) Did you ever want to capture your favorite past times and create a memorable scrapbook? Scrapbooking is a great way to incorporate family pictures and favorite phrases or quotes from those memories. Scrapbooks are great gifts as well as keepsakes. (Both Sessions) Prerequisites: Open Enrollment Enrollment: 7 10 Students Computer Science Music and Sound: Is your child curious about computer coding? Do they wonder how programmers develop music videos or how DJ s create music mixes? Students will learn to play musical notes, create music videos, and build interactive music displays. This program will enhance their problem solving skills, critical thinking, and ability to work collaboratively. Using Scratch, a free program designed at MIT, students can create a variety of artistic musical projects and learn basic computer coding skills.
