1 Courses Effective Curriculums Don t Just Happen CDEC 1008 Is your curriculum still effective? With so many changes in early childhood expectations, brain research and No Child Left Behind in effect, it may be missing some components. Get help pulling together all the components to make sure everything you need is there for an effective curriculum. Students will explore developmentally appropriate programs and learning activities, become familiar with current brain research impact on early childhood development, be able to identify components of an effective program and create guidelines to design or revise a curriculum program. 2 Child Development 101 CDEC 1051 This class will highlight developmental milestones for children 1 to 5 years old. Students will engage in hand-on activities that can be done with children to facilitate development. Successful participants will become familiar with basic childcare routines, be able to identify developmental stages, recognize developmentally appropriate practices and identify factors of a safe, healthy learning environment. Date: 2/6/2010 Day: Saturday Time: 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Understanding the Cultural Impact in Child Care CDEC 1032 It is important to understand the way culture impacts what is typical for infants and toddlers. Students focus on the ability to form healthy working relationships with the families of infants and toddlers across a range of cultures. Included is an investigation into the meaning of various child-rearing behaviors and how they relate to parental expectations and cultural traditions to develop culturally appropriate practices. This workshop will give participants specific techniques for helping children and adults to relax, relate and release those factors that cause stress. This course will identify ways in which you can implement environmental awareness in your classroom activities. Topics will include handling of plant life in the classroom, es5ablishing or maintaining outdoor habitats for wildlife, attending to the proper disposal of trash and recycling or reusing as many materials as possible. We ll explore the purpose of Shared Reading and why it works so well to provide multiple, integrated experiences for children to build their language (listening, speaking, reading, and writing) and thinking skills, while simultaneously learning about print.
