In 1986, the New & Renewable Energy Authority (NREA) was established New & Renewable Energy Authority The national focal point for expanding efforts to develop and introduce RE technologies to Egypt on a commercial scale, together with implementation of related energy conservation programs

RE&EE Testing & Certification Center A- NREA Facilities in Cairo

B-Wind Energy Technology Center at Hurghada

RE&EE Testing & Certification Center This center was established in cooperation with EU & Italy. The center includes a set of integrated advanced indoor and outdoor laboratories for testing and certification of renewable energy equipment (solar, wind & biomass) The Center is entrusted to serve the Egyptian energy efficiency standards & labeling program, through specialized laboratories for refrigerators, washing machines, air conditions and lighting units. The Center includes also supporting Labs. : (Aging Chemicals & Physical Optical Electronic Mechanical Pumping).

MENA Center for RE & EE Egypt is hosting a regional center of excellence for renewable energy and energy efficiency in Middle East and North Africa. This center is supported by Germany, Denmark and the EU. Egypt / Germany High Level Joint Committee For Cooperation in Renewable Energy, Energy Efficiency & Environment Egypt and Germany have agreed upon establishing a high level committee on renewable energy, energy efficiency and environment protection.

Potential of Solar Energy Egypt is one of the sun belt countries. In 1991, A solar Atlas for Egypt was issued, concluding that: The direct solar radiation intensity ranges between 1900 KWh/m 2 /y in the North and 2800 KWh/m 2 /y in the South The sun shine duration ranges between 9-11 h/day from North to South, with very few cloudy days.

Achievements Domestic Solar Water Heating 14 solar water heating companies have been established. 500,000 m2 of domestic solar water heating systems have installed. A total area of 150 m 2 solar heating collective systems have been installed in the International Medical Center in Cairo city.

Achievements Domestic Solar Water Heating A project for the dissemination of solar water heating systems in hotels and resorts of red sea coast. This project is being implemented in cooperation with the Italian Ministry of Environment

Achievements Industrial Process Heat A demonstration project located at one of the pharmaceutical companies has been implemented. A total area of 1900 m 2 of solar parabolic collectors to generate 1.3ton / hour of saturated steam at 175 C & 8 bar.

Achievements Photovoltaic PV 5 MW PV for lighting, water pumping, wireless communications, cooling and commercial advertisements on highways. NREA signed a protocol for cooperation with the Italian Ministry of Environment to electrify 2 remote settlements in Matrouh Governorate

Achievements 140 MW Solar thermal power plant The 1st hybrid solar/fossil fuel thermal power plant, with capacity of 140 MW is under implementation. The Plant is expected to be operational by the mid. of 2010.

Proposals for Cooperation Establishing of a 10 MW Solar Power Tower Plant. Feasibility Studying and establishing the second solar thermal power plant project of about 300 MW. Electrification of remote settlements by PV systems. Establishing of a 200 MW wind farm. Upgrading NREA s RE&EE Testing & Certification Center.
