Ministry of Electricity & Energy New & Renewable Energy Authority Renewable Energy in Egypt Grid-Connected Projects Khaled M. Fekry General Manager International Grid-Connected Renewable Energy Policy Forum Mexico City, February 1-3,
The electricity sector The electricity sector policies depend on 3 main Pillars: Diversifying electric energy resources. Improving Energy efficiency and maximizing energy conservation measures. Enhancing the role of renewable energy (RE) in the electric production. R. E. Institutional Framework In 1986, The New & Renewable Energy Authority (NREA) was established as a dedicated organization to introduce RE technologies to Egypt on a commercial scale.
Mandate of NREA Renewable Energy in Egypt Grid-Connected Projects Renewable energy resources assessment. Research, development, demonstration, Testing and evaluation of the different technologies. Implementation of mature technologies. Education, training and information dissemination. Transfer of technology, development of local industry. Testing and certification of RE equipment to development of local standards and codes. NREA Strategy The strategy targets to cover 3% of the electric energy demand by 2010, and to be 17% by 2020

IN THE FIELD OF Wind Energy
owind Energy oresource Assessment in Wind Egypt enjoys high wind regime, particularly in the area of Suez gulf where the wind speed reaches 10 m/sec. A wind atlas for the Suez Gulf Coast was issued in 1996 in cooperation with Denmark. In march 2003, a detailed wind atlas was issued, concluding that the region can host about Mw of wind farms. The atlas is being conducted to cover whole of Egypt and is planned to be finalized in The Most Promising Wind Farms Locations Along The Red Sea Area in Zafarana, Gabal El-Zeit and Hurgada.
owind Energy A Grid connected 5.4 MW Wind Farm at Hurghada Hurghada I : The 1 st pilot wind farm 4x100 Kw using fully imported equipment at Ras Gareb to serve one of our National Oil Company and operative since 1988, and then moved to Hurghada Hurghada II 5 Mw wind farm was implemented in cooperation with Denmark and Germany, has been connected to the grid and operated successfully since 1995, The farm consists of 38 wind turbines of different types of technologies, ranges ( Kw).
