2 Energy policy in Austria Austria s policy is driven by the EU directive (20/20/20). Austrias National Renewable Energy Action Plan indicates that meeting the 34% share of renewables by 2020 under two conditions: a 13% reduction of final energy consumption compared to % increase of renewable energy by 2020 relative to 2008 Green electricity act 2012: additional capacities: hydropower: MW wind power: MW biomass and biogas: 200 MW photovoltaics: MW Seite 2

3 Energy policy in Austria (2) a new energy strategy for the period to 2030 with scenarios to 2050 has to be developed, following the european requirements with strong affords on energy efficiency and renewable energy. energy efficiency and renewable energy are part of the solution, not the problem: main problems now: low electricity market prices because of volatile renewable production and surplus coal power generation. main targets: reduction of import dependency (reduction of supply risks). implementing of future efficiency technolgies in the energy sector. increasing the building renovation rate ( to 3%) efficiency in transmission and distribution infrastructure investments Seite 3

6 Energy future - EU guidelines for subsidies in the enviromental and energy sector cost transparency feed in tariffs will not be allowed for renewable energy production units larger than 5 MW (wind energy) no retention of the austrian feed in tariff wind?: 9,36 cent/kwh, no indexation 13 years guaranteed the producer has to pay for all insurances, to secure the removal with bank guarantee Nuclear power plant Hinkley point (UK) guaranteed feed in tariff: 11,2 cent/kwh, fully indexation, for 35 years State guarantees for contruction and risks, cost for risk and nuclear waste for hundreds of future generations by tax payers will be allowed by EU commission.
