8 Studies at ABS We deliver our training in classrooms of maximum 20 students. As an international student, you are required to study a minimum of 20 hours per week. On top of classroom delivery we are also offering some study options online. This allows you to study at your own pace at the campus or wherever you get internet access. ABS is offering a flexible timetable to suit your needs. We are running day time classes (from 9 AM to 3.30 PM) and evening classes (from 4 PM to 8 PM). You can choose to study during the day or the evening and match your training with your activity outside of the school. 10 Students Support and Services OSHC Health Cover International students undertaking formal studies in Australia, and their dependents (for example, spouses and children under 18 years old), must obtain OSHC. It includes cover for visits to the doctor, some hospital treatment, ambulance cover and limited pharmaceuticals (medicines). OSHC insurers can provide a range of different OSHC products. These may range from a basic product which covers only the compulsory minimum services to comprehensive products which cover, in addition to the compulsory minimum services, extra services as specified under the particular policy. You can find more information, including a list of the providers and average costs, on the Department of Health website: Remember, the Department of Immigration and Border Protection requires overseas students to maintain OSHC for the duration of time they are in Australia. For further information please visit the Department of Immigration and Border Protection website: Accommodation Homestay and Homeshare Homestay is one of the best ways to experience Australian way of life! Living in an Australian home will help you to use your English skills in everyday situations. Your host family will provide you with a private bedroom and desk, breakfast and dinner all week. ABS is working in partnership with the Australian Homestay Network (AHN) to provide our students high standards accommodation. The homestays we are offering are located within 30 minutes of the ABS campus and easy to access by public transport. Homestay The Host provides the Student with all their basic needs, including their own room, meals (optional) and space to study. Student pays a weekly fee. Over the period of their time together the Host assists the Student to become familiar with the local area and customs while staying in a relaxed and friendly household setting. The Student is also encouraged to share with the Host, information about their home country and culture. This interaction is what makes Homestay ideal for someone looking for a unique cultural experience. Airport reception You can book our Airport Pick-up service from Brisbane International and Coolangatta (Gold Coast) Airport. When you arrive at the airport after a long day flight, an ABS representative driver will be there to welcome you and take you directly to your accommodation. 10

11 Homeshare Homeshare is a unique way for students, studying in Australian education institutions, to find safe and comfortable accommodation at very affordable rates. Homeshare is ideal for the more independent student wanting to live in an Australian home as a Home Share guest. Homeshare provides all students with: A safe and secure bedroom Accommodation inclusive of all utilities (ie electricity, gas, water) Host families will provide the student with an area for their own food and use of their kitchen facilities for cooking. Full AHN insurance coverage, including personal liability, contents insurance and public liability for host families. Full management of all payments and receipts 24/7 Emergency assistance A fully trained host family who is able to assist with cultural exchange, including orientation of the local community. The ABS student support service will assist you in any enquiry you have regarding your accommodation. Meet other new international students and the International Student Advisor. This session will be held on the day of your intake. Student ID As an ABS student you will receive a student ID including your picture, student number, DOB, course starting and ending dates. This card is a way to be identified as an ABS student but also gives you some advantages as an international student in Brisbane: Special student fare on public transport near the city (Concession) Discount on cinema tickets, sport events, concert and other venues Discount in many shops and restaurants in the city Social Activities ABS is not only a college; it s also a large student community. 21 Admissions ENTRY REQUIREMENTS ACADEMIC: Students must have completed an equivalent of High School (Australia s year 12) ENGLISH PROFICIENCY: Students must provide IELTS 5.5 or an Intermediate General English Certificate from a NEAS accredited language school. In case you didn t undertake any exam listed above you can undertake the ABS pre entry test. PASSPORT: Valid until the end of your studies. VISAS All students planning to study at ABS will require an appropriate visa. Students at ABS are eligible to apply for a student visa 572. The following is general information. Visa regulations are determined by the immigration Department in Australia and are subject to change. Please verify visa information with the nearest Australian Embassy or Consulate. 22 ABS Terms & Conditions Health Cover OSHC It is a condition of the student visa that all students arrange health insurance before being issued with a visa and that the insurance is maintained during the student s stay in Australia. Visa Requirements Students are required to undertake a full-time study workload of 20 contact hours per week and achieve a minimum rate of academic progress that will enable them to complete the course in the time frame stated in their Confirmation of Enrolment. Students are therefore required to successfully complete a minimum of 50% of their units in a semester. Failure to do so will have to be reported to DIBP (Department of Immigration and Border Protection) and may result in the cancellation of their student visa. Deferral, suspension or cancellation of enrolment Please read the information in the Student Handbook (available from the college s website) before you sign the declaration. Refund Policy 1. No refund will be made if a student is expelled for misconduct or their visa is cancelled by the Australian government. 2. Applications for a refund must be made to the Principal in writing. 3. The enrolment processing fee and payment plan fee are nonrefundable. 4. Tuition fees and OSHC are refunded in full where: a. ABS is advised of the cancellation in writing 28 days or more before a course starts. b. A visa application is rejected by the Australian Embassy. 5. Notices of cancellation are not effective until written notification is received by ABS. 6. If a student cancels his/her course less than 28 days before commencement date, a cancellation fee of 25% will apply to tuition fees. 7. If a student cancels his/her course at least 28 days before the next payment date, no further tuition fees will be charged. 8. If a student cancels his/her course less than 28 days before the next payment date, a cancellation fee of 25% will apply to the tuition fee for the next term. 9. Pro-rata refunds of tuition fees will only be made after the commencement date of the course in special circumstances (i.e. on compelling or compassionate grounds) at the discretion of the Principal. 10. Refund in full will be given only if: a. The course does not start on the agreed day, or b. The course ceased to be provided at any time after its starts but before it is completed, or c. The course is not provided in full because a sanction has been imposed on the provider. 11. Visa rejection refunds require: a. A copy of the visa rejection notification from the Australian Embassy; b. The official ABS receipt. 12. All refunds are made in Australian dollars and will be paid within two weeks of receiving a written claim. 13. All refunds are made payable to and sent to the student in his/ her country of origin. 14. Bank charges are deducted for refunds made by bank draft or electronic transfer. 15. ABS will provide a statement to students that explain how the refund amount has been worked out. 16. Tuition fees are not transferable to another person or institution, but may be transferred to another course within ABS. 17. Course changes within ABS will incur a fee of $ When acceptable documentary evidence is produced, refunds will be at the discretion of ABS. While ABS emphasises the value of pastoral care and seeks to make appropriate and useful services available to students, whether a student avails him or herself of these services is a matter of individual choice. Please note that ABS, its employees, agents or related entities expressly disclaim to the full extent permitted by the law any liability whatsoever arising out of or in respect of information, advice or opinion provided by ABS, its employees or related entities in respect of matters other than the course program itself. 19. In the unlikely event that ABS is unable to deliver your course in full, you will be offered a refund of all the course money you have paid to date. The refund will be paid to you within 2 weeks of the day on which the course ceased being provided. Alternatively, you may be offered enrolment in an alternative course by ABS at no extra cost to you. You have the right to choose whether you would prefer a full refund of course fees, or to accept a place in another course. If you choose placement in another course, we will ask you to sign a document to indicate that you accept the placement. 20. If ABS is unable to provide a refund or place you in an alternative course our Tuition Assurance Scheme, ACPET OSTAS, will place you in a suitable alternative course at no extra cost to you. 21. Finally, if ACPET OSTAS cannot place you in a suitable alternative course, the ESOS Assurance Fund Manager will attempt to place you in a suitable alternative course or, if this is not possible, you will be eligible for a refund as calculated by the Fund Manager. 22
