There is a move away from the traditional skills of one person controlling, directing and maintaining discipline, to a more team-based approach of coaching, facilitating and developing individuals. Today s Managers have a major leadership role and are responsible for facilitating, developing and supporting team cooperation within a strategic framework. The focus is on tactical and strategic issues, looking at the big picture and often evaluating the direction of the organisation. The standards, ethics and values they display will to a significant degree, have effects on the performance of both individuals and teams within an organisation. Course Description The Diploma of Management is recommended for individuals who have responsibility for team or business unit performance and who are required to make a broader contribution to the development and implementation of enterprise strategy. This qualification reflects the role of individuals who are engaged to manage the work of others or to add value to or review management practices. Their role may be in any industry or organisational setting. Typically people in these roles will have considerable experience in their respective industries or vocational areas and couple an informed perspective of the specific work requirements with their managerial approaches. The BSB51107 Diploma of Management requires a sound theoretical knowledge base and managerial competencies to plan, carry out and evaluate own work and/or the work of a team. Qualification gained on completion A Diploma of Business Management will be issued based on successful assessment of 8 units of competency. Course Duration & Delivery The training program is delivered over a period of 28 teaching weeks, entirely at Brisbane Learning Centre. Each training week, students are expected to complete at least 20 hours of faceto-face classes and learning activities. Scheduled classes comprise 12 hours per week with students expected to complete 8 hours during tutoring sessions. At these times trainers will be present to assist students on a one-to-one basis. A teaching week is Monday to Friday 8:00am 9pm Annual Holidays - 4 weeks commencing to include the Christmas Public Holidays. 2 Start Dates Students are able to commence their training course on the first Monday of each term. It is essential for all students to enrol for classes on this day to ensure a place in the class. Terms/sessions are scheduled to commence on a Monday [typically the first of the month] and span four weeks. The first Monday of each term is orientation [where there are new students commencing] and enrolment for the classes offered during the term. Students are assured that every aspect of the program will be covered as the coursework timetable is organised so that all the necessary topics are covered, regardless of when the student starts. All courses are offered and classes scheduled for each during the first term [A3]. On-going scheduling is contingent on enrolment course choices and student numbers for each. If there are less than 3 students enrolled in any class for any session the College reserves the right to defer the class and/or make other arrangements for these students (this may include 1:1 tutoring). 3 Teaching and assessment methods The training program is delivered entirely at Brisbane Learning Centre, combining one-on-one training with practical sessions involving small groups and individual activities. All learning and assessment materials are provided. Training is based on both coursework and project work. Because of the overlap between units of competency, the learning and assessment strategy is designed around departments within a fictitious company, incorporating a combination of reading, practical tasks and collaborative activities. When students have successfully completed all of the activities related to coursework, they will have completed all of the units of competence required for the qualification, along with underpinning skills and knowledge. Coursework is assessed by appropriately qualified trainers and can include oral, written and practical tests. Students will then be ready for summative assessment in the form of projects where they are able to display evidence of competence gathered over time in a range of contexts across all the units. For each module, candidates are provided with face-to-face training, background and reference materials, delivered via one-on-one formal and informal questioning and discussion or small group training. On-line tutorials, interactive CD-ROM, appropriate texts and designated printed matter are also made available for loan. Teaching and assessment strategy The primary mode of delivery for the Diploma of Management will be: classroom delivery 20 hours per week at Brisbane Learning Centre On enrolment, the student will have an interview with the International Manager and the lead trainer where a training plan will be negotiated, credit transfer and *RPL opportunities will be identified, and time frames for completion of units will be set. On completion of the training plan, the student will be issued with the appropriate timetable and appropriate resources/learner guides. New students will be given instructions on how to study effectively in a style that best meets their individual needs and complements classroom delivery. Support mechanisms will be explained, and this additional support includes: Additional Classroom timetabling; support from trainer; Telephone support from student support services; Telephone support from trainer; Assessment Arrangements will be discussed at the beginning of the training program, when the training plan is developed, and will be continually reviewed through the learning and assessment cycle to make sure that the most appropriate and effective method of assessment is used. 4 Assessment strategies will include: Credit Transfer; Recognition of Prior Learning; Completion of workbook activities; Report/Case Studies; Observation; Demonstration & Questioning; Third party testimonials This program is delivered entirely off-the-job at the College campus. It contains face-to-face training led by theory classes and practical (tutorial) sessions involving small groups and individual activities. For each unit, candidates are provided with training manuals and resources. The student s progress will be monitored and reviewed on a weekly basis. Students will be expected to submit units on a regular basis and show adequate progression. Students are encouraged to join small study groups where they are able to to meet with other students currently doing this course outside of class times. Workshops on specific topics will be promoted on the college website. These workshops will be additional to all learning material and are not mandatory, however, will provide an excellent opportunity to student to network and discuss strategies with other students. Timetable The timetable for all classes at Brisbane Learning Centre is attached as A3. Each qualification level has two scheduled classes per day [2 hours x 2], Monday to Friday [20 hours]. There are three tutoring sessions per day Tuesday to Friday that can be utilised for extra study / practice or one-on-one time with a trainer. Students must attend at least 20 hours per week. Our facilities Conveniently located near Central Railway Station, Brisbane Learning Centre is easily accessible and we are open Monday to Friday, 8:00am-9pm. Our training rooms are ergonomically designed to provide a comfortable and safe computing environment, including flat screen monitors as well as appropriate seating and lighting. Students are encouraged to establish and maintain good information management practices such as saving learning and assessment work to a secure network folder and performing regular back-ups to CD. In all labs, the trainer is able to demonstrate tasks to the room via data streaming from their workstation. While our primary method of interaction is face-to-face, Students are able to utilise interactive learning material from their own workstation using CD-ROMs and personal headsets to provide variety of delivery. These learning aides are available as supplements to 20hrs of face-toface learning. Our computer system is primarily a Microsoft environment; however we also have a Linux system and encourage students to become familiar with more than one operating system and different software applications for basic ITC skills such as word processing and spreadsheet tasks. A variety of graphical software packages are used for multimedia tasks ranging from digital photography manipulation and animation to 3D modelling applications. We also have established a Client/Server platform that allows students to perform real practical tasks such as installing and configuring networks, covering security, administration and maintenance issues. 5 We provide a wide range of learning resources including libraries of interactive CD-ROM based material; reference text books with varying degrees of complexity. Our trainers are operating in the industry and continually updating their skills through peer interaction and formal training. Fees Students are required to pay a non-refundable administration fee in advance. Money is required 4 weeks prior to the commencement of the official starting date after the college has accepted the student (a written agreement must have already been signed). The total cost for the Diploma of Business Management is $14, (AUD) which must be paid using a bank draft or Bank Cheque, a minimum of 1 month, or by special arrangement, before the course commencement date, (clearance by banks prior to entry into Australia). This amount includes tuition fees, application /administration fees, cost of books, materials and equipment. There are no compulsory student amenity fees. Note: Students are required to arrange payment for all costs of transport and accommodation in connection with their program of study. Entry Requirements Students are required to have Australian year 10 equivalent education. (Please note: Australian year 12 equivalent is preferred) Academic evidence is required. Mature-aged entry with work experience in the related fields, need to demonstrate prior work or life experience which can be measured against outcomes of the course. This may gain you special entry or credit known as Recognition of Prior Learning. Students are required to have proficiency in English language, or be prepared to undergo an English Learning preparation Course prior to starting date of the course. This is determined by the following prerequisites: IELTS (academic module) score of 5.5; or TOEFL score of 350; or ASLPR minimum individual score of 3; or Sound Achievement in Australian Year 12 English (or equivalent);or Successfully completed acceptable formal course (not ELICOS) where the medium of instruction is English; or A result within Australia of Sound Achievement or equivalent in Year 12 English; or where the Director of Brisbane Learning Centre has given special consideration. All academic qualifications should be submitted to the Manager for verification. They should be the original qualifications or copies of these that have been verified by a Justice of the Peace. 6 Pre-requisites No previous knowledge or experience is required to undertake this course. It is preferred that individuals considering this qualification have achieved the Certificate IV in Frontline Management or other relevant qualification/s, OR have provided evidence of competency in the majority of units required for the Certificate IV in Frontline Management or other relevant qualification/s OR have some vocational experience but without formal supervision or management qualification. For example: Coordinator, Leading Hand, Supervisor or Team Leader. Overseas experience and qualifications: All applicants seeking to establish the relationship between their overseas qualifications and an Australian VET qualification in the Australian Qualifications Framework will be directed to National Office of Overseas Skills Recognition (AEI- NOOSR). For further information please refer to the Student Handbook. National Recognition: BLC recognizes relevant AQF qualifications issued by other RTO s and no fee is payable for National recognition.
