3 Trimester 1 (February - June) LING 552 Intercultural Communication The Intercultural Communication unit explores theoretical approaches and practical applications in the study of communication between people of differing cultural backgrounds. Using case studies from Asia, Europe, Australia and the US, we examine the communicative styles and practices of diverse cultural groups, and their impact on interpersonal communication within and between groups. LING 562 Second Language Acquisition This unit provides an overview of approaches to the study of second language acquisition. It deals with key linguistic, psycholinguistic and sociocultural theories of how a second language is acquired. Topics covered include: age-related effects, the role of the first language and the linguistic environment. FNDN 500 Studies in English for Academic and Professional Contexts This unit develops advanced academic writing and research skills to equip students for successful postgraduate study. The unit will explore spoken and written academic genres relevant to students disciplines of study. EDLI 502 TESOL 1 The TESOL 1 unit introduces TESOL methodology for those intending to teach a broad range of learners whose first language is a language other than English. It covers English language analysis, the principles of language learning, and assessment of learners English language proficiency. Trimester 2 (July - October) LING 551 Issues in Applied Linguistics This unit introduces students to the main strands of Applied Linguistics, giving an overview of the nature of the discipline and some of the controversies which exist within it. Topics covered include: language in social context, language use and the history and practice of language teaching. LING 553 The English Language The English Language unit covers the major areas of English grammar, such as sentence structure. The unit pays close attention to variation in English, with an eye on regional variants (such as Indian English), occupational variants, and the differences between speech and writing. Finally, it covers the emergence of English as a global language and asks questions about the future of Standard English. LING 572 Multilingual Approaches to TESOL The Multilingual Approaches to TESOL unit provides a critical perspective on international practices of teaching English as a second language. It incorporates perspectives from the fields of language policy, bilingualism and multilingualism studies, identity in second language users and teacher cognition. EDLI 505 TESOL II The TESOL 2 unit further explores TESOL methodology for those intending to teach a broad range of learners whose first language is a language other than English. It emphasises the pedagogical implications of learners needs for English language proficiency in international contexts: program design, lesson planning, classroom teaching skills, and student language use beyond the ESL classroom. This unit includes an observation-based practicum rather than a teaching practicum. Students should note that completion of EDLI505 does not confer eligibility to teach in the Australian TESOL sector. Admission Steps Admission to UNE involves a number of steps as set out below. These steps may assist applicants through the various stages of the admission process. If applicants have any questions at any stage during the process they should contact International Marketing and Pathways for assistance at [email protected] 1. Applicants can apply online at: All applicants must use this application form. Applicants who wish to apply through one of UNE s authorised agents can access the following website to locate their nearest agent: Applicants should ensure that they attach certified copies of transcripts of all relevant previous studies and evidence of English language proficiency and any other documentation requested on the application form. Upon assessment, if the application is successful a conditional or unconditional offer of admission will be issued together with the International Offer Guide, an Offer Acceptance Form and all other information relevant to an applicant accepting their offer. The University will advise students in writing if their application is unsuccessful. 3. Applicants need to sign the Offer Acceptance Form and return it to International Marketing and Pathways together with the required payment and any other documentation requested by the University. 4. When International Marketing and Pathways receives the completed Offer Acceptance Form and the required tuition fees from students intending to study on campus, it will process the payment and issue the Confirmation of Enrolment (COE) the form required to apply for a student visa from an Australian Embassy, High Commission or the Department of Immigration and Citizenship (DIAC) as appropriate. Students must obtain a student visa before they come to study full time in Australia. Information on obtaining a student visa is available online at 5. Upon being granted their student visa, students intending to study on campus should make travel arrangements including applying on-line for accommodation at: Students should advise International Services of their travel arrangements and request airport or railway station reception as instructed in the International Offer Guide. 6. On-campus students should arrive and attend the international student orientation and enrolment after which they will commence their formal course at UNE Practical experience EDLI505, TESOL II, includes a 60 - hour observation-based practicum in an Australian English-language teaching centre. 4 5
4 Tuition Fees Annual course fees only cover the cost of tuition. They do not include other expenses associated with university study such as books and equipment, accommodation and living expenses. For students successful in gaining admission to study at UNE the Offer of Admission will list the exact tuition fees a student is required to pay. The offer of admission will also list other fees payable including compulsory Overseas Student Health Cover. The cost of tuition fees, Overseas Student Health Cover and accommodation fees may vary annually. Any increase from year to year is not generally expected to exceed 7.5%. Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC) Overseas Student Health Cover is the private health insurance international students and their dependents are required to purchase as a condition of their student visa. Students should note that it is a condition of their student visa to maintain current OSHC for the duration of their visa. OSHC covering the entire visa length must be arranged prior to arrival in Australia. UNE currently has an agreement with Medibank Private, a private health fund, to facilitate the provision of OSHC for international students. Medibank Private Overseas Student Health Cover pays the cost of most medical and hospital treatment students may require while studying in Australia and will contribute to the cost of prescription medicines and emergency ambulance transport. The current cost of Overseas Student Health Cover and further information about the scheme is located at www. medibank.com.au Refund of Tuition Fees The University of New England s refund of tuition fees policy is based upon and is in accordance with the National Code of Practice for Registered Authorities and Providers of Education and Training to Overseas Students (the National Code), the Education Services for Overseas Students Act 2000 (ESOS Act 2000) and Education Services for Overseas Student Regulations 2001 (ESOS Regulations 2001). This policy applies to all international students studying on campus or by distance regardless of the person actually paying the fees. The policy is located at: Obtaining a Student Visa International students intending to study full-time on campus at UNE will need to obtain a student visa. The Australian Department of Immigration and Citizenship (DIAC) website has comprehensive information on applying for a student visa to study in Australia, including application forms. Please note that student visas granted to international students for their study in Australia have conditions attached. These are outlined in detail on the DIAC website and students obligations are also outlined in the International Offer Guide issued with the offer of admission. Students should regularly check the DIAC website for updated information and changes to legislation and processing arrangements affecting their intention to study in Australia on a student visa. ESOS Framework International students who are intending to study on campus in Australia should be aware that Australia s laws promote quality education and consumer protection. These laws are known as the ESOS Framework and they include the Education Services for Overseas Students (ESOS) Act 2000 and the National Code. For further information about the ESOS Framework, students should refer to the following Australian Government website: Accommodation The city of Armidale offers different accommodation options for students including fully catered lodging, boarding houses, share houses and private rentals. The University of New England offers seven residential colleges and a village residential system on campus. All colleges on campus are fully catered, which means that breakfast, lunch and dinner are provided every day, as are regular cleaning and linen services. Accommodation in the Wright Village is self catered, which means students buy their own groceries and cook their own food. Further information about accommodation options can be found online at 6 7
