1 REMOTE DESKTOP SETUP INSTRUCTIONS 1. Setting up your work desktop to allow Remote Desktop connectivity Windows does not have this feature enabled by default, so we will go through the steps on how to enable this feature. First thing you need to do is move your mouse pointer over the My Computer on your desktop, and then Right Click the mouse button. You should see the following: Choose Properties by moving your mouse pointer down to Properties, and then hitting your Left mouse button. This will bring up another menu that should look like the following:

2 You now need to move your mouse pointer over to Remote Settings. After doing so, click the Left mouse button again. You should now be in the Remote tab menu, and it should look like the picture below: You need to move your mouse pointer down to the Remote Desktop section of this menu, and then hit your left mouse button in the circle next to Allow connections from computers running any version of Remote Desktop (less secure). The circle should be dark now(if it s already dark, then your desktop is already configured for remote connectivity). After doing this, you must move your mouse pointer to the OK box and click your Left mouse button. If you do not choose OK, then the changes you just made, will not take effect. Now, the next step is to attain your IP address for your work desktop. Again, this is done on your desktop at work (the computer you want to remote connect to). To find your IP address you need to move your mouse pointer to the Start button at the bottom left of your screen, click your Left mouse button, then move your mouse pointer over to the empty box with Search programs and files in it, and then Left click your mouse button again. See below for an example:

3 After Left clicking your mouse button in that box, type cmd (without quotation marks, as shown above), then either hit the Enter key or click OK with your Left mouse button. This will bring up a black box (see below), or a command prompt if you want proper terminology: See below for an example: The next step is to type ipconfig in this black box (without quotation marks, as shown above) and then hit the Enter key. The item that you are after is the IPv4 Address (shown as XX.XX in yellow in this example). Make a note of this address, you will need this when you are out of the office, and you want to make a remote connection to your office desktop. You are now done setting up your office desktop to accept remote connections. Type exit in the command prompt and hit Enter (this will close this screen out). Now you are ready to connect to your office desktop from outside of work.

4 2. Connecting to your office desktop while away from the office Now we will step through how to connect to your office desktop when you are away from the office. First, you need to connect to the VPN concentrator by going to the website that was given to you, and then logging in per those VPN instructions. After you establish a secure VPN connection, and you have a little key icon at the bottom right of your screen, you are ready for remote connectivity to your office desktop. To do so, you need to move your mouse pointer down to the Start button at the bottom left of your screen, and then clicking your Left mouse button. Then choose All Programs, then Accessories. You should see the following options in the Accessories menu: You want to move your mouse pointer down to Remote Desktop Connection, and then Left click your mouse on that. This will bring up a program called Remote Desktop Connection (see below)

5 You will need that IP Address that you noted earlier when you were in the office. Simply type your IP Address in the Computer box (see example above), and then choose Connect by moving your mouse pointer down to it, and then Left clicking it. You should see a box that will ask you for a User name and a Password. This is the User name and Password that you use to log into your office desktop everyday. Enter them here, then Left click OK with your mouse (see example below). You may get a pop-up screen like in the example below. Simply choose Yes and it will continue on to logging you onto your desktop. To avoid getting this everytime you connect, simply left click the box next to Don t ask me again for connections to this computer. That s it, you should be logged into your office desktop now, and it should appear as if you were sitting at your desk. Enjoy.
