1 Installing the Virtual Desktop Application (MAC) The folowing instructions will guide you through the process of installing the components necessary to connect in to the NEL B Virtual Desktop environment from a Microsoft Windows system. 1. Open a web browser and navigate to Under the section named Virtual Desktop Remote Access click on the link named Apple Mac Client Download. Your computer should download a file named VirtualDesktop-macclient-v dmg. Take note of the location on your local machine that you are save the file to (by default your Mac should try and save the file in the Downloads folder). 2. Once the download has finished, locate it and double-click it. The following screen should appear. 3. Click Agree, depending on your Macs security configuration you may get asked to supply an Apple username and password with Administrative privileges. If you do then please supply the credentials you have set up on your local Mac for installing software (OSX will prompt for these any time you try to make a change to your computer so you should be familiar with them. If not, then contact tms@nesl.edu and they can try to assist).

2 The following screen will appear. 4. Simply drag the VMware Horizon Client icon on top of the folder with the A symbol in it. After about a minute the process should be complete and you will have a new Application Icon in your Applications folder named VMware Horizon Client as follows. For convenience sake you might wish to drag this to your desktop or Dock bar.

Double-click the icon, you may receive the following message depending on your Mac s configuration, if you do just click the Upgrade button to complete the process (should only need to ever do this the first time you are installing). Once the application can launch the following screen will appear, double-click the icon labeled New Server,

4 6. The following windows will appear. In the Enter the name of the Connection Server box type mydesktop.nesl.edu. Also deselect the Always connect at launch option. Click the Connect button (Note: you should only need to do this step once, these settings will be saved for future use) 7. A login box should appear as follows. Put in the network username and password you use to log on to your computer at work (same combination you use to access webmail, omitting suffix in the User Name field) 8. If your credentials are correct, you will be brought to the following screen. Double-click the Desktop icon.

5 Note: After you make the initial connection the Desktop icon will be named mydesktop.nesl.edu, just double click it and the rest of the process should continue as below. 9. The virtual desktop will start to load. Note: Unlike the login process you will be used to seeing on your work computer a box will pop up referencing a system called ProfileUnity. This is just the application that ensures all your personal settings like Internet Browser Favourites and Desktop Shortcuts get saved whenever you add any new ones etc.

6 Note: Depending on the way your Mac security is set up you may receive the following message: If you do, select Do not show this dialog again and click Deny 10. When completed you will be presented with a Windows desktop similar to the one you will be used to seeing on your desktop PC in your office. You can now begin to interact with it as you would normally do, launching applications and accessing the network folders you have permissions to use.

When you are finished with your session you can either log off using the Start menu Or if you just want to temporarily disconnect your session because you intend to pick up where you left off you can just select the Disconnect icon from the top left of the Virtual Desktop session (it looks like en electrical plug with an X in the middle). *Please note, it is always advisable to log off if possible as it means you will get a fresh desktop the next time you log on which should give yo uthe best performance experience. If you do disconnect a session and don t reattach to the system after 48 hours the session will automatically be logged off so please ensure you save your work any time you exit the Virtual Desktop.

8 Setting Up Microsoft Outlook The very first time you log on to the Virtual Desktop and launch Microsoft Outlook you will need to set up your profile. Just follow the steps below to do this. 1. Locate the Microsoft Outlook 2010 icon (located on the desktop that is displayed in step 11 above). The following message will appear, click Next 2) The following screen will appear, leave the default of Yes selected and click Next

9 3) You will be brought to the following screen. Just enter your Address and password in the applicable fields and click Next 4) Assuming thre credentials you provided are correct the last screen should appear as follows. Simply click Finish and Outlook should open as normal and display your mailbox. From that point on you can just open Outlook as normal without having to work through the above procedure.
