1 Faculty/Staff instructions for connecting to the Hood College VPN to gain access to your office computer Note: These instructions were written for Windows 7 Professional. Some screens may be different if you are running a different version of Windows 7. Also, these instructions assume that you have an active connection to the internet. If at any point during setup you are asked to whether you want to dial a connection to the Internet before connecting via the VPN connection, please select No and/or disable the option. Step 1: Set up a VPN connection: A. Open the Control Panel by clicking on the Start orb at the bottom left or by pressing the Windows key. Then click Control Panel. B. In the window that opens, select Network and Internet and then click on Network and Sharing Center C. Click on Set up a new connection or network.

2 D. In the window that opens, select Connect to a workplace then click Next. E. In the window that opens, select Use my Internet connection (VPN).

3 F. You will now need to enter some information. Use the following: a. Internet Address: b. Destination Name: Hood VPN Connection c. Put a check in the box labeled Don t connect now; just set it up G. Click Next H. You will now need to enter some information. Use the following: a. Username: Enter your Hood address (username@hood.edu) b. Password: Enter your Hood password c. Do NOT check the remember password box. This could give any person using your computer access to the Hood network. I. Click Create then click Close

4 Step 2: Setup a VPN shortcut: A. The Network and Sharing Center window should still be open. If it is not, click on Start (round orb at bottom left), then Control Panel. Select Network and Internet, and then click on Network and Sharing Center. B. Click on Change adapter settings. C. Right click the Hood VPN Connection you just created and select Create Shortcut.

5 D. Click Yes to create a shortcut on the desktop E. Click the X to close the Network connections window Step 3: Set up a Remote Desktop connection and shortcut: A. Click the Start orb at the bottom left or press the Windows key then click All Programs then click Accessories then click Remote Desktop Connection B. In the window that opens, click Show Options or Options C. You will now need to enter some information. Use the following: a. Computer: Enter your office computer s IP address (IT should have already helped you find this information) b. Username: Enter your address (username@hood.edu) c. Do NOT put a check in the box for Allow me to save me credentials

6 d. Click Save As to create a shortcut e. In the window that opens, click Desktop from the left pane then click in the File name box and type Hood Office Computer then click Save f. On the Remote Desktop Connection window, click Hide Options or Options g. Click the red X to close the Remote Desktop Connection window D. All the setup steps are now complete. The Connection steps listed next are what you will use each time you want to connect remotely to your office computer.

7 VPN/Remote Desktop Connection and Disconnection Steps 1. Double click the Hood VPN Connection shortcut on your Desktop a. Enter your Hood password and Click Connect b. Do NOT save the username and password. This could give any person using your computer access to the Hood network. c. You should see a window showing the VPN connection process d. When that window disappears, you should be connected to the Hood VPN. If you receive any error messages, contact the IT Department for help.

8 e. To confirm you are connected, double click the Hood VPN Connection shortcut again. It will show your connection status. The media state should be Connected. Click the X to close the window. 2. Double click the Hood Office Computer shortcut on your Desktop a. If you are prompted with an Unknown publisher message, put a check in the Don t ask me again box and then click Connect

9 b. In the window that appears, enter your Hood mail password then click OK c. If you are prompted with a message asking Do you want to connect anyway?, put a check in the Don t ask me again box and then click Yes d. You should now be connected to your office computer. If you receive any error messages, contact the IT Department for help. 3. When you are finished working, disconnect in the reverse order. a. Close your remote desktop session by clicking the X in the upper right or click the Start Orb then click Log Off or Disconnect b. Close your VPN connection by double clicking the Hood VPN Connection shortcut and then clicking Disconnect.
