American Senior High School was recognized by the Federal ECTAC Committee which acknowledges schools that exceed expectations (ONLY HIGH SCHOOL IN FLORIDA TO RECEIVE THIS HONOR)! Approximately 88% of all students that walked into American Senior High School as freshmen 4 years ago graduated in 2013! American Senior High School has a new Biomedical Magnet! American Senior High School was ranked #2 in all of Miami-Dade County in Schools Sports Programs by the Miami Herald! American Senior High s JROTC was Superior Rated! American Senior High s Band was also Superior Rated

American Senior High School s Top Graduates received early acceptance to Colombia University, John Hopkins University, Brown University, and Georgia Tech to name just a few! American Senior High School has partnered with St. Thomas University to offer Dual Enrollment Courses on Campus! American Senior High School has ten certified college adjunct professors as part of it s staff! Dual enrollment courses offered are English 101 and 102, Pre- Calculus, Spanish Literature, Astronomy, Principles of Business, Theatre as Communication and Sports Administration

Through a combination of AP/AICE/Dual Enrollment and Industry certification, a student can graduate with a year of college completed free of charge!! American Senior School offers industry certification as a Daycare Asst., Nursing Asst., EKG Tech., Medical Adm. Asst., Computer Automated Designer, Photoshop, Autodesk Inventor, and Dreamweaver! American Senior High School has 7 functioning academies (Academy of Biomedical Careers ABC, Academy of Hospitality and Tourism: AOHT, Academy of Information Technology and Business: AOIT, Engineering Academy for Student Excellence: EASE, Fine Arts Academy, Law Studies Academy, and Freshman Academy (PALS)

5 Advanced International Certification of Education (AICE)/Cambridge CRITERIA Incoming 9th graders who want to be considered for the AHS AICE/Cambridge Program must submit an application to their counselor to be reviewed. They will be evaluated according to the following criterion:! Grades (3.0 GPA)! FCAT Scores (3 or above) or comparable national examinations! Teacher recommendations (one each from English, Math, and Science)! Current math placement and grade (Algebra I or above)! Conduct records and Attendance records! Students must maintain a 3.0 un-weighted GPA while in the AICE/Cambridge program as well as score 3 or above on all FCAT components.

24 American Senior High is a Title I School. What does this mean for you? Title I status means more money in our school to expand our programs and activities to provide the best educational experience for your teen. How does a school qualify to become a Title I school? To qualify for funding during the school year, a school had to have 75% or more of its student population receive free or reduced lunch.

25 How have we used our Title I dollars here at American Senior High School? é Saturday school as well as After school tutorial programs in reading, science, and math é To pay for a Reading Coach and two Reading Teachers to assist our students scheduled into Intensive Reading classes é Fieldtrips é Supplies and materials é Community Involvement Specialist to increase our parental involvement efforts at the school

26 PARENTAL TIPS for STUDENT SUCCESS Every parent wants his/her child to grow up to be a healthy, happy, and a successful adult. Parents are very important to their child s development. Here are some ideas to help you ensure you child s success in school.! Get to know your child s teachers and counselors! Make sure your child gets enough sleep so that he/she will be alert in school.! Make sure that your child attends school each day.! Encourage your child to behave in school.! Praise your child for good work, good effort, and good behavior at home and at school.! Leave large amounts of money or valuables at home! Keep all electronic devices at home except for School Board Approved electronic devices! MOST IMPORTANTLY, monitor the Parent Portal and check your child s electronic grade book in order to be up to date on your their academic performance.
