2 Our Objectives for Tonight Are BCHS course registration timeline PSAT and Khan Academy SAT prep Advanced Placement (AP) and Dual Enrollment (DE) comparison AP Capstone Diploma Program Overview of advanced academic options available at The BCHS How AVID can be used to support enrollment in rigorous courses Pinellas Technical College (PTC) options at The BCHS College entrance requirements Florida University System entrance requirements Bright Futures Scholarship Program An opportunity to visit with college/university admissions representatives, PTC, military branch recruiters, and various BCHS teachers
3 Scheduling Process/Timelines for 16-17: Current teachers should have reviewed their subject area course recommendations with students during 1/19-1/22 Administrators individually counsel all students who demonstrated highest AP potential (in one or more courses) 1/12 through 1/29 9 th and 10 th grade assemblies for students with 2.5 or higher unweighted GPA were on 1/22 College and Career Evening on 1/27 from 6pm to 8pm thank you for being here! Vigue visits to AVID 1, AVID 2, AVID 3, AP World History, AP US History, and English 3 Honors classes during 1/12-1/15 and 1/25-1/28 PERT (reading, writing, and math) for qualifying 10 th graders on Thursday, 1/28 and for any 11 th grader who requested to test students will receive a pass to test in the AM or PM, one chance only 11 th grade course selections, 1/25-1/29, in US History (along with Future Plans update, Khan Academy registration, PSAT score login, link PSAT to Khan) 10 th grade course selections, 2/1-2/5, in World History (along with Khan Academy SAT prep registration, PSAT score login, link PSAT to Khan) 9 th grade course selections, 2/8-2/12, in AP Hug, Anthropology, JROTC, and Leadership (along with Khan Academy registration, PSAT score login, link PSAT to Khan)
4 PSAT and FREE Khan Academy SAT Preparation PSAT: Your PSAT results from October, 2015, are available online through your College Board account Your guidance counselor has your College Board access code if you do not have it Results will show your strengths and areas for growth The PSAT you took has been redesigned to prepare you for the new SAT (new SAT starts this spring) You can register this spring to take the PSAT one last time in October 2016 for $15 11 th grade PSAT results are used for $180,000,000 national scholarship opportunities Khan Academy SAT preparation, guidance counselors seminars will: Help you create your Khan Academy SAT prep account Log into College Board to access your PSAT results Link your PSAT results to SAT Khan Academy personalized learning will occur You should do as much online SAT prep as possible this spring, summer, next fall
5 BCHS College Level Courses ADVANCED PLACEMENT (AP) HS Transcript only Standardized curriculum from College Board Open access to motivated students Only at HS No cost to student DUAL ENROLLMENT (DE) HS & College Transcript Locally defined curriculum Minimum testing & GPA requirements At HS or SPC Campus No cost to student
6 Advanced Placement (AP) Program College level AP courses are taught on the BCHS campus by our high school teachers BCHS will offer up to 23 courses based on student interest and course registration requests AP teachers are trained/approved by the College Board, use college level materials, and have a course syllabus that is approved by the College Board AP exams are administered in May free of charge to all BCHS students during the school day AP exams are approximately three hours long and the schedule is set by the College Board AP Exam grades range from one to five. Most colleges and universities accept a score of three or higher for college credit
7 AP Capstone Program AP Capstone was developed by the College Board, with guidance from some of the best universities in our country with a purpose of developing HS students who are ready to read, write, study, and research at the level that colleges and universities require Two year program you sign up for it simply by selecting the courses AP Seminar Grade 11 AP Research Grade 12 (for students who took AP Seminar) Passing both exams = AP Capstone Seminar & Research Certificate Passing both exams + four other AP exams = AP Capstone Diploma
8 Dual Enrollment (DE) Program DE is a program that allows high school students to earn high school and college credits at the same time Students should be in grades 11 and 12 can take DE courses on the BCHS campus and/or SPC campus. Next year we will offer five DE classes here at BCHS Students must have a 3.0 unweighted cumulative grade point average (GPA) and they should be in 11 th or 12 th grade with the exception of the College Experience class which requires a 2.5 GPA DE students must maintain a 2.0 college GPA and a 3.0 high school GPA in order to continue taking DE courses. Students need to earn grade of C or better to receive college credit and to remain eligible for college enrollment To determine if a student is academically ready to take DE classes, the PERT, ACT, or SAT needs to be taken BCHS will provide the PERT to qualifying 10 th graders and preregistered 11 th graders on 1/28/16

11 The Advancement Via Individual Determination (AVID) Program The AVID Program is designed to mentor and tutor students taking one or more honors, DE, or AP courses Students are taught organizational and study skills to better assist and prepare them for success in a rigorous curriculum College students tutor AVID students Preparation for the transition to college In order to be enrolled in AVID, students must be enrolled in: at least one honors or AP course in 9 th grade at least two honors or AP courses in 10 th grade at least one AP or DE course in 11 th grade at least two AP or DE courses in 12 th grade If you are interested in AVID, please see either: Dr. Isaac in room (AVID coordinator for our school) Ms. Darbois in room (9 th grade AVID teacher) Mr. Perkins in room (10 th grade AVID teacher) Ms. Goode in room (9 th, 11 th and 12 th grade AVID teacher)
12 Pinellas Technical College (PTC) PTC offers custom training for business and industry in the highly-technical and specialized areas of medical, automotive, electronics, construction, manufacturing, and a variety of service occupations Incoming juniors and seniors who meet eligibility requirements may take a bus from our campus to PTC St. Petersburg Campus in the morning, returning for lunch and afternoon classes on our campus The BCHS offers Materials and Processes Technology, taught by Mr. Taylor for 9 th, 10 th, and 11 th graders. This elective course is designed to give our students experiences in various industry trade careers PTC courses available to BCHS students in : Automotive Service Technology Building Construction Cosmetology (12 th grade only, 1 year program) Drafting HVAC AC (12 th grade only, 1 year program) Landscape (12 th grade only, 1 year program) Photography Welding Automotive Collision Repair/Refinishing Commercial Foods (12 th grade only, 1 year program) Digital Video Electrical Jewelry Pharmacy Tech (12 th grade only, 1 year program) Plumbing Technologies
13 College and University Acceptance Acceptance means you apply and your resume determines whether or not you get accepted Colleges and universities look at your HS resume for: What types of courses did he/she take; were they regular, honors, or AP/DE levels? What kind of grades did he/she earn in those courses? What is his/her unweighted and weighted cumulative GPA? How did he/she score on the ACT and/or SAT (best combined scores)?
