7 NEW ZEALAND DIPLOMA IN ENGINEERING (CIVIL) (LEVEL 6) SC1101 Duration: Starts January for two years Study: Full-time or part-time equivalent Location: Rotokauri Campus As a civil engineer with a New Zealand Diploma in your days will be spent working on the design, construction and maintenance of civil engineering infrastructure, from roads and bridges, to harbors and sewerage disposal facilities. You will work on well defined engineering problems, developing specialised practical knowledge throughout your career in your chosen area. Credits gained in this programme can be used towards the Bachelor of Technology (Civil). 8 PROGRAMMES BACHELOR OF ENGINEERING TECHNOLOGY (CIVIL) SC1001 Duration: Starts February for three years Study: Full-time or part-time equivalent Location: Rotokauri Campus Graduates of the Bachelor of Technology (Civil) apply mathematical, natural science and engineering fundamentals to civil engineering infrastructure such as roads, bridges, harbours and sewerage facilities. You will be asked to design and oversee the execution of solutions for a broad range of engineering problems. You ll get to research and investigate possibilities in order to propose the best options and most appropriate techniques and resources. This programme is approved under a New Zealand wide framework for threeyear engineering technology degrees. You ll benefit from a practical, hands on approach, including undertaking a real project for an employer. You will learn from respected industry professionals in small classes, allowing for plenty of interaction with your tutors. The six largest Institutes of Technology and Polytechnics of New Zealand, known as the Metro Group, have consulted with industry leaders to create an up-to-date, industry-relevant programme. The Bachelor of Technology is accredited by the Institution of Professional Engineers New Zealand (IPENZ). Upon graduation, combined with a period of work experience, you ll be eligible to apply for membership of IPENZ as a Technical Member (TIPENZ). MAJORS: You will choose between two majors in civil engineering: Water and Waste Specialising in civil water and waste engineering you will gain an in-depth knowledge of the principles and practice relating to: water reticulation systems; the treatment and disposal of liquid and solid wastes; catchment run-off, erosion, water balances and sustainable land use; urban wastewater and storm water systems. You will be able to apply your expertise to projects in professional civil engineering environments. Roading and Transportation You will also develop the skills to work from a sound engineering base with skills to competently manage technical operations and to liaise effectively with design and management professionals, clients, regulatory authorities and contractors. You will also gain an understanding of different cultures and in particular an awareness and clear understanding of tangata whenua and the implications of the Treaty of Waitangi and the Resource Management Act. WHAT YOU LL STUDY First Year In the first year you ll study six broad engineering papers and two papers specific to your major: Computing Communication Mechanics Mathematics Design and Drawing Management Principles Second Year In your second year all your papers will be specific to your specialisation. Third Year In your third and final year you ll put all the skills and processes you ve learned into completing a practical, industry based project. If you ve gained employment then your project can be tailored to suit your workplace. CONNECTIONS WITH INDUSTRY Wintec tutors are highly trained and qualified in their specialist fields. PURPOSE-BUILT ENGINEERING FACILITY You will learn in a brand new, purpose built trades and engineering facility on the Rotokauri Campus. This facility provides learning opportunities that reflect industry standards and uses the latest techniques and technologies. ENTRY CRITERIA To enter this programme you will need: A minimum of 42 credits at level 3 or higher on the New Zealand Qualifications Framework, including a minimum of 14 credits at level 3 or higher in each of two subjects, with a further 14 credits at level 3 or higher taken from one or two additional domains on the New Zealand Qualifications Framework including a minimum of 14 credits in physics and 14 credits in mathematics (algebra and calculus); and A minimum of 8 literacy credits at level 2 or higher in English or te Reo M^aori; 4 credits must be in reading and 4 credits must be in writing; or The New Zealand Diploma in (NZDE) with a 60% or better overall grade average or have completed at least two years relevant work experience post-graduation, or admission approved by the programme committee/head of School/Centre Director; or Equivalent academic qualifications If you do not meet standard admission requirements, but are over 20 years old and can demonstrate a reasonable likelihood of success, a special admission may be granted to you. NATIONAL CERTIFICATE IN MECHANICAL ENGINEERING (LEVEL 2) TE1007 Duration: Six months starting in February Study: Full-time Location: Rotokauri Campus If you re interested in learning the skills for a career in mechanical engineering and fabrication, then this programme is right for you. WHAT YOU LL LEARN Study is divided into 30% theory and 70% practical, so you ll spend a lot of time learning by doing. INDUSTRY TUTORS AND CONNECTIONS Wintec tutors are highly trained and qualified in their specialist fields. Many have recent or ongoing experience in the industry. They are up-to-date with what you need to know for future employment. If you successfully gain this qualification you have a good chance of gaining an apprenticeship with engineering and manufacturing companies. You ll learn to design, build and maintain a range of machinery. You ll also learn how to calculate costs and materials needed for a machine-building project or production run, and carry out feasibility studies using specialist software. Wintec has worked closely with IPENZ (Institute of Professional Engineers) to ensure you re trained not only to New Zealand standards but international standards as well. So you could spend your day determining the requirements of the production manager, carrying out feasibility studies, researching the use of energy sources, machinery and materials, using CAD software to model plans or preparing drawings of machines or machine parts. With a NZDE (electrical) you will have the skills to work on well defined electrical engineering problems. Wintec has worked closely with the Institute of Professional Engineers of New Zealand (IPENZ) to ensure you re trained not only to New Zealand standards but international standards as well. You can also use credits gained on this course towards your Bachelor of Technology (Electrical). WHAT YOU LL STUDY With a combination of compulsory and elective papers you ll gain the core knowledge and practical skills needed for working in areas such as telecommunications, the power industry and electronic engineering. 18 PROGRAMMES BACHELOR OF ENGINEERING TECHNOLOGY (ELECTRICAL) SC1001 Duration: Starts February for three years Study: Full-time or part-time equivalent Location: Rotokauri Campus Learn theory and practical skills using up-to-date technology in our dedicated engineering labs, and equip yourself for a career in electrical engineering. The six largest technical institutes of New Zealand, known as the Metro Group, have consulted with industry leaders to create this, industry-relevant programme. MAJORS: Electrical engineering includes the specialist areas of: Electronic Graduate ready to work as a technologist in specialist areas such as: electrical power engineering, telecommunications engineering, electronics or industrial measurement and control. Your work may include the design, installation, control, operation and maintenance of power systems, telecommunication networks, process industries and manufacturing industrial plants. Power If you choose to major in electrical - power engineering, you will graduate competent at analysing, solving, managing and taking responsibility for broadly-defined electrical and power engineering problems and activities. You ll have an in-depth knowledge of the operation and protection of power systems; an understanding of the design requirements for power systems; in depth knowledge of the operation and performance of electrical machines; and a knowledge of the fundamental components of power electronic systems. WHAT YOU LL STUDY First Year In the first year you ll study core engineering modules and two modules specific to your major.
