4 THE WORLD OF NURSING I currently teach mental health and addiction nursing in the Bachelor of Nursing degree. I have worked as a Registered Nurse for over 25 years and I know that nurses can make a huge difference to a person s health experience and this can transform people s lives. Both nurses and health service users value very highly our relationship with each other and so, in my teaching, I strive to support nursing students to be kind, compassionate and caring as well as having a sound knowledge and understanding of health. On this course you will develop an understanding of what is expected at tertiary level study, along with the skills, knowledge and confidence that you need to succeed in health-related studies. 7 DIPLOMA IN ENROLLED NURSING (LEVEL 5) HL1101 Duration: Starts July for 18 months Study: Full-time or part-time equivalent Location: Hamilton City Campus If you want to work in a variety of clinical settings as an enrolled nurse and valued member of the health team, then this programme is right for you. Graduate with the opportunity to register with the Nursing Council of New Zealand and practise under the delegation of a registered nurse. WHAT YOU LL STUDY You ll learn in Wintec s purpose-built simulated learning environments from tutors who are experienced registered nurses. WHAT YOU LL STUDY Professional nursing knowledge Interpersonal relationships Research skills Human science Clinical and health assessment Management and leadership PRACTISE WHAT YOU LEARN Nursing is a hands-on career and that s the way we teach it at Wintec. Our real-world simulated learning area is set up as an actual ward where you practise on computerised patient models that assume real life health issues. Your tutors are all experienced registered nurses with specific clinical skills. You will do a minimum of 1100 hours practical experience across four of the following areas - chronic disability, elderly care, acute, family and infant care. You ll learn on real patients under the supervision of a registered nurse at our partnership organisations - Waikato DHB, private facilities, Māori health providers and elderly care centres. These organisations also offer potential future employment opportunities. ONLINE FLEXIBILITY All study modules have elements including reference materials, interactive learning tools and assessment work available via Moodle, Wintec s online teaching and learning system. INTERNATIONALLY RECOGNISED DEGREE At the completion of the programme, you will sit a Nursing Council of New Zealand registration exam and exit with an internationally recognised degree. On this unique programme you will develop the knowledge and skills you need to become an in-demand Registered Nurse in a variety of health-care settings, while incorporating information from both the western and Māori worlds. The programme supports the pertinent articles of the Treaty of Waitangi (partnership, protection and participation) by implementing a body of knowledge that is explicitly Māori. Your Tihei Mauri Ora tutors and Kaiāwhina are all qualified registered nurses who identify as Māori. WHĀNAU IN NURSING You will learn through whānau-based tutorials covering the philosophical background that sits alongside nursing theory and practice. This is taught using the four dimensions of physical well-being, thoughts and emotions, spirituality (the connections with ancestors), and nursing the people around the patient e.g. whānau. REAL WORLD EXPERIENCE Wintec has partnerships with the Waikato DHB, private hospitals, Māori health centres, and elderly care centres where you will undertake your clinical experience. 10 THE WORLD OF MIDWIFERY The equipment provided by Wintec to aid our learning was fantastic. Not only did Wintec provide us with a clinical/ hospital environment with beds, tables, sinks, equipment trollies etc, but they also provided us with manikins and rubber models to practice our midwifery skills. I have found that the theory and practical aspects have played a huge part in helping me prepare for my career as a midwife. Discussions and interactions with fellow midwifery students and tutors have also assisted in my learning and preparation for my career. 13 LEARNING ON THE JOB You ll have the opportunity to follow women through their pregnancy, labour, birth and postnatal care. In your first year, you spend 16 weeks in clinical placements at birth centres, hospitals and various community agencies working under the supervision of a registered midwife. In your second year, your time in clinical placements is 30 weeks. In your third year, you will spend just 4 weeks in class and the rest of the year on the job training, working alongside registered midwives. 14 THE WORLD OF OCCUPATIONAL THERAPY My experience at Wintec and the School of Occupational Therapy has been life changing to say the least. The skills I have honed, friendships I have developed and opportunities that I have been presented with, have left me with an everlasting passion and hunger to make a difference to the lives of the individuals who need it most. The lecturers experience, passion and enthusiasm for the profession is contagious. Being one of the lecturers at the School of Occupational Therapy, Otago Polytechnic based at Wintec is a privilege; I m part of a team facilitating students professional growth and learning. 16 PROGRAMMES BACHELOR OF OCCUPATIONAL THERAPY Duration: Starts February for three years Study: Full-time Location: Hamilton City Campus and Rotokauri Campus If you want to become an occupational therapist who assesses and treats people who, because of illness, injury or circumstance, are limited in their ability to undertake daily activities, then this programme is right for you. Every day you ll help people to enhance their quality of life. You must demonstrate an elementary understanding of occupational therapy practice in New Zealand. You must provide a First Aid Certificate and a health declaration. You must submit recommendations of suitability from two referees who are not family members or friends. International students will be individually assessed to ensure they meet degree-level entry requirements. If English is not your first language, you must also demonstrate English language skills equivalent to an IELTS overall band score (academic) of 7.0, with no band score less than 6.5. This is an Otago Polytechnic programme offered right here in the Waikato at Wintec. LEARN FROM THE BEST You will study theory with leading clinical tutors here at Wintec and then put the skills you learn into practice on regular fieldwork placements. Your placements will incorporate a comprehensive range of clinical experiences supervised by health care practitioners. RECOGNISED QUALIFICATION Your qualification leads to registration to practise as an occupational therapist in New Zealand and is recognised by the World Federation of Occupational Therapists. The programme provides in-depth knowledge and skills relating to social work practices in contemporary Aotearoa New Zealand. This four year programme will give you the knowledge base, skills, and attributes required for practice in a variety of social work fields such as schools, hospitals, community groups or government organisations. HOW YOU LL STUDY The Bachelor of Social Work is a 4-year, 480-credit bachelor level qualification. You will have the opportunity of interacting with service users and service providers in the first year and in the second year you will have an opportunity to be engaged in voluntary work with a variety of agencies, service providers, organisations. This will give you the ability to link theory to practice and start building your professional identity as a student social worker. In years 3 and 4 you will be doing a placement in a social service agency which will help develop your social work practice and skills. There are 16 compulsory modules comprising 450 credits, two placements and two 15-credit electives. Graduates will be able to enter the social work workforce at a beginning practitioner level. WORKPLACE LEARNING This is an applied programme with practice at the centre. In Year One you will be introduced to service users in the classroom.
