A wide vriety of pproches bsed on both Western nd Non- Western cultures re integrted into courses tht re oriented towrd cretivity, imgintion nd criticl thinking. Students re ble to explore rt through courses in rt eduction, rt history, cermics, electronic rt, metlsmithing/jewelry, new medi, pinting, printmking, photogrphy, nd sculpture. The Deprtment s undergrdute progrm offers courses in three generl res, two of which my be tken s concentrtions within the Art mjor (Art History nd Art Studio), while the third prepres students to pursue teching credentil (Art Eduction, vrition of the Art Studio concentrtion). Note: Courses pplied to the minors must be completed with grde of C or higher. Grdute Progrm The Mster of Arts progrm is designed to produce grdutes with professionl competence in studio disciplines. While cquiring those bilities, the student is lso expected to develop skills used in the criticism nd nlysis of the visul rts. The studio curriculum encourges integrtion of professionl prctice with historicl nd theoreticl studies. The progression of clsses fcilittes the trnsition from student to independent rtist through studies in cermics, drwing, jewelry, metlsmithing, new medi, pinting, photogrphy, printmking, nd sculpture. Specil emphsis is plced on the development of individulity, depth, nd professionl competence in both technique nd concepts. Admission Requirements Admission s clssified grdute student in rt requires: BA in Art or its equivlent, including 12 units in rt history; minimum 2.5 GPA in the lst 60 units ttempted; pprovl by Studio Art fculty review of other submitted mterils (see Admission Procedures below); nd English lnguge proficiency: Interntionl students must pss the TOEFL exmintion. Admission Procedures Students should submit ll ppliction mterils by April 1st to be dmitted for the following fll. All prospective grdute students, including Scrmento Stte grdutes, must file the following with the Office of Grdute Studies, River Front Center 206, (916) : n online ppliction for dmission; nd officil trnscripts from ll colleges nd universities ttended, other thn Scrmento Stte. In ddition, ll mterils listed below must be submitted to the Art Deprtment by the bove dedlines: the Art Deprtment ppliction form; officil trnscripts of ll college work other thn Scrmento Stte; nd twenty slides of the pplicnt s recent rtwork in crrousel try ( description of ech slide, listing size, medium, nd dte of composition, must be included). Advncement to Cndidcy Ech student must file n ppliction for Advncement to Cndidcy, indicting proposed progrm of grdute study. This procedure should begin s soon s the clssified grdute student hs: removed ny deficiencies in dmission requirements; completed t lest 12 units of 200-level courses in the grdute progrm with minimum 3.0 GPA; pssed the Writing Proficiency Exmintion (WPE) or secured pprovl for WPE wiver; nd secured pprovl from the studio rt fculty, bsed on forml presenttion of the student s work.
