In 197, the government creted the Philippine Center for Economic Development (PCED), corporte body which helps provide finncil support to the reserch, teching, trining, nd other progrms of the School. In 1999, the University of the Philippines School of Economics ws designted the sole Center of Excellence in Economics in the Philippines. The School is the only institution in the country with n ctive interntionlly recognized PhD progrm in economics, n ll-phd full time fculty nd ntionlly unprlleled record of interntionl publictions in the discipline. PROGRAMS OFFERED UNDERGRADUATE PROGRAMS The School, through the Deprtment of Economics, provides instruction leding to the degree of Bchelor of Science in Economics (BS Econ) nd Bchelor of Science in Business Economics (BSBE). The BS Econ curriculum llows thirty (0) units of free electives, which permit student to hve secondry re of interest. The BSBE curriculum llows fifteen (15) units of free electives. GRADUATE PROGRAMS The School offers the degrees of Mster in Development Economics, Mster of Arts (Economics) nd Doctor of Philosophy (Economics). ADMISSION POLICIES AND REQUIREMENTS UNDERGRADUATE Freshmn students re dmitted directly to the School through the UP College Admission Test. Students from other units of the University my lso be considered for dmission if the following conditions re met: 1) The pplicnt must hve weighted verge of 2.25 or better in ll cdemic courses tken in the University. Additionlly, when n pplicnt hs lredy tken one or more economics courses, he/she must hve weighted verge of 2.25 or better in economics. 2) Incoming sophomores must hve completed Mth 17 nd Econ 11; Incoming juniors must hve completed Mth 17, Econ 11, Econ 101, Econ 102, Accounting I, nd Mth 100. ) Admission shll be subject to the quot of the School. ) Applictions for dmission, which re considered only t the beginning of the school yer, must be submitted to the Secretry s Office not lter thn thirty (0) clendr dys fter the lst dy of clsses of the second semester of the preceding school yer, or by the nnounced dedline, whichever is erlier. Any updtes regrding dmission requirements will be posted on the School website. Scholstic Delinquency Rules 1) A student must hve: () cumultive weighted verge of not lower thn 2.50 in ll grdes received in courses in his/her curriculum; nd (b) cumultive weighted verge of not lower thn 2.50 in economics courses, excluding Econ 11 t the end of his/her Junior Yer or the summer term of it, otherwise he/she is dismissed from the School. 2) A student must obtin t the end of every semester or summer () cumultive weighted verge of not lower thn 2.50 in ll

Probtion my be removed by stisfying requirements (), (b), nd (c) t the end of the semester or summer the student ws on probtion. ) Any student who fils to stisfy requirements (), (b), nd (c) t the end of the semester or summer he/she ws put on probtion will be dismissed from the School. ) A student must pss Econ 106 nd Econ 11 within four () semesters from first enrolling in either Econ 101 or Econ 102, inclusive of the semester of first enrollment in either subject; otherwise he/she is dismissed from the School. 5) A cumultive weighted verge of not lower thn 2.50 for ll grdes received in courses in his/her curriculum nd in ll economics courses excluding Econ 11 is requirement for grdution. These revised rules re pplicble beginning with the incoming freshmen students of the Acdemic Yer GRADUATE PROGRAMS In ddition to the rules nd regultions of the University governing grdute progrms, the following pply to the progrms of the School. Degree Requirements To be wrded the MDE, student must pss eight (8) core courses (DE 201, 202, 206, 21, 251, 25, 291, nd 292) nd obtin weighted verge of 2.00 or better in progrm of studies pproved by the Deprtment. To qulify for grdution, student must mintin grde verge of 2.00 or better. A student my choose from either of two trcks. The thesis trck consists of twenty-four units of forml course work nd mster s thesis of six (6) units. Acceptnce of the thesis is bsed on the recommendtion of the dviser nd endorsement of the reder. The non-thesis trck consists of thirty (0) units of course work, comprehensive exmintion, nd reserch seminr course (Econ 299) in which pper is required. In ddition, the student must pss the Mster s Comprehensive Exmintion, which consists of exmintions in the fields of economic nlysis (mcroeconomics, nd microeconomics) nd development economics. The exmintion is pssed or filed s whole. Students who fil the exmintion my retke it only once. Grde Requirements A cumultive weighted verge of 2.00 or better must be mintined t the end of every cdemic yer for student to remin in good stnding. Filure to meet this requirement for two cdemic yers will disqulify the student from the progrm. In ddition, student should ern grde of 2.50 or better in ech course. To qulify for grdution, student must obtin generl weighted verge of 2.00 or better in progrm pproved by the Deprtment. Mster in Development Economics Progrm The Mster in Development Economics (MDE) progrm gives priority in dmission to middle-level technicl nd professionl personnel from ll the brnches of government service whose present or future work involves development plnning, policy nlysis, pplied economic reserch, or project development. While those who re officilly nominted by their gencies re given preference, the progrm is lso open to other qulified pplicnts from the privte sector. Admission Requirements The pplicnt to the progrm should: 1) possess t lest four-yer bchelor s degree supported by strong undergrdute record; 2) hve minimum of two yers experience in work relted to development plnning, policy nlysis, pplied economic reserch, or project development; ) show resonble verbl nd quntittive proficiency s reflected in required dmissions test; nd ) for government gency nominees, hve regulr ppointment or be in line for such regulr ppointment. A grdute dmissions committee dministers the ptitude nd chievement test, interviews the pplicnts, nd selects the successful nominees. It is not necessry to hve hd economics s n undergrdute mjor if the student s cdemic record is outstnding. Applicnts to the progrm, whether undergrdute economics mjors or not, re expected to be fmilir with bsic clculus t the level of Mth 100, nd sttistics t the level of Stt 101. Applicnts my be interviewed by fculty members for the purpose of determining their preprtion for grdute work. An pplicnt my be dvised or required to ttend summer progrm preprtory to the grdute progrm. The Mster s Qulifying Exmintion, to be given t the end of the second semester, consists of four-hour test in economic theory nd nother two-hour test in quntittive methods. Completion of t lest twenty-four units of course work is requirement for tking the exmintion. Student who fil the exmintion my retke it only once. The Mster s Comprehensive Exmintion is test in n re of concentrtion chosen by the student. It my be tken by student only fter completing the course work nd obtining cumultive weighted verge of 2.00 or better. This exmintion is required only of students under the non-thesis trck. Grde Requirements University rules require student to mintin cumultive weighted verge of 2.00 in ech cdemic yer to remin in good stnding. Filure to stisfy this grde requirement for two cdemic yers will disqulify the student from the progrm. To successfully complete the progrm, student should ern grde of 2.50 (equivlent to stisfctory ) or better in ech course, nd weighted verge of 2.00 or better for the courses required in his study progrm. Doctorl Progrm Admission to the PhD progrm would normlly require the pplicnt to hve completed the twenty-four units of course work in the M.A. (Econ) progrm with weighted verge grde of 1.5 or better. In ddition to previous cdemic performnce, dmission will lso depend on n evlution of the student s bility to undertke the second yer of course work of the PhD progrm, to pss the comprehensive exmintion, nd to produce n cceptble disserttion. A student whose record is indequte for the doctorl level is required to complete ll requirements for the MA (Econ) degree before he/she cn be considered for dmission to the PhD progrm. In exceptionl cses, highly qulified person who holds mster s degree in economics from nother institution my be dmitted directly to the PhD progrm. In this event, he/she my be wrded credits of t most eighteen (18) units towrd the unit requirements of the PhD degree. Degree Requirements In order to qulify for the PhD degree, student must successfully complete forty-eight (8) units of forml course work, pss comprehensive exmintion with grde tht dvnces him to cndidcy, nd write disserttion. Grde Requirements Under University rules, student must mintin cumultive weighted verge of 1.75 t the end of ech cdemic yer to remin in good stnding. Filure to stisfy this grde requirement will result in student s disqulifiction from the progrm. To successfully complete the progrm, grde of 2.50 or better must be erned in ech course towrds n overll weighted verge of 1.75 or better. SCHOLARSHIPS UPSE offers scholrships for both undergrdute nd grdute students. The scholrships re vilble on competitive bsis nd provide monthly stipend, tuition, nd other llownces. UPSE scholrships for grdute students include: the Helth Policy Development Progrm Fellowship, the Ayl Corportion-UPSE Fellowship Grnt, Progrm in Finncil Economics Scholrship, Grdute Trust Fund Disserttion Fellowship, nd the PCED Fellowship.
