2 ΤHE CONFERENCE PALLADIAN CONFERENCES is organizing : Rebuilding Ηealth in Greece which shall take place on Tuesday, 24 June at Ethinki Asfalistiki Conference Center. THE CONFERENCE S objective is to put the current burning healthcare issues of our country under the microscope. Health journalist Michalis Kefalogiannis is the conference s coordinator and moderator of the thematic panel discussions; through an innovative presentation he will highlight issues regarding the future of the Greek healthcare system, the prospects of Greek and multinational pharmaceutical companies, drug policies and how innovation can become a leverage for economic growth. : Rebuilding Health in Greece aims at becoming a compass for the planning of healthcare policies. Our guests are of international repute and will develop clear and frank suggestions in an effort to help, the Greek private and public health sectors in Greece, find an exit from the deadlock. Presentations by distinguished scientists from Greece and abroad through interactive procedures and not monologues- highlight the rapid changes in the healthcare sector occurring in Greece, but also all over Europe, over the recent years. The conference aims to create a think tank of suggestions, by public and private sector executives, building thus the foundations for further improvements in the healthcare system that will have a positive impact to patients and entrepreneurship. Key issues include: the day after for the healthcare sector following recession, innovation and how it may constitute a unique opportunity for growth, and new developments in the pharmaceutical sector after the expenditure compression. The conference will focus on opportunities and challenges in healthcare, providers of technology and services and the healthrelated industry. 2

3 TOPICS PANEL #1 HEALTH IN CRISIS: A GREAT OPPORTUNITY FOR REFORMS The financial crisis brought the Greek National Health System to the edge. Constant cutbacks imposed by the bailout package lead to a dramatic reduction of healthcare expenditure. This paved the way for system restructuring. Can a uniform primary healthcare agency, as already designed, cater the needs of the social security beneficiaries, streamline spending and cooperate with the domestic private healthcare sector? PANEL #2 REBUILDING THE NATIONAL HEALTHCARE SYSTEM: AN EXPERIMENT OR AN ACTUAL REFORM? Since the beginning of the year, the social security beneficiaries saw their lives change, while the Ministry of Health estimates that this reform will last for 3 years, minimum. The question is whether the changes decided upon shall result to a modern, high-performance, functional healthcare system that will be comparable to successful European ones. PANEL #3 MEDICINES POLICY: THE PRICE PATIENTS PAY & ENTREPRENEURSHIP The largest pressure for savings was imposed on the pharmaceuticals sector. Constant budget cuts on drugs and the need to control spending lead to price reductions that tested the endurance of the pharmaceutical companies operating in Greece. It s still left to be seen if, in the long-run, this policy benefits social security beneficiaries who presently face difficulties in accessing innovative drugs. PANEL #4 INNOVATION: MEDICAL RESEARCH AND TECHNOLOGY, THE MOST IMPORTANT GROWTH ENGINES The pharmaceutical industry s greatest challenge: to become a front-runner in terms of competiveness through research and innovation.
