EXECUTIVE SEARCH PROFILE VICE PRESIDENT FOR ENROLLMENT MANAGEMENT
THE OPPORTUNITY The Vice President for Enrollment Management will lead the Division of Enrollment Management that includes Recruitment, Retention and Student Life to move Elmira College to its next level of success. THE COLLEGE Overview Elmira College is a private, four-year, co-educational, primarily residential, liberal arts institution that emphasizes both liberal arts and professional education. By combining a classical liberal arts curriculum with a variety of professional and pre-professional programs, academic life at Elmira College develops the intellect of its students while preparing them for the world beyond. The unique combination of academic programs and extracurricular opportunities offered at Elmira open students to a set of dynamic and enriching educational possibilities. Elmira is in the Southern Tier of New York in the beautiful Finger Lakes region of the state, approximately 40 miles west of Binghamton, NY and 90 miles northwest of Scranton, PA. In addition, the Elmira-Corning Regional Airport is 10 miles from campus. 2
THE COLLEGE Overview (continued) Elmira s campus, located on 55 beautiful acres, is one of the most attractive in the Northeast and a great source of pride for the College community. It is home to nine academic buildings, including the College s first building, Cowles Hall, which was built in 1855, extensively renovated in the last five years and is in process of being transformed into an advanced Health Sciences Center. In addition, there are eight residence halls, including the newest building on campus, Meier Hall, as well as Gannett-Tripp Library, the Mark Twain Study, Speidel Gymnasium and many other buildings. Eight of Elmira s buildings are on the National Register of Historic Places. The College has received recognition in a variety of publications and organizations. U.S. News & World Report ranked Elmira ninth Best Regional College-North in its 2014 America s Best Colleges. Elmira was also ranked fifth in its classification in its Great Colleges, Great Prices special section of the edition. Finally, Victory Media named Elmira College to its 2014 Military Friendly Schools list, which honors the top 20% of institutions in the country that are doing the most to embrace America s military service members, veterans, and spouses as students and ensure their success on campus. 3
THE COLLEGE History & Tradition Elmira College, founded in 1855, was the first institution of higher learning in the world to award baccalaureate degrees to women equal in rigor to the best men s colleges of the time. As a result, in most histories of higher education the College is characterized as the mother of women s colleges. Elmira became coeducational in 1969 and has long been recognized for the quality and forward thinking of its academic and student life. In 1870, Samuel Clemens (Mark Twain) married Olivia Langdon, the daughter of a member of Elmira s Board of Trustees, in the Langdons home in Elmira. The couple would summer at nearby Quarry Farm, where Twain wrote some of his most famous works, including The Adventures of Tom Sawyer, Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, and A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur s Court. In 1982, the Langdon family donated Quarry Farm and its buildings to the College. As a result, Elmira is home to The Center for Mark Twain Studies, one of only two in the world. The Center serves the Elmira College community and regional, national, and international students and scholars of Mark Twain. The Elmira College experience is firmly anchored in traditions that form an enduring connection between students and alumni. Each new class takes its place in Elmira s storied history by participating in traditional events including Mountain Day, Holiday Banquet, and Candlelight. 4
THE COLLEGE (continued) Academics & Student Life With a total enrollment of approximately 1,500, student to teacher ratio of 11:1, and average class size of 16, an education at Elmira goes beyond training and knowledge. It focuses on the whole person. With approximately 35 majors and minors, Elmira awards Associate s degrees, Baccalaureate degrees in diverse fields, and Master s degrees in Management and in Education. In addition, there are several new programs that will be introduced in September 2014, including Finance and Special Education, as well as the expansion of the BSN program. The College was awarded a chapter of Phi Beta Kappa in 1940, making it one of only 280 institutions in the United States to have a charter from the prestigious honor society. Elmira is fully accredited by the Middle States Commission on Higher Education. Through Elmira s Freshman Core offerings, Freshman Writing Program, General Degree Requirements, Encore credits, required Community Service component, Term III and Study Abroad opportunities, students are exposed to a broad variety of subject areas, offering them the chance to truly consider their vocation in life. Through these offerings, they have many opportunities to go even deeper: each program offers a number of research, authorship, internship, and travel opportunities. Participation in these types of opportunities prepares Elmira s students for a clear transition into professional life. 5
THE COLLEGE Academics & Student Life (continued) One of the unique features of Elmira College is our special six-week third term in April and May. The College offers many special learning opportunities in Term III, allowing students to do immersive and intensive work in a number of different fields. Education students can do student teaching. Nursing students have the opportunity for clinical work. Many students elect to travel internationally for the term. In fact, Elmira College classes go to as many as nine different countries each year. In athletics, the NCAA Division III Soaring Eagles are members of the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC), ECAC West Hockey, Empire 8 and United Volleyball Conference. They sponsor eight varsity men s sports, with Baseball beginning to compete in 2014, and eleven women s sports, with Cross Country premiering in the fall of The women s Ice Hockey team is the reigning Division III national champion. This was the team s third national title since PRESIDENTIAL LEADERSHIP Dr. Ronald Champagne became Elmira s thirteenth president on July 1, Prior to his appointment at Elmira, he was the president of Saint Xavier University for 12 years, as well as subsequent successful presidential appointments at Roger Williams University, Merrimack College, and Shimer College. President Champagne holds a Bachelor s degree from Duquesne University; Master s degrees from Fordham University and Catholic University of America; and a Ph.D. from Fordham in the foundations of Mathematics and Physics. Since his arrival at Elmira, President Champagne has led an inclusive, College-wide strategic visioning process; undertaken several capital improvements; and worked in close collaboration with the faculty in the development of several new academic programs, including Finance and Special Education.
