Lewis promotes the development of the complete person through the pursuit of wisdom and justice. Fundamental to its mission is a spirit of Association, which fosters community in all teaching, learning and service. History Founded in 1932 under the direction of the Chicago Archdiocese, the institution began as the Holy Name Technical School, a boys school with 15 students. From the beginning, Frank J. Lewis, a Chicago philanthropist and industrialist, assisted with the funding of various buildings that became the nucleus of the University. Aviation technology courses were selected as the special emphasis of instruction, becoming the origin of today s highly regarded Department of Aviation and Transportation Studies. By 1940, the newly titled Lewis School of Aeronautics began emphasizing programs of direct utility to the armed forces and, two years later, the campus was given over to the U.S. Navy for its flight instructors program. When regular classes resumed, a reorganization of the school included the addition of a junior college that evolved into a traditional arts and sciences curriculum. In 1949, women were admitted as students. The then-named Lewis College of Science and Technology granted its first baccalaureate degrees in In 1960, the Most Reverend Martin D. McNamara, Bishop of Joliet, invited the Brothers of the Christian Schools to assume direction of the institution. A congregation devoted exclusively to teaching, the De La Salle Christian Brothers brought to Lewis a new tradition of Lasallian values, based on the teachings of Saint John Baptist de La Salle, their founder and Patron Saint of Educators. The combined efforts of the lay faculty and the first group of Lasallian brothers on campus inaugurated a program of major improvements that led to the institution to become Lewis University in The Christian Brothers remain a substantive and visible presence on campus, with approximately 20 engaged as faculty, staff or administrators. 3
