1 Higher Education in Cumberland County Cumberland County is home to a wide range of educational, vocational and business training schools. Our county can proudly say that it offers unique educational opportunities at all postsecondary education levels, both public and private. Its three quality colleges are safe, accessible, affordable, and flexible. Just a few of the county s claims to fame at the collegiate level include the fact that Cumberland County: 1. Is the most geographically diverse population in the state as a result of its enrollment of active duty military; 2. has three colleges that are no more than twenty minutes from each other or Ft. Bragg: Fayetteville State University, Methodist University and Fayetteville Technical Community College. 3. Offers Army and Air Force ROTC programs; 4. Has academic programs that are nationally and internationally accredited; 5. Is the home of Miss North Carolina 2005; 6. Has championship collegiate teams at the NCAA Division II and III levels; 7. Offers an early college high school program; 8. Offers face-to-face, interactive video, and online programs at all of its main campus sites as well as at Ft. Bragg and Pope AFB; 9. At the two-year level, Fayetteville Technical Community College (FTCC) offers 116 majors or concentrations with state of the art laboratories and technology and offers classes at three sites within the county as well as over 700 courses on the Internet via Distance Learning. Its open door admission policy assures that it is a college for all people. Over 30,000 students are enrolled at FTCC. FTCC s Success Center in the Virtual College Center also provides free individualized instructional assistance. 10. At the four-year level and above, both public and private education are offered. a. Fayetteville State University (FSU) is the only constituent institution of the University of North Carolina system in the county. FSU enrolls over 6,000 students and offers 43 undergraduate degrees, 23 graduate degrees, a doctorate in educational leadership, state-of-the-art accredited Nursing (NLNAC), Business (AACSB International), and Social Work (CSWE) programs. Its most recent offerings include a Bachelor s degree in Forensic Science as well as Biotechnology. It also offers a Master s degree in Criminal Justice. FSU is one of just a few in the state to host an early college high school program on its
2 campus. Its distance learning programs include interactive video technology and over 100 online classes. Athletically, FSU s Bronco football team won two bask to back CIAA conference championships in 2002 and Overall, FSU has won 22 championships in football, basketball, golf, volleyball, tennis, bowling and softball. b. As the only private college in the county, Methodist University (MU) has over 70 majors and almost 2,200 students from 44 states and 31 countries. It has one of just four Physician Assistant programs in NC and just one of 128 nationally. MU s MBA program has a concentration in Golf, Tennis, and the Resort Industry, the only known program of its kind in the country. Nationally accredited undergraduate programs include Business, Education, Athletic Training, and Social Work. Its Master s degree in Justice Administration is the only weekend program of its kind in NC. Athletically, in less than 50 years of athletic competition, the Monarchs have won 57 national championships and 116 conference championships while producing 286 All-Americans and 51 Academic All-Americans FAYETTEVILLE TECHNICAL COMMUNITY COLLEGE 2201 Hull Road Fayetteville, NC Fayetteville, North Carolina, is home to three comprehensive educational institutions: Fayetteville Technical Community College, one of the largest community colleges in the state and the largest college in the area with over 10,000 curriculum and 23,000 continuing education students; Fayetteville State University, a public institution with a residential campus with approximately 5,000 degree-seeking undergrads and a strong graduate program; and Methodist University, a private university with a residential campus with approximately 2,000 degreeseeking undergrads and a strong graduate program. Together these diverse educational institutions offer a total of over 200 curriculum programs and hundreds of continuing education classes annually. They offer multiple opportunities for diverse educational pathways from attaining a college degree to sharpening skills for a career, seeking classes with an avocation in mind, or earning college credit while still in high school. Serves more VETERANS than any college/university in North Carolina Methodist University 5400 Ramsey Street Fayetteville, North Carolina (910) / Methodist College was chartered November 1, 1956 as a senior, coeducational liberal arts
4 college. It was established as a joint venture by the citizens of Fayetteville/Cumberland County and the North Carolina Conference of the United Methodist Church. The college opened to students in the fall of In March 1986 Methodist College established the Charles M. Reeves School of Business to honor a Sanford, North Carolina businessman, trustee, and benefactor. The Reeves School of Business established a concentration in Professional Golf Management in 1987 (one of the few in the nation) and a similar program in Professional Tennis Management the following year. In fall 2004, Methodist added a second master's program, a master of business administration with a concentration in leisure studies. The 2005 enrollment was 2,349 students. In February 2004, the Elisabeth and David R. Nimocks Jr. family pledged $1 million to Methodist College to help build a $3.5 million campus fitness and intramural center. On November 1, 2006, Dr. Hendricks announced that by a unanimous vote of the trustees, the College would change its name to Methodist University. Graduate Programs Methodist University has 3 graduate programs. The Physician Assistant Program is one of just 4 in NC and one of just 128 nationally. The pass rate on the national boards (98.4%) is the highest in NC and among the highest in the country (national average is 90%). The Methodist University MBA program is one with a unique concentration preparing students for careers in the Golf, Tennis and Resort industry and is the only known program of its kind in the country. The MJA (Justice Administration) program is the only weekend Justice Administration program in NC Undergraduate Programs Methodist University has over 70 majors and concentrations and 32 minors Strong/Unique programs: The Reeves School of Business is nationally accredited and has undergraduate degrees in Accounting, Business Administration, Finance/Economics and Marketing. Concentrations in Professional Golf Management, Professional Tennis Management, Resort Management, Sports Management and Health Care Administration allow students to specialize. The Education program at Methodist University is nationally accredited and has programs in Art Education, Music Education, Special Education, Elementary Education, Middle Grades Education, Secondary Education and Physical Education. Methodist University has a nationally accredited Athletic Training program. Methodist University has a nationally accredited Bachelor of Social Work Program.
5 Methodist University has a Forensic Science concentration within the Chemistry department and an Applied Forensic Science concentration within the Justice Studies department. Methodist University has a degree in Occupational Environmental Management. Methodist University has unique minors in Leadership Studies, Paralegal Studies, Real Estate, Coaching, Cardiac Rehabilitation, Gerontology and Women's Studies. Methodist University has both Army and Air Force ROTC programs available (partnering with Campbell & FSU). Diversity of Program delivery Methodist University currently has day classes, evening classes and weekend classes on campus in addition to online courses. Job Placement and Development - Of the Methodist University graduates who completed the Career Services survey, 153 (66%) indicated that they had secured full-time employment or continuing education prior to graduation. Fayetteville State University 1200 Murchison Road Fayetteville, NC Fayetteville State University is a constituent institution of The University of North Carolina and the second-oldest public institution of higher education in the state. Founded in 1867 as the Howard School for the education of African Americans, today FSU serves a growing student body of over 5,300 and ranks among the nation's most diverse campus communities. The university boasts a faculty-to-student ratio of 1-to-20 and the FSU faculty puts teaching first. Out of 778 graduates 689 received bachelor's, 82- master's and 7 doctor's degree.
