2 2 Salary Guide Singapore 2015 Salary Guide Singapore The speed of growth is impressive in Asia, which is seeing increasing demand for highly skilled workers. The rise in the number of redundancies suggests that there is a demand of matching targeted skillsets to specialised job scopes, as employers are aware of the limited talent pool in some areas and are actively looking for the best talent for the right job. Furthermore, the expectations on both monetary and job title progression are very high among workers in Singapore. This reflects the need for employers to be increasingly creative in their salary packages - offering attractive remuneration, flexibility and training to capture the best candidates. Welcome Note from Femke Hellemons, Country, Adecco Singapore Welcome to the 2015 Adecco Salary Guide, Singapore a comprehensive overview of updated salary information, job descriptions and trends across key sectors and industries. The salary information and commentary included in this guide have been researched by Adecco experts who liaise with clients and candidates every day of the week. Their expert comments and opinions are based on their extensive experience in recruitment and human resources. Throughout the year, Adecco will continue to provide salary updates and to ensure that you always have the information that you need at your fingertips. In 2014, the Singapore labour market remained tight, as we saw companies grappling with rising wage costs while looking at more cost effective ways to handle their workforce. At the same time, unemployment throughout last year remained low and steady, hovering around 2%, reflecting strong manpower demand as job seekers in many sectors continued to have multiple career options open to them, along with bargaining power relating to salary and compensation packages. The continuing tight labour market means that most companies will likely continue to face fierce competition in securing talent. We expect hiring opportunities in high-margin activities, particularly in manufacturing sectors such as Electronics, Engineering, as well as the Information Communications and Medical and Science sectors. Even though employment remains largely unchanged, the services sector remains the largest sector as it generated the majority of employment gains in The wholesale and retail trade followed by business services are Singapore s biggest employers. As in 2014, we are seeing organisations compete to attract and retain the very best talent. Human Resources professionals within companies and organisations arguably have a more important role than ever before as they endeavour to ensure that their business leaders have the strongest teams in place. This guide covers many specific job titles across various industry sectors. However, if you are looking for salary data that may not be covered, then please do connect with your Adecco contact who will be pleased to support you. I personally hope that this 2015 Salary Guide from Adecco Singapore, will be of great benefit to you and your colleagues.

5 8 Salary Guide Singapore 2015 Salary Guide Singapore FROM A TALENT PERSPECTIVE Overview Economic Growth in Singapore (%) Unemployment & Long Term Unemployment Rate ( ) (%) Lab ur Market Update Consumer Price Inflation P^ 2015 F * While it is projected that Singapore s economy should expand by 4.9% per year on average between 2015 and 2019, in 2014 GDP decreased to 3.0%, a drop from 3.9% in Despite this dip, or perhaps because of the optimistic overall projection, the labour market in Singapore remained tight, which, in turn, helped to drive up wages. Its position as a regional hub makes Singapore a desirable place to find employment. The strong public-private healthcare system and favourable business environments create a strong draw factor, however, only one third of employees in Singapore are highly engaged at work. The proportion of highly engaged employees in Singapore is lower than in the Asia Pacific region (39%) and globally (35%). Most Singaporeans lack an emotional connection to their companies. As a result, employers face a very real fear of high turnover, as employees are likely to leave their current roles either for positions that have better career prospects, or because their companies lack career advancement opportunities, or simply because they are dissatisfied with the management, pay and benefits. In terms of overall employment growth, despite 3,800 workers being laid off, total employment is estimated to have increased by 129,000, lower than 136,200 in 2013 and similar to 129,000 in Employment growth among locals rose as Foreign employment growth continued to moderate. In December 2014, locals made up 66.7% of persons employed in Singapore. The total employment of Services (118,600) continued to dominate the majority of employment gains, followed by construction (14,500) and manufacturing (-4,600). Looking forward into 2015, some of the highest wage increases can be expected in sectors such as manufacturing and engineering sectors where talent is hard to find or specific skillsets are needed. These include sectors such as electronics, automotive, and especially Oil & Gas as Singapore is Asia s Oil , , ,100 OVERALL EMPLOYMENT GROWTH -5.4 % hub and one of the world s top three export refining centres. The biomedical and healthcare industry has been earmarked by Singapore s Economic Development Board as being a strategic sector and as a result will likely see more investments and thus, more job opportunities. An area that has been seeing continual evolution since the global financial crisis, the Banking and Finance industry as well as the business services industry continues to realign their operations in response to the changing demand for non-core business areas and services. Going into 2015, the sector may need to decide where their strengths lie, identify business areas they are not competitive in and trim headcounts accordingly. Singapore has also emerged as the world s second in the Global Talent Competitiveness Index which measures a country s competitiveness based on its ability to grow, attract and retain talent. Singapore s good balance in knowledge skills and professional, vocational skill make it an all-rounder in growing talent, with openness, targeted training, technological innovation and investment in education being essential to talent growth. The index combines the expertise of INSEAD and Singapore s Human Capital Leadership Institute (HCLI) with the business experience and perspective of Adecco. Private Consumption Unemployment Rate GDP F * 2017 F * 2016 F * 2015 F * 2014 P^ According to the Ministry of Trade & Industry, the Singapore labour market should remain tight in 2015, supporting private consumption growth. The economy could expand by 2% to 4% in 2015 and 5% in The industries which are likely to see the best wage increases SUPPLY CHAIN & LOGISTICS With Singapore s prime location of being the nexus of major shopping lanes in Southeast Asia, the surge of investments has seen a demand for professionals in logistics and world trade, leading to an expansive base of leading global logistics players and competitive wage increases. MANUFACTURING & ENGINEERING High-end manufacturing and engineering sectors like electronics, automotive, oil and gas. Singapore is the oil hub in Asia and is one of the world s top three export refining centres. The positions that Adecco has seen in most demand are clerical and administrative jobs, with the number of managers and administrators growing by 19% in With the current unemployment rate at 2%, there is an ongoing war for talent, as companies vie to attract the best talent by offering highly attractive compensation and benefits packages. Job seekers continue to expect competitive overall remuneration packages and are demanding on various other factors, including location, work-life balance as well as security and longevity of the organisation. Once again, Adecco finds that the administration and office support sector is showing itself to be partial towards the hiring of older workers. Taking a stance that is strongly inline with the Singapore government s initiative to have all companies appreciating this important demographic and implementing programmes that see the experience and skills of mature employees being put to good use. This sector has contributed strongly towards the employment rate of older residents rising to a record high of 65% 2. Unlike previous years, however, when new hires were taken on to fill roles that had been cut during the Global Financial Crisis, hiring in 2015 will be driven by the need to fill completely new roles created to accelerate companies growth plans. There continues to be strong demand for IT talent in the banking, high-tech and manufacturing sectors, but with the explosion of Big Data, there is a particular demand for individuals with IT Security and Cloud Computing experience. With the growth of Mobile Application Development for both IOS and Android platforms in Singapore, the country is rapidly becoming a hub for the industry and as a result, there is a growing demand for IOS/Android Developers. Some of the other roles Adecco saw high demand for include Cyber Security Analysts, Enterprise Architects, Digital/Big Data Specialists, Cloud Architect and Mobility Experts and Technology Sourcing s. The primary challenge for organisations in Singapore seeking to hire IT talent is the shortage of skilled-labour that exists. HR Departments in many organisations are now being challenged by the IT Department and end-users as to where talent can be found and how current IT employees can be retained. The difficulty of securing work permits and passes, thanks to the stricter policies of Singapore s government on hiring of foreign talent, also comes into this discussion. Organisations paying marginally below market rates will seriously need to review compensation and benefits if they are to attract and retain the talent needed for success.
