4 Executive Overview We are pleased to present the 2016 Kelly Singapore Salary Guide, a comprehensive reference tool which provides an insight to the latest salary ranges for various positions across industries in Singapore through a compilation of salaries and job titles recorded on the database of Kelly Services Singapore. While Singapore s economic outlook remains tepid for the next six to nine months, jobseekers can take comfort that despite slower growth, the country s unemployment rate remains healthy at 2.9% in The Republic experienced its slowest economic growth since 2009 with GDP growth decelerating from 2.9% in 2014 to 2.1% last year. Economic growth in the last quarter of 2015 was mixed, supported by public-sector activities and an expansion of the Services sector. Manufacturing slowed down by 4.8% for the whole of 2015, its worst performance since With most of Singapore s manufactured output exported, the weak industrial output reflects a global slowdown in trade. Services and Construction industries performed well as they grew 3.2% and 7% respectively last year. To attract the best talent, employers need to provide a competitive remuneration but also satisfy their employees other needs, to help them thrive professionally and personally. The latest Kelly Services survey, Work-Life Design, The New Balance, found that work-life balance is highly valued in the Asia-Pacific. 77% of workers cite it as an important consideration in deciding where to work. The Salary Guide, together with this report, can help companies design a holistic approach to attract and retain talent. Correspondingly, employees need to continue to upgrade their skills to remain relevant in the job marketplace. The SkillsFuture initiative launched this year will help students and workers gain skills and sharpen them throughout their careers. It will give two million Singaporeans aged 25 and above an initial S$500 credit for use on approved courses. We trust you find the 2016 Singapore Salary Guide useful. We are on hand to provide you current data and insights to the various key industries as well as support you in developing recruiting strategies and programs to suit your talent solutions management needs. Overall, employment of locals fell by 8,900 and the employment of foreigners continues to slow in The Singapore workforce continues to localise with various efforts and programmes by the Ministry of Manpower. Hence, demand for local talent will remain strong. Singapore s labour demand is expected to be resilient against uncertain external economic factors, even as many industries are expected to take a more conservative approach in hiring this year and include temporary and contract staffing to fulfil their manpower needs. 10 Banking and finance OVERVIEW Singapore continues to be a triple-a rated economy with over 700 financial institutes providing a wide array of financial services. Growth is expected to be low this year for Banking and Finance due to slower growth in China offset by a recovering US economy. The banks loan-to-deposit ratios are expected to remain stable at 90%. However, profitability is expected to decline as slower loan growth weigh on net interest margin. Offshoring of banks to cheaper locations will continue. Given the importance of Singapore s large banks to the overall economy and banking system, systemic support is strong. Under the Financial Sector and Innovation scheme, the Monetary Authority of Singapore has committed $225 million to grow Financial Technology (FinTech) in the Finance sector. 12 call centre OVERVIEW Rising demand for customer service is expected to drive Asia Pacific s Call Centre sector to grow over 8% this year. Much of the growth will be driven by domestic demand, especially from the Telecommunications and Banking and Finance sectors. However, the Call Centre sector in Singapore is already showing signs of saturation and on the mature end of the growth curve. Technological innovation and increase in customer service expectations will force local call centres to explore less labour intensive ways to enhance their services. While some centres are offshoring to other neighbouring countries, Singapore still remains the prime spot for centres which run regional operations. Hiring Outlook to remain STEADY Customer Service Sector expected to grow 8% in 2016 Call Centres in Singapore tend to focus on volume hiring to meet demands of expansion plans. With the tight and competitive job market, employers need to constantly review and enhance their incentive schemes and operation processes to retain a competitive edge. The Construction sector is also headed for a slowdown due to the weakening economy and Transport Engineering remains pessimistic as it continues to be weighed down by the marine and offshore cluster. Large public infrastructural projects remain a key support for the sector. Construction demand is expected to be sustained between $27 billion to $36 billion this year and into Singapore s Construction industry will see on-going demand for engineers with specific rail projects experience due to the expansion of MRT network. Though the number of engineering graduates has increased, companies may still face difficulties filling engineering positions as some graduates plan to embark on careers outside the discipline.
