5 Margaret Douglas, MPH, RN, FASHRM, CPHRM - Perinatal Safety Initiative: A Journey to Improvement Learn how utilizing best practices and process improvements in labor and delivery have resulted in dramatic improvements in safety and outcomes. Margaret joined Premier as Assistant Vice President for Risk Management in She consulted in risk management for AIG/Chartis, Florida Physicians Insurance Company, and the Reciprocal Group. During those tenures, she assisted clients in enhancing patient safety through risk assessments, risk reduction education, and other risk prevention activities. Those services were provided to hospitals, a variety of ambulatory services organizations, and physician groups. Margaret was Risk Manager in a 500-bed acute care hospital. She held a number of positions in clinical nursing including medical-surgical care, emergency department, obstetrics, coronary care, and nursing management. She also has experience in the quality management arena in the acute care setting for both hospital and physicians. Margaret is a graduate of the Greenville General Hospital School of Nursing in Greenville, SC, and subsequently obtained a Bachelor of Science in nursing degree (BSN) from the Medical University of South Carolina. She then went on to obtain a Master of Public Health degree (MPH) from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. She achieved the designation as Fellow in the American Society for Healthcare Risk Management (FASHRM) and earned the CPHRM designation. Tiffany Christiansen - "Partnering with Patients: A Bed's Eye View of Safety By embracing the four principles of patient and family centered care, participants will expand the possibilities of decreasing medical error and be inspired to implement new partnership techniques within their own practices Tiffany Christensen speaks from the perspective of a life-long patient and a professional patient advocate. Tiffany is a TeamSTEPPS Master Trainer, a Respecting Choices Advance Care Planning Instructor, an APPEAL certificate recipient, and the creator of her own Train the Trainer workshop series entitled "Finding Your Voice in the Healthcare Maze. She is a nationally recognized public speaker and the author of three books exploring advocacy, end of life planning and partnership strategies in healthcare. Tiffany is the Team Lead for Duke Healthcare's Patient Advisory Council expansion program and a board member of the Beryl Institute for improving the patient experience. Tiffany is also new faculty for the Institute for Healthcare Improvement in Cambridge, Mass. She currently is a patient advocate at Duke Hospital working primarily in the area of Oncology.

6 Karen Mathura, RN, JD, CPHRM & Lauren Bicknese, BBA - Telemedicine and International Telemedicine: Risks that May Ensue Understand the varieties of telemedicine, potential exposures and the unique challenges of telemedicine. Karen has over 13 years combined experience providing intensive care, trauma, open heart recovery room and emergency department nursing, litigating and defending medical malpractice and hospital negligence claims and providing claims and risk management support and consultation. In her current role, Ms. Mathura is a Claims & Risk Management Consultant in SISCO. She is responsible for managing liability claims and provides specific risk management advice to reduce potential exposure and risk for healthcare organizations. In addition, she works with Life Sciences and Pharmaceutical firms in providing risk management consulting services. She performs risk assessments and she further prepares and presents numerous educational and in-service programs. Ms. Mathura is an instrumental team member in assisting clients with claims resolution, risk management support and education. Prior to joining RCM&D, Ms. Mathura worked at litigation firms in both Chicago and New York, concentrating her practice in defending physicians and hospitals against claims of negligence. She also has specific experience in defending nursing homes as well as experience in general personal injury litigation. Ms. Mathura received her B.S. in Nursing with a minor in Psychology from Georgetown University in 1995 and her J.D. from the University of Baltimore School of Law in 1999 with a certificate in litigation advocacy. She received certification as a Certified Professional in Healthcare Risk Management ( CPHRM ) in She is admitted to the bars of Illinois, New York, the Northern District of Illinois and the United States District Court, Eastern District of New York and is licensed as a Registered Nurse. Lauren has insurance industry experience working with hospital systems, long-term care facilities, and physician practices on their insurance and risk management programs. She began her career as a professional and general liability claims intern, managing all facets of the claim handling process for self-insured organizations. She is currently a risk and claims coordinator at RCM&D/SISCO. She provides support to claims staff and risk management consultants, as well as assists with editing and authors departmental publications. She has experience with analyzing and trending loss data and benchmarking to assist with the implementation of risk reduction strategies. Lauren also works closely with healthcare clients on an IT risk management committee. She has extensive experience with industry wide research, as well as servicing clients specific research needs. Lauren lectured on Telemedicine and International Telemedicine at the 2013 ASHRM Conference and on telemedicine and cyber/privacy security at multiple healthcare institutions. She graduated Summa Cum Laude with a BBA in Finance from Loyola University Maryland, with a minor in Information Systems and is a member of ASHRM and MD-DC SHRM.

7 Donna Renfrow Rutala, BSN, JD and Michelle A. Greene, JD - N.C. Medical Malpractice Law Update Attendees will learn of recent North Carolina cases and law involving medical malpractice issues Donna practices in the areas of medical malpractice defense litigation and health law. In her work, Donna represents hospitals, physicians, and other health care providers in civil litigation as well as administrative proceedings. She also advises hospitals on health law and employment law issues. Donna has trial experience in both the federal and state courts of North Carolina and has appeared before various administrative tribunals including the North Carolina Board of Nursing, the North Carolina Board of Pharmacy, the Employment Security Commission, and the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission. Donna joined Young Moore and Henderson as a shareholder in 2007, after practicing a number of years with another law firm. While attending the evening law program at NCCU, Donna worked as a risk/claims manager for UNC Hospitals in Chapel Hill. While in that position, she was involved in analyzing, negotiating and resolving patient claims against the hospital system and provided education to hospital employees in the area of risk management. Donna s unique combination of experience in the health care setting enables her to provide an in-depth understanding of multiple problems faced by the health care industry. Donna has an AV Peer Review Rating from Martindale-Hubbell. Michelle practices general litigation with an emphasis on medical malpractice defense, trucking and transportation and nursing home/long term care litigation. Michelle joined Young Moore and Henderson as an associate in September 2010 after receiving her J.D. with honors from the University of North Carolina School of Law in May While in law school, Michelle served on the North Carolina Journal of International Law and Commercial Regulation as Publication Editor. Michelle earned a B.A. in Journalism and Mass Communication from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in May As a double Tar Heel, Michelle is an avid Carolina fan. She also enjoys traveling, reading and spending time with family and friends.

8 Joseph Zalkin - The New Housecall: Mobile Integrated Health Practice and Community Paramedic Services Learn about the challenges of the mobile integrated healthcare practice utilizing community paramedics to address patient compliance, evaluation and navigation. Joseph is a North Carolina native, who has been involved in the enhancement of emergency medical care for the past 38 years. As a proven leader and innovative problem solver, Joseph has used his relationship with providers, physicians and regulators to challenge the common ways and ask why not. Joseph possesses unique talents to integrate information, educational objectives and data services to help frame the needs and trends in NC Emergency Medical Services system. Notable accomplishments: Past President of the North Carolina Association of Paramedics, Co-author of several peer reviewed articles on resuscitation, emergency medical dispatch, falls in assisted living and 911 processing and he has presented at several national conferences with specialty topics in Crew Resource Management, Safety, Community Paramedicine and Customer Service. Christa Brown RN- Measures to EMTALA Success Understand the importance of a multidisciplinary team approach to implementing a compliant EMTALA program. With 18 year s nursing experience in emergency medicine, Christa is currently the AVP of Emergency Medicine/Trauma at Cleveland County Healthcare System in Shelby, North Carolina. Her responsibilities include clinical performance initiatives; financial management of the emergency departments; serves as a liaison between the department medical staff and hospital administration. In addition to supervising over 150 full-time employees, Christa led the organization in attaining Chest Pain Center Accreditation and in implementing ED Lean Performance Improvement Initiatives. Her department continually ranks as a high performing unit within the Carolinas HealthCare System when compared to similar units across North Carolina. Christa is a Registered Nurse; with qualifications as a Sexual Abuse Nurse Examiner, Trauma Nursing Core Course Instructor, Advanced Life Support Instructor, Advance Life Support Provider, Advanced Pediatric Life Support Provider and Basic Cardiac Life Support Provider. She is currently a member of the Emergency Nurses Association and the Honor Society of Nursing, Sigma Theta Tau International.

9 Lou Reida and Eva Carman - Transparency and Learning from Safety Events Learn how a regional healthcare system shares information about safety risks, safety events, and lessons learned from root cause analysis and implementation of risk reduction strategies across the health system Lou Reida is the Director of Patient Safety at Vidant Health. She has over 16 years nursing experience in clinical and leadership roles. The last six years have been focused on implementing a comprehensive patient safety program across the health system. She has a special interest in event analysis and human factors science. Lou was an AHA/NPSF Patient Safety Leadership Fellow, Class 11. She is an ECU Pirate and UNC Tar Heel, receiving nursing degrees from both universities. Eva is a Certified Professional in Health Care Risk Management and holds a Masters of Public Health. She has over 20 years experience in the healthcare Risk, Quality, Patient Safety arena from small community hospitals to an academic medical center setting. Professional associations include former President of the North Carolina Association of Healthcare Quality and current Board member of the NC ASHRM. Bryan Sexton, PhD - Surviving vs. Thriving During Times of Change: The Duke Resilience Minicourse Learn about the need to take care of ourselves in a stressful healthcare environment and participants will be given specific instructions and tools to improve their own resilience and well-being. Bryan is Associate Professor, Department of Psychiatry and Director of the Patient Safety Center at Duke University Health System. Dr. Sexton has captured the wisdom of frontline caregivers through rigorous assessments of safety culture and teamwork. His research instruments have been used in over 2500 hospitals in 20 countries. He has studied teamwork and safety practices in high-risk environments such as the commercial aviation cockpit, the operating room, and the intensive care unit, under funding from NASA, AHRQ, Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, Swiss National Science Foundation, and the Gottlieb Daimler and Karl Benz Foundation. Dr. Sexton specializes in organizational assessment, teamwork, survey development, and quantitative methods. He spends his time teaching, mentoring, conducting research, and finding practical ways of getting busy caregivers to do the right thing by making it the easy thing to do. He is an internationally known expert in patient safety and resilience.
