1 Please join us for the Iowa Association of Medical Staff Services 2014 Fall Educational Conference! Iowa Methodist Medical Center Thompson Auditorium Des Moines, Iowa Friday, September 19, 2014 AGENDA 8:00AM-8:30AM 8:30AM-8:45AM Registration and Continental Breakfast IAMSS Business Meeting Jodi Ridder, IAMSS President PROGRAM VICKI SEARCY, VICE PRESIDENT, VP CONSULTING SERVICES 8:45AM-10:00AM Best Practices in Credentialing: How to Speed Up the Initial Appointment Process Without Taking Risky Short-Cuts 10:00AM-10:15AM Break 10:15AM-12:00PM Design and Implementation of Effective Criteria-Based Privileges 12:00PM-1:00PM 1:00PM-1:15PM 1:15PM-2:00PM 2:00PM-2:15PM 2:15PM-3:00PM 3:00PM-3:15PM Lunch Door Prizes When/How to Privilege Residents and Fellows Break Frequently Asked Questions Wrap-up and Door Prizes
2 PROGRAM DESCRIPTION Best Practices in Credentialing: How to Speed Up the Initial Appointment Process Without Taking Risky Short-Cuts A dissection of the processes related to providing practitioners with application materials (the application, bylaws, etc.), including an evaluation of the potential benefits of the use of pre-application forms vs. an intended practice plan. A discussion of provision of materials electronically vs. paper is incorporated in this section. The session will also include an in-depth review of best verification practices as related to what must (vs. could or should) be verified via primary sources. Some of the questions to be addressed include: Must all hospital affiliations be verified? Who (i.e., CMS, the Joint Commission) requires verification of hospital affiliations? Must an organization always verify hospital affiliations that occurred since completion of Medical School? What happens when credentialing locum tenens practitioners or telemedicine practitioners who may have hundreds of affiliations? Should organizations always conduct criminal background checks at initial appointment? What about reappointment? Is it required that all malpractice history be verified with previous insurance carriers? How many peer recommendations/references are required? Are organizations limited to querying references provided by the applicant? How to obtain meaningful references. This session will clearly identify what items are required what accreditation or regulatory body requires them and additional items that may not be required, but are considered to be best practices. Design and Implementation of Effective Criteria-based Privileges This session will focus on how to develop an effective privileging methodology that meets accreditation requirements as well as providing the healthcare organization with an effective tool for managing practitioner competence. This session offers valuable information on contemporary privileging practices (such as core privileges, bundling, primary privileges, clusters, etc.). Areas of focus include, but are not limited to: Evaluating various methodologies for delineating privileges including the benefits and limitations of each method. Identification of methods for developing criteria for delineated privileges and obtaining physician consensus. Developing approaches to implementing an effective privileging program including optimizing the use of technology. Establishing a project plan to revamp current privileges. Best Practices in Credentialing: When/How to Privilege Residents and Fellows A discussion of issues related to privileging residents and fellows. It has been found that when residents and/or fellows do a rotation outside of the home base of their training program, the hospital where the rotation is done frequently conducts unnecessary credentialing, thus creating work that is redundant. This session will contrast the credentialing and privileging requirements of LIPs (licensed independent practitioners) vs. those residents and fellows who are functioning within an accredited program. Included will be advice on how to handle moonlighting residents/fellows.
