3 Worship & Music Ushers Act as host to all worshipers before and during worship services. Provide bulletins, direction to restrooms and nursery, access to accommodation supplies for those with sight and hearing challenges and impairments, and coordinate other services with the building coordinator as needed. Worship & Music Team Meets monthly. Designs comprehensive plan for worship on Sunday mornings and holy days. Trains lay leaders to lead worship effectively. Develops new ministry opportunities for members to share in worship leadership. Two year commitment. 4 Adult Learning & Fellowship BIBLE STUDIES Adult Forum Promotes open discussion, education, and Bible study on a variety of topics related to faith. Time: Wednesdays, 6:30 p.m. Contact: Pastor Lori Cornell Worship & Music Deeper Life Band Provides contemporary Christian music for the 11:15 a.m. Deeper Life worship service each Sunday, as well as select special services, coffee house, and church-wide events throughout the year. Requires strong commitment to providing quality, relevant, contemporary Christian music. Rehearses weekly. Greeters Provide warm welcome to everyone who joins us for worship. Identify newcomers, escort to ushers for introduction and invite them to participate in communion. Reader Reads the scripture lessons aloud during 9:00 a.m. worship service. Utilizes New Revised Standard Version (NRSV) of the Bible. 5 Choirs Bell Choir Provides sacred music through bells that inspire the worship of God. Commitment of 1-1/2 hours weekly for rehearsal and four hours one Sunday a month for the 9:00 a.m. worship service. Time: Location: Contact: Worship & Music Thursday, 6:00 p.m. Choir Loft Ryan Batcheller Calvary Vocal Choir (Vocal Choir) Provides vocal music that inspires the worship of God. Commitment of 1-1/2 hours weekly for rehearsals, performance in three 9:00 a.m. Sunday worship services each month, and special engagements. Adult Learning & Fellowship Men s Bible Study Weekly gathering of men to study specific books of the Bible, guided by the William Barclay Commentary series. Time: Thursdays, 8:00 a.m. Location: 1st Week Poverty Bay Café 2nd-5th Weeks Learning Center #2 Contact: Bill Johnson Advent & Lenten Studies Small groups meet seasonally to discuss the book selected as a focus for that season. 6 Children, Youth & Family Children, Youth & Family Team (CYFM) Focus on encouraging and equipping children, youth, and parents. Meets monthly to plan gatherings in which faith is taught, relationships are forged, and a life of faith is modeled. Time: 2nd Monday, 6:30 p.m. Location: Social Hall Confirmation Three year program preparing youth grades 6 to 8 to affirm their Baptism. Classroom learning is supplemented by social activities, service projects, and retreats throughout the year. Time: Wednesdays, 6:30 p.m. Location: Library Time: Sundays, 10:15 a.m. Location: Library High School Group Weekly meeting supplemented by monthly social activity. Time: Sundays, 10:15 a.m. Location: Fireside Room Learning in Motion (LIM) Calvary s Sunday School program for children ages 3 through Grade 5. Teachers and helpers are welcome to participate on both short and longterm basis. Time: Sundays, 10:15 a.m. Location: Learning Center #2 Acolytes Students in 5th-8th grades may serve as Acolytes. Acolytes light candles and assist in serving Communion. Altar Guild Prepares maintains and restores the altar areas for each worship service. Teams of two serve on a rotating basis Contact: Marshia Nicholson Assisting Minister Supports the presiding minister in leading portions of the liturgy, serving Holy Communion, writing the Prayers of the Church (optional), and assisting in Baptisms and other special services. Individuals serve on a rotating basis for the 9:00 a.m. worship service. Audio Visual Team Manages sound board and visual systems for worship services and special events. Individuals serve on a rotating basis. One year commitment or substitute basis. Contact: Glenn Sawyer Band See Deeper Life Band Worship & Music Building Supervisor Adheres to proper building procedure to ensure easy and appropriate access to the building for all worshipers when the church is open for services. 7 Women s Ministries Quilting Group Meets monthly to complete quilts. Calvary Quilting Group is a participant in the Lutheran World Relief effort to create and ship quilts around the world. Time: 2nd Monday, 10:00 a.m. Contacts: Corky Black, Madeline Yamada Widows Support Group Meets monthly for support and fellowship. Time: 3rd Thursday, 10:00 a.m. Location; Learning Center #1 Contact: Corky Black Children, Youth & Family Young Adult Ministry (YAM) Monthly gathering of young adults ages 18 to 40-ish. Childcare provided. Time: Varies Location: Varies Youth Easter Program (April) Easter program performed during a worship service leading up to Easter. Involves practices during Learning in Motion on Sundays (10:15 a.m.) and a dress rehearsal the Saturday prior to the program. Youth of all ages are invited to participate. Vacation Bible School (August) Held the first week of August, running from Monday through Friday from 9:00 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. each day and culminating in a Friday Night Family Program. Approximately 30 helpers are needed, from 6th graders through adults of all ages. Youth Christmas Program (December) Christmas program performed during a worship service in the month of December. Involves practices during Learning in Motion on Sundays (10:15 a.m.) and a dress rehearsal the Saturday prior to the program. Youth of all ages are invited to participate. 16 7

8 Connections Women s Ministries Care Connections Calvary Care Connection exists to make personal connections with those in need of help on a short-term basis. Care Connection specializes in the creative use of church and community resources. Contact: Gail Pierson Communion Visitation Team Provides Holy Communion to Calvary members who are homebound or hospitalized. Contact: Pastor Lori Cornell Hospitality Team Provide hospitality to both visitors and members in four areas of service: 1. Sunday Morning Hospitality Hospitality team members prepare and serve coffee and refreshments before and after Sunday morning services and are responsible for clean-up. Members serve on Sunday mornings individually or in pairs on a rotating schedule. Contact: Waverly Hagen 2. Newcomer Hospitality Provide food for inquiry/membership events, including Coffee with the Pastor and New Member Banquets and Brunches. Newcomer events are generally held quarterly. Contacts: Sherry Fleury, Patty Smith 3. Hospitality Coordinate and/or provide food for seasonal events, such as Lenten and Advent soup suppers. Opportunities are published and sign-up sheets are posted. Contact: Becky Riddle Elizabeth Circle Meets once a month for Bible study, fellowship, and service projects. Time: 2nd Thursday, 10:30 a.m. Location: Learning Center #2 Contact: Jean Nistad Lunch Bunch Meets once a month at a local restaurant for fellowship. Time: 3rd Thursday, 11:30 a.m. Location: Varies Contact: Mary Helen Amberson Naomi Circle Meets once a month in the home of various members for Bible study, fellowship, and service projects. 9 Pastoral Staff Rev. Lori A. Cornell, Senior Pastor Pastor Lori has served Calvary as pastor since Her priorities for ministry include empowering and equipping leaders for ministry, strengthening the church to respond to a changing world, and preaching and teaching the good news that we humans don t have to do anything to impress God, since God has already impressed his love on our hearts through Jesus Christ. Matt Byrd, Intergenerational Minister Matt has led the children, youth, and family ministries since Pastoral Care You can request visitation and service of Holy Communion by contacting the church office at (253) Office Support Staff Teresa Gildersleeve, Office Coordinator Sarah Nelson, Publications Coordinator Office Hours: Monday - Thursday, 9:00 a.m.- 3:00 p.m. Nursery Staff Staff Provided for newborns to 5 year olds for parents who wish to avail themselves of this ministry. Paid staff. Available for both Sunday worship services. Time: Sundays, 9:00 a.m., 11:15 a.m. Location: Nursery (near Great Room) Providers: Deborah Bonikowski, Hannah Thoreson 4. Funeral/Memorial Reception Coordinate and provide hospitality and social support to members and friends following a memorial or funeral service. Provide food and set-up and tear-down reception area. Volunteers serve on a rotating basis. Contacts: Gayle Miller, Charlotte Warner Hospitality, Coffee House Connections See Worship & Music section Nurture Coordinates ministry to meet the needs of congregants. Services include transportation to church and medical appointments and meals during illness or hospitalization. Food & Services Contact: Aileen Fink-Ambrose Transportation Contact: Karin Johnson Prayer Chain An list committed to praying for the needs and concerns of Calvary members, friends and family, and national and international issues. Prayer chain members commit to thoughtful and respectful dialogue. Contact: Phyllis Dirks Welcome Coordinates with Hospitality Ministry to provide intentional welcome to those who visit Calvary as guests. Two key areas of responsibility, ushers and greeters, remain under the leadership of the Worship & Music Ministry Team. Welcome team members are part of a rotating schedule which changes on a monthly basis. Visitors are telephoned to welcome them, provide connection and information, answer questions, and issue an invitation to upcoming events. Contact: Waverly Hagen 14 9

10 Operations Buildings & Grounds Teams Team is responsible for the planning and execution of all aspects of caring for Calvary s physical property. Time: 3rd Tuesday, 7:00 p.m. 1. Building & Grounds Maintenance Continual maintenance and improvement of Calvary s physical plant. Meets monthly. Contact: Bill Johnson 2. Building Renovations Upcoming project: Contacts: Keith Klungness, Phil Sell Church Council Operates to recognize, frame, and serve the vision of the church by developing strategies and leadership that enable all areas of ministry to function effectively. Comprised of the senior pastor and twelve Calvary church members, each elected to serve 2-year terms by the congregation. Meets monthly. Time: 2nd Tuesday, 7:00 p.m. Contact: Sharon Stenersen Finance Administration Elected by Council and affirmed by the congregation to record and maintain the church s finances. Contacts: Gary Bergstrom, Treasurer Corky Black, Financial Secretary Outreach Sack Lunch Program Provides free sack lunches to anyone in the Federal Way area in need of a meal, regardless of their situation. Ministry team members are scheduled to serve based on their availability. Lunches are served just inside the back door of the church, leading into the kitchen. Lunches are assembled once a week. Set-up begins at 10:45 a.m., 15 minutes prior to opening doors. Time: Monday - Thursday, 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. Location: Kitchen area Contact: Sandy Cook SOS* Personal care supplies are gathered to support Community Supper s hygiene supplies ministry. Products from socks to tooth paste are provided to Community Supper guests as needed. Calvary members are encouraged to donate travel toiletries. All donations can be left in the church office, marked SOS. SEASONAL Operation Christmas Child* Calvary participates in Samaritan s Purse annual Christmas project blessing children around the world with Christmas gifts. Special shoes boxes are filled with age appropriate gifts and gathered for shipment each October and November. Contacts: Marcly Curtis Untree A Christmas tree is placed in the church lobby just before Thanksgiving. It is covered with gift tags, listing the names and needs of local residents. (In recent years, guests at Community Supper have been selected to be blessed by this ministry.) Calvary members select gift tags to fulfill, purchasing gift cards. These gifts are distributed shortly before Christmas. Contact: Heidi Haynes *Partnered Community Care

11 Community Supper* Calvary has partnered with Federal Way Community Caregiving Network (FWCCN) to provide a free dinner each week to the homeless in our community. Opportunities for involvement include shopping, cooking, set-up, guest registration, serving, giving out SOS supplies, and administration and record keeping. Time: Thursdays, 6:00 p.m. Location: Fellowship Hall Coordinators: Kari Martin, Natalie Glenn Reach Out Homeless Shelter* Calvary participates in a program providing shelter for the homeless during the winter months. For two months of the annual October through March shelter, Calvary hosts participants in our facility and assists in preparing and serving meals during the other four months. Time: 4th Monday, 4:30 p.m. Location: Fellowship Hall Contacts: Suzanne Higgins, Al Parke Red Wagon A real red wagon is rolled through both worship services once monthly, collecting items for the ministry focus chosen each month. Time: Contact: Outreach 2nd Sunday, both services Marcly Curtis Operations Finance Team Maintains high standards of financial practices and coordinates with leadership for budgeting and best use of resources. Communicates with congregation on Calvary s financial status. Meets monthly. Time: 4th Tuesday, 7:00 p.m. Contact: Dave Baughman, Team Leader Library Administers and maintains the church library. Involves collecting, cataloging, and circulating books and other media materials. Contact: Nellie Gordon Management Team Oversees church operations, develops strategies to enable council members to fulfill their ministry, and sets the Council agenda. Team includes Council President, Vice-President, Secretary, Finance Team Liaison, and Senior Pastor. Meets monthly. Time: 1st Tuesday, 7:00 p.m. Location: Office Workroom Contact: Mike Ragan Nominating Committee Elected by the congregation at the annual meeting in January for a one-year term. Invites candidates for Council and other designated positions as needed. Stewardship Team Coordinate congregational emphasis on sharing gifts of time, talent, and finances. The team leads members annually in the pledging of these gifts
