2 PICNIC AND HARVEST FESTIVAL CHAIR: Annual fundraising and community events to help with parish upkeep. Directed by chairperson and team who organize and oversee all aspects of the events. Requires the ability to motivate and work with a variety of people. Booth Chairperson: Responsible for operating a designated booth in preparation for and on the day of the event. Includes set up, clean up and recruiting booth workers. Dining Room Worker: Assists in the set up, serving and clean up of meals. Kitchen Helpers: Prepares or cooks the food for the dinner and helps in the cleanup of the kitchen area and dishes. Set up and Clean up committee: Helps before and after activities. CEMETERY COMMITTEE: Oversees the development and upkeep of St. George Cemetery according to the directives of the archdiocese. Will you answer His call to serve your parish?
3 Page 3 Administration The community is accountable to be stewards of the abundant blessings it has been given and to use these to carryout the parish mission. Parish personnel practices embrace the grinding principles of the archdiocese. Financial records and bookkeeping procedures comply with archdiocesan standards. PARISH COUNCIL: Representatives of the parish, foster the full participation of the entire parish in the life and mission of the parish and the Universal Church by setting parish direction and planning. Requires participation in the parish selection process and to have one s name drawn for service. Monthly meetings. Consultative to the pastor. FINANCE COUNCIL: Mandated by Church law to advise the pastor in the financial area of parish life. Appointed by the pastor. Saint John the Apostle Parish Mission Statement St. John s is a faith-filled, visionary Catholic community that strives to be a responsible, supportive and compassionate neighbor. Identity Statement: St. John the Apostle is a parish community of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Louisville and was established in 1892 as St. George Parish. In 1931 the parish name was changed to St. John the Apostle. St. John s has a proud heritage. ADMINISTRATION COMMITTEE: Upholds the work of the parish ministries and programs by maintaining and planning improvements to keep the parish facilities and grounds in good order. Directed by the pastor. Ground and facilities: Volunteers working under the direction of the Administration committee concerning maintenance. Yard Work: Volunteers to weed and clean designated areas of the property. Living Memorial Committee: Volunteers to weed and clean the living memorial area. Handyman jobs: volunteers to help with minor projects and repairs (janitorial, plumber, electrical, yard work, heaving lifting) There are a variety of gifts but always the same spirit; there are all sorts of service to be done but always the same Lord; working in all sorts of different ways in different people, it is the same God who is working in all of them. The particular way in which the Spirit is given to each person is for a good purpose. 1 Corinthians 12:4-7 How can YOU help YOUR parish?
4 Worship The source and summit of our community s faith life MUSIC enhances parish Liturgies providing song under direction of the Music Minister who follows the guide of the archdiocesan Office of Worship. Instrumentalist: requires knowledge of playing a musical instrument in accompaniment to the hymns at Mass. Choir: used for Christmas, Easter and special celebrations throughout the year, requires the ability to sing in a group and time to practice. *We also have a children s choir for elementary students and a youth choir for middle and high school students. Resurrection Choir: sings for funeral Masses. Cantor: Leads the singing at Mass. Requires the ability to read music and lead the assembly in song. LITURGY the community of Faith gathers to give praise and thanks to God Altar Servers assist the celebrant with the movement of the liturgy at weekend Masses. Open to anyone 4th grade and older. Requires formal training and commitment to show up when scheduled. Directed by the DRE. Acolytes are older teens and adults who go through special training to assist the priest on the altar during Mass, especially at funerals. Directed by the parish priest and DRE. CATECHETICAL MINISTRY for children/teens provides an opportunity for adults to teach or assist in the religious education programs for children and teens in the parish. Religious Education Classes for grades Teachers and aides, formation and training provided by the archdiocese and through the parish DRE. Teaching commitment is to each Wednesday night mid-august through April. The DRE is responsible for the development and implementation of the parish program following the directives of the Archdiocesan Office of Lifelong Formation and Education. Children s Church for preschool children ages 3-5. Teachers and aides follow a program planned by the DRE teaching monthly from September to June through the nursery. Gather the Children for children Kindergarten through grade 4. The children are dismissed at the opening prayer and return during the Offertory. They hear the readings, homily, and prayers of the faithful at their age level. VBS (Vacation Bible School) provides a one week opportunity for children ages 3-12 to come together for religious education in a specific timeframe. A variety of teachers, aides and helpers needed. Sacramental Preparation for Reconciliation, Eucharist and Confirmation are part of the Religious Education Program. Youth Ministry: Dedicated adult volunteers to be part of a team who work with the youth of the parish under the direction of Meade Co Youth Ministry. Includes monthly meetings, service, summer camps, and mission trips. Support Staff: Helps with various aspects of YM, as needed. JYM (Junior Youth Ministry) A parent run program for youth in middle school, providing opportunities for service, social and worship activities including a summer outing every other year. Other Formation/Education: volunteer to lead or teach a group a special skill or need. (Computers, rosary making, etc.) Parking lot attendants: help guide traffic with pick up after RE classes on Wednesday nights. Lifelong Formation/Education is under the direction of the DRE.
5 Lifelong Formation and Education Based on the teachings of Christ, Scripture, Tradition, Liturgy, teaching authority of the Church, and the life of the Church. ADULT FORMATION assists the faithful in their ongoing Formation under the direction of the director of religious education. Scripture Study Groups organized under the direction of the DRE meet regularly on Tuesday evenings as well as other daytime schedules. The topics are varied as are the group leaders. Need leadership and communication skills. Includes Why Catholic and other short-term groups. RCIA (Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults): Team members participate in educating and guiding other adults interested in learning more about the Catholic Faith. Those in the class are preparing for the Sacraments of Initiation. Team membership requires a commitment of time and includes presenting designated topics. Meets Tuesday evenings September through April. Under the direction of the parish priest and deacon. Prayer Groups for men and women meet every Sunday before Mass for prayer and/or Scripture study. Baptism Preparation: Parents are required, Godparents are encouraged to attend this class before their child s baptism. The team presents information about the Sacrament. Under the direction of the DRE. Marriage Preparation: Couples, trained through the archdiocesan Catholic Center for Families, meet with engaged couples in collaboration with the pastor. Travel Group: Plan religious/educational/social outings for parish adults. Eucharistic Minister: Delegated to distribute Holy Communion to the faithful during Mass. Requires reception of Confirmation, good standing with the church, participate in the training from the parish to be trained in parish procedures. Directed by the coordinator and pastor. Lector: A reader who proclaims the Word of God at Masses as well as at other liturgical services. Directed by the coordinator as guided by the parish priest. Usher: take up collection, hand out bulletins, help people find seats, carry gifts as needed. Gift Bearers: Carry the gifts to the altar in preparation for Holy Communion. Hospitality Minister: welcomes/greets parishioners as they arrive for Mass. Directed by the worship chairperson. Sacristan: prepares and sets up the vessels to be used at each Mass. Directed by the worship chair and parish priest. Church Environment: Create an ambiance in spirit of each Liturgical Season. Plans for the décor for feasts and season of the church year. Decorating skills and study of the Church s liturgical documents are helpful. Sets up the environment for a given occasion/season as directed by the coordinator of environment. Worship Committee Chairperson: Makes sure all the above Liturgy volunteer positions are filled, helps with special Mass/Holy Day needs (especially Holy Week), leads or has someone lead Stations of the Cross, prepares budget for worship committee. Leads or works with parish mission team. (Music is under the direction of the music minister.)
6 Service By Baptism, Catholics are called to serve one another. In imitation of Christ who said, I have come to serve, not to be served. Parish Life/Stewardship Assist with Church Dinners: Assist the service chairperson plan and carry out special parish meals, such as Confirmation and the senior Mass dinner. May help decorate, cook, and/or serve. Prayer Chain/Card Ministry: Pray for others in need. You will be sent an notifying you of people requesting prayers (surgery, illness, loss). You will also have the option of sending them a card. Please submit your address to join this ministry, as you will be notified via only. Prayer Ministry: Consciously praying for the needs of the parish and especially those asking for prayer on the prayer request list published weekly in the bulletin. Ministry to the sick and homebound: Care of family members in need, visit with and bring Communion to the homebound and those in Medco, transportation to Mass, the doctor, grocery or other needs. Bereavement: Meal following funeral. Set up, serve and clean up, telephone for food donations, prepare a dish and bring to cafeteria for meals. Sports: Organize and coach adult and youth teams participating in the Meade County church leagues. Nursery: caring adults to care for children while parents attend Mass or other parish functions. Rosary Makers: Make rosaries to be sent to missions or used as needed. Jail Ministry: Visit the local jail for prayer and sharing. Sew & Sews club is an outreach ministry for the sick and homebound through prayer and the gifting of quilts made by the members. The prayer quilts, available upon request, are a reminder of the faith community s continuing prayer for their welfare. Social Activities: Help plan special activities such as potluck dinners, receptions, and other special events that help promote fellowship in our parish. Plans receptions for Confirmation, senior Mass, the parish mission and other special functions as needed. Reports pantry needs to chair. Red Cross Blood Drive volunteers to help Red Cross workers with canteen and sign in sheet. Service Chairperson: Will oversee the service/social volunteers and keeps the pantry stocked for parish use. Social Mission Outreach to those in need within the community is done by working at the Community Clothes Closet and Food Pantry under the coordination of its director and sponsored by the Meade County Ministerial Association. Contribute food for parish food baskets. Help in the preparation and distribution of holiday food baskets. Bring food to church on the Sunday of Food Drives sponsored by the M.C. Ministerial Association s Food Pantry. Contribute money to the parish charity fund for use in assistance to families in need. Donate to special collections of specific needs in the parish, community or archdiocese. Respect Life advocacy work to promote the Church s stance on dignity of all life.
