2 Most of the informa,on is covered in more depth on the Informa,on Services Division website. This is the only web address you will need to remember from this presenta,on. The New Students in the lea corner on the ISD home page (highlighted in red on this slide) groups together the topics covered in this presenta,on. 2

3 At registra,on you will be given a starter informa,on pack (show Z- card). The IT essen,als Z- card contains a summary of the points made in this presenta,on and the web addresses men,oned. 3

4 To use many central IT services you will need a UCL userid and password. If you haven t already got these through the pre- enrolment process or another means please go to the ISD Service Desk located in the DMS Watson library to retrieve these details. You will need to show your UCL ID card so you need to enrol first. 4

5 Your account is primarily for academic use, but we do accept that students need it for personal purposes as well. Any misuse of your account will be your responsibility so please don t let anyone else use it or watch you type in your password and, make sure that you log out when you leave your computer una@ended. Your password expires aaer 5 months and we will send you s reminding you of this. If you don t change your password before it expires you will have up to a week to change it online. You are strongly advised to register for the user authen0ca0on service if you haven t already. If you do this now and forget your password, you will be able to reset your password by answering some ques,ons online rather than having to go along in person to the Service Desk. Follow the Myaccount link from the ISD website for more informa,on. 5

6 You need to be aware of and comply with the UCL Informa0on Security Policy or you may lose access to your account. Copyright viola0on (downloading films, music, books) contravenes the UCL Informa,on Policy and the law. Be aware of iden,ty thea we will never ask you for your password; if you are unsure, ask, do not respond to suspect s or click on any links. It is your responsibility to manage your personal devices and keep them free from malware. UCL provides free an0- virus soaware for students. Find out more about all of this on the Informa0on Security Group web pages. 6

7 The Service Desk is the principal point of contact when things go wrong, when you want IT informa,on or if you need technical advice. They re open regular office hours and can be contacted in person in the DMS Watson library, by or telephone. Follow the Service Desk link on the ISD website for further details. 7

8 is the mail service for students. Your address will usually be for example but there are excep,ons such as people with middle names etc. You will receive an with your address. You must check your UCL regularly as Informa,on Services, the Library, Registry and tutors will use this rather than any other address. You should also use your UCL to send UCL related ques,ons; some services will not be able to help you if you do not them from a UCL address. 8

9 You can access your UCL from the webmail login link under Quick Links on the ISD web site but you can also access it from your own computer, tablet or smartphone. You sign into windows live with your liveid which is your UCL You don t need to include the word live when giving people your address, this is just for logging in. 9

10 Most students halls have data points to give you access through a wired connec,on. For trouble shoo,ng and guidance go to the Halls of Residence link on the ISD web page. 10

11 Our campus wifi service is called Eduroam. Details of how to connect are available on the ISD website and if you have problems there are regular surgeries at the Service Desk at 14:00 to 15:00 un,l 4 th October. 11

12 Moodle is the main online learning environment and your tutors will use it to support your modules. Moodle also contains some general courses which are open to all such as a sta,s,cs course and courses on developing library skills. To get a feel for Moodle we have an Introduc)on to Learning with Technology course in Moodle aimed at new students do take a look. 12

13 Por,co is the student informa,on system for UCL. Through it you can: Communicate with your Personal Tutor Update your contact addresses Select modules View your results You can also use Por,co for your Personal and Professional Development. 13

14 UCL has iden,fied 4 main categories of skills and competencies that students need - Academic, Self- management, Communica,ng and Working with Others. You can use the Personal & Professional Development (or PPD) tab in PORTICO to self- assess in these areas, iden,fy areas for development and make an ac,on plan to discuss with your Personal Tutor. You can also find links to self- study resources and help in developing your CV. You can find resources and training materials via the PPD website. You can use MyPorkolio to present evidence of your skills development. 14

It covers: gelng ready for academic study, disserta,ons and plagiarism, cri,cal thinking, employability & personal development. The PPD website has more informa,on and a link. 16

17 Turni,n is UCL s plagiarism detec,on service. When you submit a piece of work it is checked against a huge database to make sure that it is your own work. You can find out more and try it out before submilng your assignment from the Plagiarism and academic wri,ng Moodle course. 17

18 There is a wide range of IT Training available for FREE at UCL. We have a vast library of nearly 100,000 videos and also text based self- paced materials. We offer face to face training courses for students covering MS Office 2013 including using Word to write disserta,ons and theses, EndNote, sta,s,cal analysis, website design, programming and much more. Training is offered both to beginners and to more advanced users of the applica,ons. 18

19 The IT Training Drop- In Service runs in the DMS Watson Teaching Cluster during term,me. No booking is necessary. We offer General IT help related to your work and Specialist help including help in Sta,s,cal, Bibliographic and Graphics packages. Find out more from the IT Training link on the ISD website. 19

20 UCL Go! contains lots of useful informa,on about UCL including a directory, loca,on finder and access to your,metable. It is available as a smartphone app. 20

21 The UCL Online Timetable displays your personal,metable week by week with details of lectures, seminars etc. related to your modules. IT is available on a smartphone app. It can be accessed by clicking on the Student Timetables link on the ISD web page. The online,metable can be used to populate personal calendars. 21

22 The service is available in all student Computer Rooms and can be accessed using your UCL userid and password. This gives a consistent Desktop no ma@er where you log in. A wide range of soaware from MicrosoA Office 2013, to web authoring and specialist academic packages are provided there are over 100 different packages available to you. You have your own personal drive, the N: Drive, on which you can store your work and access it whenever you log on to a machine in a student Computer Workroom. The Service also provides virus protec,on and a nightly back up which is archived for two years. Find out where the student Computer Workrooms are by following the link on the ISD web site. PC availability in each student Computer Workroom can be found on the ISD website and the UCL- Go app. 22

23 You can access the including all the applica,ons and your files from a PC or laptop anywhere in the world using Citrix Receiver as long as you have an internet connec,on and a web browser such as Internet Explorer or Firefox. 23

24 Our service includes the ability to scan to and to print wirelessly from mobile devices. You will receive 12 free credit to get you started but aaer that you will need to top up your credit. You can print up to 240 pages per year free of charge, in any of the student Computer workrooms. AAer this you will be charged 5p per copy for black and white prin,ng and 25p for colour. Prin,ng double sided costs the same as prin,ng single sided green and frugal! 24
