1 How To Connect To the WIT Wi-Fi Using Eduroam CAT Tools Introduction To connect to the Internet in WIT with your laptop or phone, you need to have a current student login or a current staff login with a valid password. The username and password is required for security reasons. If you don t have a current username and password, unfortunately you won t be able to logon to the WIT Wi-Fi network. There are times however when you may not be able to connect even with a current username and password. If you cannot connect your laptop to the WIT Wi-Fi but can do it normally at home or elsewhere, you may have to download a piece of software to be able to use it on the WIT Wi-Fi network. The same may have to be done for Apple computers and also for phones. The tool you need is found on the website cat.eduroam.org. You can download it at home or from another PC connected to the wired network or even from another laptop if a friend/colleague has managed to logon to the Wi-Fi network with his/her device. 1 P a g e C o n n e c t i n g t o W I T Wi- Fi N o v

2 Instructions Make sure you are using a PC which has access to the Internet. Open up a web browser as normal and enter the following address cat.eduroam.org When you open up the webpage, click on eduroam user: download your eduroam installer button. 2 P a g e C o n n e c t i n g t o W I T Wi- Fi N o v

3 Next choose Waterford Institute of Technology from the list that appears by clicking on it: 3 P a g e C o n n e c t i n g t o W I T Wi- Fi N o v

4 A screen similar to the one below appears. Choose All-Platforms if you are downloading it for a different PC. Otherwise click on the big blue button which has your operating system on it and the words Download your eduroam installer. 4 P a g e C o n n e c t i n g t o W I T Wi- Fi N o v

5 If you are downloading it for a different PC, choose the operating system of the different PC on which you will be installing the tool - for example if the laptop has Windows 10 on it, choose MS Windows 10. If it is Windows 8, choose MS Windows 8, 8.1 from the list. If you are downloading the tool to install on another PC, choose Save. Once it s saved, check your download folder and copy the file to a USB stick. The file you are looking for should start with the word eduroam copy the exe onto the laptop to be connected and run by double clicking. The next time you try to connect to Eduroam or the WIT Wi-Fi, you should be able to logon. 5 P a g e C o n n e c t i n g t o W I T Wi- Fi N o v

6 Otherwise, click on Run if you are installing it on the machine being used to do the download. Again restart when finished. The laptop should now be able to connect to the network. Note that if you choose to use eduroam, you must put in your username eg JBLOGGS or followed eg and If you are using the WIT Wi-Fi networks, you just need to put in your username and password no need to put Other things which can cause problems on laptops are: firewall settings certain virus checker eg Norton 360 seems to cause problems when connecting, viruses themselves on the laptops, an invalid account/password eg account has expired or the password has expired. Unfortunately there are so many possible combinations of the above that Computer Services cannot list all the possible solutions here. However, installing the cat tool generally solves 99% of connection problems to the WIT wireless network. 6 P a g e C o n n e c t i n g t o W I T Wi- Fi N o v

7 I ve ruled out the virus checker, viruses and firewall settings but still can t connect is there anything else I can do? If you are still having problems connecting to the Wi-Fi, having installed the cat tools and having checked your virus checker and firewall settings, you may need to check your certificate settings as well. Open up your Wi-Fi connections. Right click on the Wi-Fi connection that you want to connect to. Choose Properties from the menu which appears. 8 Untick Validate Server Certificate box (located near the top of the dialog box): Click Ok and click OK again. Try connecting to the Wi-Fi again. After a few seconds, a login box should appear on the screen. Enter your username and password as normal. Remember that if it is eduroam, you have to put after your username. Also you won t get this box if you are using the unsecure WIT Wi-Fi connection. 8 P a g e C o n n e c t i n g t o W I T Wi- Fi N o v

9 You are now connected to eduroam or WIT Wi-Fi as the case may be but you will see that you have only got Limited Access only because your laptop hasn t gone outside the WIT firewall yet. The next steps show the different screens you get when you use Firefox and Internet Explore to browse the Internet. The process is basically the same but the screens do look different. Remember it is important to use Internet Explorer, Firefox or Safari for the initial connection to the network. Chrome gives errors when you try to connect at first. However, once you successfully view a webpage in Internet Explorer, Firefox or Safari, you can then go back to Chrome if you wish. 9 P a g e C o n n e c t i n g t o W I T Wi- Fi N o v

10 I ve connect but I m getting some very strange messages when I try to browse. Open up Internet Explorer or Firefox or Safari (if on an Apple device). Important: Don t use Chrome for the initial connection it won t work. Go to a site for example the screen below appears if you re using Firefox. Click on I understand the risks and then click on Add Exception The screen (right) is displayed. Click on Confirm Security Exception. 10 P a g e C o n n e c t i n g t o W I T Wi- Fi N o v

12 For IE, you will get the following screen, when you try to browse the Internet after first logging in.
