3 15 years of Medical Faculty II Poznan University of Medical Sciences, Poland (former: Karol Marcinkowski University of Medical Sciences) The first 10 years of Medical Faculty II Poznań University Poland Following a decision of the University Senate, a separate Faculty of Medicine consisting of three Divisions, namely those of Medical Education in English, Dentistry and Postgraduate Medical Education was established in February The project got under way in september 1993 with the arriving of the first group of students from America and Canada who came to Poznań to study medicine in our 4-year Program in English. This program is designed for premedical college graduates, is based on the American curriculum and was planned for an initial intake of approximately 25 students per annum. Over the past ten years some 250 students have entered the School. So far, 147 have received their diplomas and most have passed the U.S. licensing examinations and been accepted for residencies in American hospitals. After this successful start, a 6-year Program in English, based on the Polish/European model, was introduced 2 years later with the entry in 1995 of a small group of Greek students. Over the years the size and composition of entry has grown and changed so that the current intake of students has also reached 25, mostly from Scandinavia but including a few students from other European countries and America. In 2001 we launched the last of our planned English - language based projects with the introduction of a 5-year program in dentistry. On graduation these students will be eligible to practice in any of the 25 countries of the European Union or, by completing a statutory 2-year period of training in an American dental school, in the U.S. In addition to these undergraduate programs Faculty II fulfills all the graduate obligations laid down in the University statutes and defined in the relevant Polish laws. Thus, in 1993, the Faculty was granted the

4 authority to award higher degrees in medicine, dentistry and medical biology. In the past ten years the Faculty has awarded more than 300 Ph.D s, 54 individuals have had their additional higher degrees (habilitation) recognized by the Polish Central Committee for Scientific Degrees and the title of Professor has been conferred upon 30 members of Faculty. Recent achievements include national accreditation of our dental program, receiving authority from the Ministry of Health to organize obligatory specialized postgraduate courses and the construction, to be completed by 2005, of a fine new building for the Dental School, the first custom built one in Poland. None of these projects could have been successful without the efforts of a dedicated group of people who believed in the high quality of Polish medical education and the professional skills of our academic staff. This group includes Professors Pruszewicz and Wiktor (our School representative in America) who initiated the project, successive Rectors and Deans who brought it to fruition and the continuing efforts of all the teachers taking part. An invaluable contribution has also been made by the students themselves who have been responsible for many of the improvements made to the various programs over the past decade. Finally, our claims of success are not without foundation. In several national surveys the Poznań medical school was ranked 2 nd (out of 11) in the year 2000, 1 st in 2001 and 1 st again in We have made a good start and are determined to do every thing in our power to ensure that when we send our graduates out into the world they are fully equipped to serve their patients with the knowledge, skill and dedication they deserve.
