3 It is due to a lucky coincidence that the Summer School of Architecture 2015 will take place at Wrocław University of Technology in the run up to the celebrations of the 70th anniversary of Polish science in Wroclaw. It is both a time of memories and summaries, as well as making plans for the future. In the first decades after the war the mission of the Faculty of Architecture concentrated on the reconstruction and rebuilding of the city, whose centre was ruined in nearly 70%. This goal was achieved, as evidenced by the appearance of the contemporary Wrocław. However, challenges posed by the 21st century that are faced by architects are no less daunting than those that were undertaken by the predecessors years ago. The 1999 Beijing Charter at the XX Congress of the UIA pointed out: Over the past century, the world has turned into a very different place. Yet one thing remains the same: we architects are again at a cross roads as a world profession. Currently we may conclude that none of the Millennium Development Goals has been achieved to the extent in which it was assumed. One-third of urban residents in developing regions still live in slums, the number of homeless and unemployed is rising and the concrete jungles of nowadays metropolitan areas have become a decisive factor in how people perceive their relation to the nature. Obviously architecture is not able to save the world, but it certainly has to fulfil a very important role in shaping a built environment in the manner which is friendlier both for people and the planet. Sustainable architecture, sometimes referred to as green, is born from the empathy and reverence for the humans as well as other living creatures. It applies modest means to achieve significant targets. Nevertheless, the concept of sustainable development is primarily related to a specific model of life, which has become the subject of research, teaching and practical applications at many universities affiliated to the ISCN International Sustainable Campus Network. Organizing a Summer School in the jubilee year for the Faculty of Architecture in Wrocław, we would like to invite our guests to discuss how to transform our universities into ones more eco-responsible and green. We will consider these issues on the example of the FA campus, which will be the subject of the common brain storms, studies and projects. I believe that it will be inspiring for all of us.
