1 The periodical Polish Archaeology in the Mediterranean brings annual reports from excavation and conservation projects carried out by missions from the Polish Centre of Mediterranean Archaeology, University of Warsaw, in countries of northeastern Africa (Egypt and Sudan) and the Near East (Syria, Iraq, Lebanon and Cyprus, most recently also Kuwait and Iran). The objective is to hand the archaeological community a ready set of information from current fieldwork within months of the completion of the work. Of necessity brief and cursory at first, over the years these reports have grown in volume and significance, going from the original 10 reports each to the present 60 plus, and from 83 pages in Volume One to a regular 500 plus in recent volumes. Since the 1996 Reports, only the English language volume is brought out (volumes II through VII exist in parallel Polish and English editions; the content of the first volume differs somewhat between the two language editions). The Reports are published with PCMA budgetary funds. From 1996 through 2005 the publication was published with financial support from the Ministry of National Education of the Republic of Poland and the State Committee for Scientific Research (KBN). Since 2006 the Ministry of Science and Higher Education provides funds for the project. The Reports started out as simple copy job printing, evolving toward a regular publication. Black and white photographs started being published in Volume VIII and color was introduced in Volume XV. Since Volume X the Reports have appeared in a new, bigger format and new graphic design. The first volume was published for the PCMA by Warsaw University Press in 1990 and now, starting with Volume XVII, the reports are once again being published by the University s publishing house.
