7 Todd Winton, education graduate As a learning diversity teacher working with students from Years 8 to 10, education graduate Todd Winton s role involves teaching small group classes and tailoring learning experiences to suit students individual educational needs. My Griffith degree gave me the confidence and experience with a vast range of teaching practices, he said. It also helped me develop a range of appropriate practices to improve student outcomes, he said. As for the future, Todd is particularly interested in senior transition planning. I want to work with students to ensure they are provided with as many opportunities to lead successful and fulfilling lives after school, he said. This includes preparing students with important skills and ensuring they are ready to join the workforce. Todd is currently studying a Graduate Certificate in Special Needs Education with a view to enrolling in a masters degree at Griffith. Throughout my study, I was able to participate in many different classroom contexts, giving me a deeper insight into the teaching profession. 5

Louise Bezzina is the Director of Bleach* Festival, the largest arts and cultural festival on the Gold Coast. Louise credits her applied theatre degree with opening many doors into the arts industry. It was a wonderful mix of practical training and theory, providing a fantastic foundation for my career. Prep teacher and Griffith education graduate Kelly McBurnie was recently awarded a National Excellence in Teaching Award for Innovation for her work with prep children at St Peter s Lutheran College, Indooroopilly. Education graduate Lisa Stick always wanted to be a health and physical education teacher and is now enjoying working at a Brisbane secondary school. Lisa s advice for prospective students is to get involved with as many things as possible at university. Bachelor of Secondary Education Taneille Crase wants to help children achieve their sporting dreams. The award-winning athlete is a member of the Griffith Sports College and said health and physical education was her favourite subject in primary school. Education is such an important part of our lives and I want to assist children achieve their personal aspirations. With my experience in the sporting field I feel like I have a lot to bring to the students, Taneille said. Undergraduate education degrees 9

12 Professional experience placements The School of Education and Professional Studies provides students with quality on-the-job supervised teaching experiences called professional experience placements within early childhood settings and primary and secondary schools. While many of our students are placed in local schools, some have chosen to have their professional experience placements in rural, remote and culturally diverse locations within Australia and overseas including: Waikiki Elementary School, Honolulu, which, in addition to Hawaii State Performance Standards, follows a mindful philosophy to prepare students as effective problem solvers both inside and outside the classroom Green School, Bali, Indonesia, which pioneers sustainability within education with its environmentally sensitive construction, and instils sustainable habits in its students through a curriculum that combines academic and experiential learning with a creative arts curriculum Singapore International School, which offers an international program that combines a Singapore academic curriculum with elements of the Queensland Studies Authority s curriculum Ocean of Light International School, Tonga, which is dedicated to developing the spiritual, intellectual, and physical potential of its students through an international curriculum from Cambridge University, and is founded on the Baha i Faith and its teachings of unity in diversity Normanton State School, a small cattle town located in a remote community just south of the Gulf of Carpentaria in Far North Queensland. 13 Postgraduate education degrees Sonia Moyle, special needs education Special needs teacher Sonia Moyle said the specialist skills and knowledge she learnt in Griffith s Master of Special Needs and Intervention Education gave her the confidence to establish a new early childhood development program. Sonia also mentors pre-service teachers with the Teacher Education Centre of Excellence, and presents guest lectures on technology in the classroom. Griffith s flexible online study enabled me to schedule around full-time work and a young family while still remaining connected to my cohort and lecturers. The degree enabled me to apply the practical theory and pedagogy in my day-to-day work in teaching students with special needs. My journey as an early childhood specialist and special educator has been an experience of growth and reflection from which I have honed my craft to provide best practice for my students and their families. 11

Applicants must have completed a quarter of their degree (or other studies) in the first of their nominated teaching area. That is, the first teaching area must include a minimum of 6 courses for senior secondary. The second teaching area must include another four courses minimum for junior secondary, or 6 courses minimum for senior secondary. To qualify for the Learning Support specialist area applicants must have completed subjects in psychology. Note. If you re an international applicant, or if you re an Australian applicant with English as a second language, you ll need to provide evidence of a standard of English language proficiency equivalent to an overall IELTS score of 7.5 (academic) with no score below 7 in any of the four skill areas, and a score of no less than 8 in speaking and listening. What you ll study If you re a graduate from a non-education background and wish to teach in secondary school settings, this degree will give you the necessary skills and knowledge you need to register with the Queensland College of Teachers. You ll learn the theory and practice of teaching, as well as about the characteristics of learners and teachers and the social contexts of education. The degree includes education studies, curriculum studies in two nominated teaching areas, and professional experience in secondary school settings. What you ll study This pre-service teacher education degree is for graduates from a noneducation background. It will give you the professional preparation to teach in primary school (Prep to Year 6) settings. You ll learn the theory and practice of teaching, including the characteristics of learners, the social and educational contexts of education, curriculum studies and professional experience in relevant settings. Professional accreditation You will be eligible to apply for registration with the Queensland College of Teachers. This qualification is recognised nationally. Career opportunities You will be eligible for provisional teacher registration and be equipped to teach in primary and early years settings nationally. Paul Robotham s former IT career provided the perfect platform for his current role as a computer and business education teacher. Paul complemented his technological knowledge with teaching skills and practice by completing a Graduate Diploma of Education Secondary. In my previous career I produced software which was enjoyable on a personal level, but teaching brings many other rewards. What you ll study This masters degree will prepare you for professional roles in adult, vocational and community education, training and professional development. You ll develop your existing vocational knowledge and build your capacity for professional work in training, teaching, development and research-related roles. Career opportunities You ll be prepared for a career in training and development, including professional education or training and development roles in private and public sector organisations. This may include in your current professional field. The teaching specialisation of this degree will equip you to pursue careers in mainstream adult and vocational education fields, such as the vocational education and training (VET) sector. Please note that this degree does not lead to teacher registration. The profound experience of having a family member cope with intellectual impairment inspired Danielle Ward to pursue a Master of Autism Studies. She hoped to use her degree to strive for positive outcomes for people with autism spectrum disorders (ASD). Danielle said there was an urgent need for greater knowledge and empathy regarding the social, communication and behavioural challenges facing people with developmental disabilities classed as ASDs. With some form of autism diagnosed in one in every hundred people, it s likely every teacher will come into contact with a person affected by an ASD, so to be armed with that level of professional and personal insight is invaluable, Danielle said. 14 Education Degrees Guide 2016

What you ll study These degrees, offered by the Autism Centre of Excellence, have a multidisciplinary, whole-of-life focus and are designed for people who want to provide quality intervention and management for people with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). In the graduate certificate, you ll gain a foundation in ASD, including communication, learning style and behaviour management. In the masters, you ll build on this knowledge and learn about critical issues in autism such as transitions, collaborative practices and environmental management. You ll gain a comprehensive understanding and skills in research and practice for individuals with ASD, which will enable you to work effectively with learners with autism and their families at home, in school, at work and in the community. These degrees address an area of acute need as determined by the Australian Department of Families, Housing, Community Services and Indigenous Affairs, Australian Department of Education, Employment and Workplace Relations, Queensland Department of Education and Training, and the Queensland Department of Communities, Child Safety and Disability Services. Career opportunities As a graduate, you ll be well equipped to advance into leadership and specialist roles in education, health, government policy, social work and service provision for people with ASD and their families. Educators with specialised knowledge in providing for the needs of learners with ASDs are in high demand in public and private education sectors, and you may find work as a specialist teacher, school leader, curriculum leader or consultant.
