HR 140: Intrductin t Human Resurces Curse Descriptin This survey curse prvides students with an intrductin t the field f human resurces [HR]. It fcuses n the interdisciplinary nature f the field, its histry, evlutin, and current state. Three dmains f peratin human resurce management [HRM], wrkplace learning and perfrmance [WLP], and human resurce administratin [HRA] are examined. The three primary rles f the human resurce prfessinal are als intrduced administrative, peratinal/emplyee advcate, and strategic. Finally, the varius cmpetencies assciated with HR are explred. Each class will encmpass a specific theme: Class 1: The Changing Wrld f Human Resurces Class 2: Human Resurces in Tday s Organizatins Class 3: The Language and Scpe f Human Resurces Class 4: The Functins and Gals f Human Resurces Class 5: Maximizing Human Capital Curse Objectives At the end f this curse, students are expected t: 1. Understand what HR is and des as an interdisciplinary prfessin. 2. Understand the histry and evlutin f HR as a prfessin. 3. Explre the changing wrk envirnment and its impact n the field f HR. 4. Discuss the range f hw the HR functin is used in tday s rganizatins. 5. Understand key HR cncepts and terms and be able t respnd t questins utilizing them. 6. Lead a discussin emplying HR cncepts and terms. 7. Recgnize and differentiate between the 3 HR dmains: HRM, WLP, and HRA. 8. Assess, discuss, and classify each HR dmain and its functinal areas. 9. Understand the rles and cmpetencies in HR. 10. Examine hw HR prfessinals address the needs f the wrkfrce. 11. Summarize the majr target HR results prductivity, quality, innvatin, fulfillment, and readiness fr change. 12. Read a survey f literature t gain a brad awareness f the field f HR.

Supplemental Reading Materials/Case Studies (facilitatr s ptin and chice). Preparatin and Assignments The accelerated pace f this curse requires the student t assume initiative in mastering the cntent and cmpleting the assignments befre each class sessin. The successful class integrates the text cncepts and readings with the knwledge, insight and experience f each participant. The end gal is an enlightened participant and a fulfilling grup experience. This mdule is designed t be the guide and academic standard fr the curse. Individual facilitatrs may deviate frm suggested assignments and weight f grading scheme as they interpret curse integrity. Facilitatrs may distribute a curse syllabus in the first class sessin that will indicate any additins, deletins r mdificatins frm this mdule. Please nte that with 3 5 chapters f reading required per class, there may nt be time t cmplete all the activities utlined in the mdule. Sme cases and/r exercises may be substituted with mre pertinent materials by the facilitatr. Assignment revisins fr imprvement and mastery may be permitted by the curse facilitatr. Details regarding revisin submissins will be prvided by yur facilitatr. Assignments and Wrklad: The class will meet nly nce a week, fr 4 hurs at a time. This accelerated pace requires that students take a cnsiderable amunt f respnsibility fr their wn learning utcmes. While in class, students are expected t actively participate in discussins and grup activities. Outside f class, students shuld plan n allwing a minimum f 12 hurs per week fr study and cmpletin f hmewrk assignments and prjects. Written Assignments: Written assignments are an imprtant cmpnent f this and ther UCAP curses. A variety f resurces are available t assist yu in develping effective cllege writing. Expectatins, scheduling, and specific guidelines fr each written assignment will be discussed by yur facilitatr during the first night f class. Absences and Late Assignments: Because f the accelerated nature f this prgram, attendance is mandatry. If an absence is unavidable, the facilitatr shuld be advised prir t class. If the absence is excused, arrangements may be made at that time fr make up assignments, if apprpriate. Hwever, this will be slely at the

3 discretin f the facilitatr. If an absence ccurs n a test day, the test must be made up within seven days. All late assignments will receive an autmatic letter grade reductin. N assignment will be accepted mre than seven days after the riginal due date. Suggested Grading Criteria Yur perfrmance will be evaluated as fllws: In class grup activities and exercises = 10% Grup prject and presentatin = 15% Class Participatin (attendance + value added in class interactins) = 15% Research paper and ral pwer pint presentatin= 20% Hmewrk papers and assignments n text readings = 25% 1 exam = 15% TOTAL = 100% Assignment Details This curse is reading and writing intensive. Cncept/cntent intrductin and reinfrcement activities/strategies will be emplyed. Frmative and summative methds fr student learning assessment will be utilized. In this curse, learners will cmplete fur types f assignments designed t (a) meet the needs f varius learning styles; (b) prmte reflectin and critical thinking; and (c) demnstrate individual and grup perfrmance: 1. Weekly Hmewrk and assignments n readings 2. Research paper/ral presentatin 3. Grup prject and presentatin 4. Class participatin dialgue, discussin, and activities Scring guides and rubrics may be prvided t learners by the curse facilitatr. ***Nte t students: T review assignments fr each individual week see pages 5,7,9,11,and 13 in this mdule. 4 Guided nte taking: The purpse f this assignment is t ensure classrm readiness, understanding and engagement. Using weekly class sessin bjectives, guided nte taking centers the mind n the meaning f learning in a given curse r class sessin. Writing ntes has a direct cgnitive impact and aids with infrmatin retentin and applicatin. This assignment requires students t write a respnse t each bjective presented in the mdule by class sessin. Respnses shuld be paraphrased summaries f material fund in the textbk as well as summaries f yur understanding. Citatins are required page numbers shuld be nted. Respnses shuld be written in cmplete sentences and in shrt answer/brief paragraph frmat. Specific details abut the frmat f this submissin will be determined by the facilitatr (hardcpy r electrnic submissin). All late papers will be graded n higher than a C. 2. Research Paper and Oral Presentatin 20% Students will chse a research tpic t explre using a detailed prcess prvided by the facilitatr. Student led ral presentatins f the tpic will cnsist f a minute Pwer Pint slide prductin and a guided discussin/questin answer sessin. Facilitatrs will prvide a mre detailed descriptin and utline f this assignment based n instructinal preferences and techniques. Oral presentatins ccur during class sessins fur and five. 3. Grup Prject and Presentatin 15% Grups will be determined and rganized the first night f class. The purpse f this assignment is t explre an aspect f the field f HR using the cncepts and tls learned in the class. Using infrmatin frm the text, readings, and class sessins, each grup will create a discussin fr the class t enjy and learn frm. Grup prject presentatins ccur during class sessin five. Assessment f grup prject/research paper ral presentatins Assessment f grup/individual ral presentatins will be based n: a. Speaking skills: clear/understandable, vlume, pace, eye cntact with grup b. Clearly and effectively summarizing the tpic/issue c. Incrprating apprpriate learned cncepts and theries frm the assigned text and classrm learning in identifying prblem, situatin analysis and prblem slving d. Effectively invlving the class in discussin leading t learning e. Taking part in dialgues f classmates will be included in the Class Participatin grade (15%). Presentatins may be vide taped fr use in the Cllege and Business Department accreditatin and assessment f student learning prcess. In additin t a scring rubric r grading guide that may be prvided by the facilitatr, presentatin evaluatins will be based n six factrs: a. The clarity and articulatin f the specific tpic yu identified and analyzed. b. The caliber f yur analysis f the research tpic and yur demnstrated ability t use, discuss and apply curse cncepts c. The depth and practicality f assessment, degree f detail and specificity. d. The degree f preparatin, prfessinalism, energy, enthusiasm, and skills demnstrated in delivering yur presentatin. e. Yur answers t the questins psed by the class hw well yu defend and supprt yur wrk and field recmmendatins during the Q&A sessin. f. The quality f yur PwerPint slides.

5 A general assessment f this assignment is utlined at the end f the mdule. Students are expected t present their analysis cllabratively in a grup frmat emplying Pwer Pint sftware. Expected level f mastery fr Pwer Pint use in this curse is abve average. A scring rubric r expectatin guide fr this aspect f the assignment will be prvided by the facilitatr. In additin, grup members will rate each ther s perfrmance as specified n the Peer Evaluatin handut (at the end f this mdule). Peer Evaluatin Cmpletin will cunt as 5% f the grade fr this assignment. 4. Class participatin dialgue, discussin, and activities Class participatin includes dialgue, discussin, and activities in class, nline, and during grup wrk. Generally speaking, this piece f the grade is abut all f us being present t the class s that we can make the mst f the learning situatin.
