3 BACKGROUND: A Senior CAE Project Engineer - Crash & Optimisation Analyst position, is available in the Virtual Engineering Centre of Liverpool University. The Virtual Engineering Centre (VEC) was established in 2010 with a remit to support the Northwest aerospace sector and wider industry by providing a focal point for leading and emergent virtual engineering technology, research and expertise. The VEC is a University of Liverpool, School of Engineering-led project, and was catalysed through funding from European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) and North West Development Agency (NWDA). The VEC is now a leading technology innovation centre for engineering development using Virtual Engineering technologies and expertise. The VEC is a centre of excellence offering technology development, research, training and knowledge transfer through the adoption and application of advanced modelling, simulation and 3D immersive visualisation in support of product design and manufacturing innovation to drive global competitiveness. Located on the Science and Technologies Facilities Council s (STFC) Daresbury Campus, the VEC provides support to organisations of all sizes and across a wide range of sectors to develop and integrate virtual prototypes within their existing processes. The Centre provides a range of clients with a cost-effective way of capturing customer requirements and presenting future options; lowering the cost of new development programmes through maximising 'right-firsttime' potential; accelerating speed to market and eliminating risks throughout the product life-cycle. You will be motivated and able to contribute to the development of capability in Virtual Engineering and support the growth of the Centre through offering technical expertise and guidance to the VEC s Virtual Test and Engineering Reliability Team.. You should have relevant experience in: The field of virtual engineering (at PhD level) with particular emphasis on virtual test of ground vehicles and/or aircraft, advanced optimisation and the use of immersive virtual environments. Specific computer-aided engineering, including, FEA, CAD, multi-body simulation, optimisation and multi-physics solutions The use of multi-core clusters Crash/safety analysis THE ROLE: You will be innovative with an interest in applying your research skills to a challenging project this will require daily decision making in terms of determining the best approaches to solve a particular research problem. You will be expected to play a full role in providing technical expertise to the group and managing new and innovative research themes, including taking part in strategic research discussions and the identification of Page 3 of 6

4 new ideas and concepts. You will deploy your scientific expertise to troubleshoot commercial contracts and research programmes that have reached critical points, and to explore and recommend new research directions. You will also take responsibility for identifying new research opportunities and ensuring that these opportunities are exploited e.g., by carrying out initial feasibility studies, setting up collaborations and drafting research proposals to generate initial funding. There will be a responsibility to liaise with academic staff, postdoctoral research workers, research students and members of the Hartree Centre commercial teams. You will take responsibility for: Management of external collaborations and collaborative research projects Management and delivery of commercial programmes of work Advancement of the VEC s capabilities and knowledge of emerging CAE toolkits and approaches Introducing advanced numerical and modelling techniques to the team. Training of staff in new approaches and software. DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES: You will be a core part of the Virtual Test & Engineering Reliability (VT&ER) Team at the VEC (reporting to the VT&ER Team Leader) with the following duties and responsibilities: Development of research objectives, projects and proposals Identify areas for research, develop new research methods and extend the VEC s research and product portfolio Technical management of VEC key industrial clients Management of individual or collaborative research projects Identification of sources of funding and contributing to the process of securing funds, e.g. generate collaborative research income, obtain consultancy projects, or build relationships for future activities Contribution to team business plans and strategies Provide technical leadership and guidance for a team of researchers and technical staff, engaged in a range of activities. Including the planning and use of resources to support development and implementation of business plans Routinely communicate complex and conceptual ideas to those with limited knowledge and understanding as well as to peers using high level skills and a range of media Develop ideas for application of research outcomes from academic colleagues within the University of Liverpool and other partners (e.g. STFC) Writing or contributing to publications Regular liaison with members of the VEC and Hartree Centre commercial teams Routinely update knowledge in Virtual Engineering related fields Make presentations at conferences or exhibit work in other appropriate events Assess, interpret and evaluate outcomes of research and translate to solutions for business Resolve problems of meeting research objectives and project deadlines Page 4 of 6
