1 YEAR 7 SPANISH PERIODS: PREP: 3 x 35 mins per week. 1 x 30 minutes per week. The pupils start Spanish in Year 7 and continue on into Year 8. At the end of Year 6, pupils are given the choice of studying either Spanish or Latin in Year 7. The aim of the course is to enable pupils to have a basic grasp of Spanish, the emphasis being on the four skills: speaking, listening, reading and writing. Pupils will have the opportunity to correspond with Spanish pen pals and also to learn about Spain and other Spanish-speaking countries. CORE COURSE: Mira! (Heinemann), consisting of Teacher s book, pupil text book, Mira Internet link, work book and CDs and Flashcards. Other resources used are: Es Espanol (Brilliant Publications), Espanol Songs Workbook, La Tienda de Luis DVD (Channel 4), BBC La Vida Loca and apps on the Ipad such as Duolingo, which practises all 4 skills and imovie, which is good for role play practice in groups. Mira is fully differentiated. Assessment is linked to NC Levels 1 5. Pupils will sit Common Entrance, either Level 1 or 2, at the end of Year 8. TOPICS: Module 1 Vamos! Basics: pronunciation, grammar, greetings and goodbyes, conversational questions and answers, numbers, months. Module 2 En el Instituto - Talking about school subjects, verbs, adjectives, snacks, eating and drinking. Module 3 Mi Familia Talking about family and pets, possessive adjectives, counting to 100, talking about appearance and character, verb ser (to be). Looking at adjective agreements.

2 Module 4 En Casa - Talking about where you live, using verbs vivir (to live) and estar (to be) for locations, talking about rooms in the home, recognising ar, er and ir verbs, using 3 rd person of verb, prepositions, talking about what you do in your room, names of countries. Module 5 El Tiempo Libre - saying what you do in your free time, using salir (to go out) and hacer (to do), telling the time, verb ir (to go), talking about sports using jugar, also using me gusta (I like) and the infinitive. Starting verb conjugations of regular and some irregular verbs. Module 6 En la Ciudad - Describing your town, building longer sentences, using porque (because) and pero (but), asking about places in town. Using hay to say what there is, making and responding to invitations, using querer (to want), talking about the weather, using cuando (when), using two tenses together, saying what you do in town. ACTIVITIES: The aim of the course is to try to ensure that pupils are confident speakers at a basic level of Spanish, focusing on learning correct pronunciation and accent. We also aim to develop basic listening and reading comprehension skills as well as writing simple sentences on specific topics. In class, pupils are given the opportunity to hear Spanish from the teacher, their ipads, CDs and other pupils in role-play. They watch and listen to material on their ipads and DVDs. They practise structured dialogues in class sometimes on their ipads in pairs and in groups. They also communicate with their pen pals in Spain. There are cross-curricular links; there is the Mira internet link to the course which is used in the classroom and can be used individually in ICT; There are many useful ways of practising skills on the ipads, especially with the Spanish keyboard for writing practice and possibilities of recording and playing back for speaking and listening practice.

3 YEAR 8 SPANISH PERIODS: PREP: 3 x 35 mins per week. 1 x 30 minutes per week. The course follows on from the Year 7 course and aims to prepare pupils for Common Entrance Spanish, level 1 or 2. The emphasis is on further developing the four skills: Speaking, Listening, Reading and Writing. There will also be a strong focus on new vocabulary and grammar which is introduced with the various topics which are to be covered on the course (listed further on). CORE COURSE: Mira 2! (Heinemann) Completing the text. Various resources to cover all of the CE topics. Other resources used are: Mira interactive programmes on the internet. Internet linked Spanish Dictionaries (Usbourne) La Tienda de Luis and Top en Espanol (BBC and Channel 4 DVDs), Que Tal! (Spanish magazine for schools), Conversation Practice with Spanish Assistant El Gran Juego de los Verbos ( Eli Verb Game). La Vida Loca (BBC educational series) Topical Spanish films COMMON ENTRANCE: CE requires pupils to: orally carry out role-plays and speak about a prepared topic; in addition, pupils must answer listening and reading comprehension questions and write creatively; this includes gap-filling, sentences based on a picture or written stimulus and letters.

Activities include: listening comprehension for gist or detail; studying of authentic-style texts and practice in writing similar texts, pair work and role-plays; creation of own dialogues; describing pictures; learning vocabulary and phrases; individual work on the computers using the interactive Mira; correspondence with pen pals in Spain; discussion; games; songs; surveys; poems; authentic magazines, videos; use of dictionary; Ipads for practice of all skills, especially writing with the Spanish keyboard. Useful apps include Duolingo for independent work and imovie for role play practice in groups.
