Course Description and Objectives This is a second year course designed to review and expand your knowledge of the Spanish grammar and Hispanic culture through intensive oral and written practice. The course will be conducted primarily in Spanish. III.Course Policies A) Attendance & Participation 1. Attendance is extremely important. You may miss up to 3 classes during the semester. 3 tardies will count as one absence. If you play a sport or have some serious illness that causes you to go over the limit, please see me ASAP. 2. During Class Cell Phones- will be in the OFF position before student enters the classroom. Ear Phones- may not be worn in class and must be removed from sight before class begins. Laptops- may only be used with the permission of the instructor. This is not a course based on laptop use. It is based on conversation and human contact. Late arrivals / Early Departures- without explanation and permission are considered unexcused absences. Three late arrivals (+5 minutes) will count as one absence. Leaving and Returning during class is not permitted- except in the most serious cases. (Speak with me.) Visit the restroom before class begins. Bring tissues with you to class if you are congested.

2 3. Please use Spanish in the classroom. Avoiding Spanish will have a negative impact on your participation grade. How correctly you speak is not the most important thing, but your effort and you attitude will go a long way. Basic Phrases: Gracias = thank you De nada = you re welcome Cuándo es? When is Dónde está? Where is..? (No) comprendo = I (don t) understand Cómo se dice? How do I say? Sabes..? Do you know? Puedo? May I? Tengo un problema = I have a problem Puedes explicar/ repetir/ ayudar? = Can you explain,/repeat/ help? Each day you will be given an attendance/ participation grade. A= Speaks in Spanish with good command of grammar and vocabulary; very well prepared for class; volunteers without being called on B= Speaks in Spanish, some noticeable errors but generally prepared for class. Volunteers without being called on C= Speaks in Spanish but only when called on and/ or with significant errors OR speaks Spanish and participates often but uses English without permission. D= Little attempt to participate, not prepared to participate OR sometimes prepared but uses English without permission F = Present in class but unwilling and/ or unprepared to participate in any language 0 = Absent from class 4) You may not miss scheduled compositions, quizzes, and tests. Try to find out if your absence will be excused before you miss. If your missed work is unexcused you will face a 10 point deduction per day until your work is turned in or completed. B) Homework (ONLINE REFERENCE TOOLS AVAILABLE TO HELP) You should prepare written exercises from the Quia website almost every night. Often these will preview our next class or review the work from your previous class. They are important because they will help you understand the material and let you know if you do not understand a concept or reading fully. If you know you cannot do an exercise even after you have been to the class where we covered that material, see me. To access these exercises you will need to follow directions online: You may do extra grammar practice and get feedback with exercises on the WWW: 1) and 2)

3 In addition to these written/ computer-generated exercises there will be a formal composition and sentence-writing assignments. For oral practice you will each prepare one skit presentation with classmates using chapter vocabulary and do an individual interview with your instructor at the end of the semester. Your presentations should NOT be read. Content from these presentations will appear on exams. D) Journal You will each keep a journal throughout the semester. It can be a notebook or an online Blog. In it you should have 10 entries worth 10 % of your class grade. Entries will reflect your experiences with Spanish outside the class and may include reviews/reflections on works of art by Hispanic artists (painting, poem, short story, song); transcriptions and/ or commentaries of interviews or conversations in Spanish with a native speaker of Spanish face to face or online with pen pals; reflections on volunteer work experience in the Hispanic community (ie dia de los muertos local celebration); reflection on a film or exhibit you attend in Spanish or related to the Hispanic community; description/ image of recipe from the Hispanic world that you made; description/ image of a cultural site in Spain/ Latin America that you would like to visit and why. Your comments/ reflections should be about 200 words. At least 3 must be written in Spanish. E) Extra Credit You may add one half point to your final course grade for each journal entry you add above the 10 required. There is an anthology of short stories on reserve at Magale for those interested in short stories. F) Honor Code Tests, quizzes, compositions, and extra credit are subject to the terms of the honor code. You may consult classmates and friends on homework assignments but should never copy another s work or have anyone else write for you. You should also not rely on computer translators. Mostly, they won t get you very far anyway. G) Grading Attendance/ Participation 15% Vocab.
