1 Fundraising Ireland background Position specification Chief Executive Officer, Fundraising Ireland Established in 2007, Fundraising Ireland is the association for professional fundraisers in Ireland. We seek to foster excellence in fundraising and to promote the highest ethical standards for the fundraising profession in Ireland. Initially, Fundraising Ireland was formed by a small group of fundraisers to create opportunities for people working in the fundraising industry to come together. The group aimed to create an environment in which fundraisers could network, share their experiences and knowledge, and address the challenges that they encountered as individual fundraisers and as a sector. Our Roots In late 2006, a small group of passionate and experienced fundraising professionals came together to share a common vision. All these individuals had long considered the need for an association for fundraisers in Ireland. Their discussions led to the establishment of Fundraising Ireland in Our Development For the next two years, a voluntary steering group worked to progress the following aims and objectives: 1. Promote best practice in fundraising. 2. Enable fundraisers in Ireland to network. 3. Represent the profession of fundraising in the process of evolving charities and fundraising regulation. From 2007 to 2009, Fundraising Ireland introduced a series of successful events and seminars. During this time, participation and interest in its offerings continued to grow. In March 2009, the National Fundraising Conference was introduced and the same year saw the introduction of the Irish Fundraising Awards. In May 2009, Fundraising Ireland was incorporated as a limited company without share capital and elected its first Board of Directors After two successful events in Croke Park, in 2011 the National Conference moved to the National Convention Centre to accommodate the growing number of delegates and our 2012 Conference had the highest turnout to date, demonstrating the need and appetite for fundraisers to improve their skills and share knowledge and expertise. This year also saw the
2 launch of the first Pre- Conference Reception and Dinner providing an additional opportunity for peer- to- peer networking. Today and Tomorrow Fundraising Ireland has spent the last year refining its strategic plan, working closely with Government and other key stakeholders through the Forum on Philanthropy & Fundraising. We now plan to expand our Executive Team by appointing a CEO and a Director of Education and Training to ensure delivery of an effective education, training and continued professional development programme. We have strong relationships with other key sector organisations in Ireland and we are also the Irish representative at the European Fundraising Association which gives our members access to a host of educational benefits from across Europe. In the last 6 months we have signed off on Ireland s first Certificate and Diploma in Fundraising, with the first Certificate taking place in DCU this September. We have also seen the formal establishment of our first Regional Branch in the West of Ireland. Fundraising Ireland now has over 250 members across the sector and reaches out to a wider network of over 2,000 fundraisers from throughout Ireland. In the months and years ahead, Fundraising Ireland will continue to put fundraisers operating within the not- for- profit sector at the centre of everything we do. Our Mission Fundraising Ireland s mission is to foster excellence in fundraising and to promote best practice across the sector. Fundraising Ireland fulfils this mission by providing members with networking opportunities, events, training, education and the support that they need to maximise their potential. Our Vision Our vision is to ensure that fundraising is recognised as a credible and respected profession and that fundraisers in Ireland are at the forefront of international best practice and standards. Our Philosophy Fundraising Ireland is committed to providing the highest quality services to our members. We are responsive to their needs and strive to exceed expectations. Fundraising Ireland members adhere to a professional code of conduct and standards.
3 Our Core Activities: Seminars & Events: Fundraising Ireland hosts regular training seminars and an annual National Fundraising Conference. These training opportunities expose Ireland s fundraisers to a range of expert speakers from the domestic and international fundraising industry, provide practical advice and guidance on a host of fundraising topics and concerns and help to improve communication and information- sharing across the sector. Fundraising Ireland also hosts the National Fundraising Awards. National Certificate and Diploma in Fundraising: 2011 saw the development of the very first National Certificate and Diploma in Fundraising for Ireland, which Fundraising Ireland has developed in partnership with Professor Adrian Sargeant. The first Certificate programme will be run in September 2012 with the Diploma to follow in mid Priority Areas In order to achieve our Vision we have developed a 3 year strategic plan ( ) and identified four Priority areas of focus for Fundraising Ireland over the next three years. The priority areas are: 1. Support fundraisers to display high levels of ethical standards and practice in fundraising and professional conduct. 2. Improve the standard of education, training and professional development in fundraising. 3. Build a voice for the fundraising sector, creating a fundraising community and meeting its needs. 4. Develop the organisational capability of Fundraising Ireland to facilitate the achievement of the other priorities. Where to from here? Since its inception Fundraising Ireland has been managed by a voluntary Board. For the last two years the Board has been supported by a Business Development Manager and for the last 9 months there has been additional, part- time back- office support. In order to drive the implementation of the strategic plan and meet our ambitious targets Fundraising Ireland now wishes to recruit a Chief Executive Officer to lead the organisation s on- going development. This role has come about thanks to the recent approval of a new three year funding stream CEO Role and responsibilities The successful candidate will be an exceptional communicator that can provide inspirational leadership, strategic guidance and a voice for professional fundraising in Ireland. They will drive organisational growth and manage all day- to- day operations from Fundraising Ireland s Dublin base. While the role is Dublin based, the remit is National, serving professional fundraisers from across the country.
4 The main priorities over the next 12 months: 1. Delivering a first class education programme 2. Growing and diversifying income streams and developing our membership offering 3. Cementing Fundraising Ireland s role as the national voice on all aspects of fundraising (positioning Fundraising Ireland nationally and internationally, with members, funders and partner organisations) Key Accountabilities: 1. Develop and diversify income streams, putting Fundraising Ireland on continued stable financial footing 2. Form a strong, effective and open working relationship with the Chair, Board, funders, members and staff and work in partnership with them to grow and sustain the organisation 3. Position Fundraising Ireland as the central body representing fundraisers in Ireland 4. Manage the organisation, provide strategic direction and lead change 5. Develop and nurture relationships with all Fundraising Ireland regional branches 6. Help to position fundraising as a profession with the highest standards and integrity 7. Represent Fundraising Ireland at a national & international Level and speak on behalf of Fundraising Ireland to the media, Government, funders and other external organisations 8. Oversee the National Conference and other Fundraising Ireland events 9. Foster transparency and accountability on governance and all financial reporting 10. Ensure a maximum return on investment from funds earned and raised 11. Ensure Fundraising Ireland focuses on it memorandum and articles of association when making all major decisions 12. Oversee the implementation, growth and profitability of the learning programme 13. Review all internal processes and staff skills to ensure maximum efficiencies 14. Develop & maintain strong partnerships which may include relationships with the ICTR, MyLegacy.ie, the Institute of Fundraising in the UK, the European Fundraising Association and others 15. Develop & enhance the membership offering and benefits to existing members and grow member numbers 16. Attend all Board meetings 17. Report progress to the Board on a quarterly basis 18. Grow Fundraising Ireland in line with its strategic plan*. 19. Shape and deliver a business plan covering the next three years *Candidates who are shortlisted will receive a copy of this strategy for review in advance of interviews. Minimum requirements The successful candidate will have: 1. Third level qualification 2. A strong passion for and commitment to the fundraising profession and an ability to communicate the role of Fundraising Ireland
5 3. A successful track record as either a CEO or Senior Manager within an organisation with many stakeholders / branches 4. A minimum of seven years experience of delivering outstanding performance at a senior management level 5. Demonstrable track record of converting the corporate vision into tangible outcomes 6. Proven ability to deliver ambitious financial goals within agreed budgets and timelines Desirable 1. Fundraising experience or exposure to fundraising at a senior level 2. Experience of business start- up 3. Experience of delivering outcomes through working with partners 4. A successful track record on dealing with multiple stakeholders, members or branches 5. Ability to manage various relationships at all levels. 6. A track record of building and maintaining positive and open relationships with colleagues and external stakeholders 7. Proven track record of managing change 8. Exposure to advocacy 9. Knowledge of the Irish non- profit marketplace 10. Customer facing / member focused experience Reports to Fundraising Ireland Board of Directors Direct Reports 1. Director of Education and Training (Hire late 2012) 2. Business Development Manager Location 1. Dublin City Centre Terms and conditions, working hours and holidays This position is a 3 year fixed term contract. Full time, 9am 5.30pm with some requirement to work outside office hours when necessary and 23 days holiday. Some international travel will be required from time to time. Salary Circa 80,000
