3 Before reading this manual For your safety This manual contains important information for safely and correctly using this product. Carefully read the manual before using this product. Pay particular attention to the accompanying manual "Safety Notes and Regulations" and ensure these safety notes are understood before using the product. Keep this manual and the manual "Safety Notes and Regulations" in a safe place for easy reference while using this product. Radio interference This product is a "Class A" ITE (Information Technology Equipment). In a domestic environment this product may cause radio interference, in which case the user may be required to take appropriate measures. VCCI-A Aluminum electrolytic capacitors The aluminum electrolytic capacitors used in the product's printed circuit board assemblies and in the mouse and keyboard are limited-life components. Use of these components beyond their operating life may result in electrolyte leakage or depletion, potentially causing emission of foul odor or smoke. As a guideline, in a normal office environment (25 C) operating life is not expected to be reached within the maintenance support period (5 years). However, operating life may be reached more quickly if, for example, the product is used in a hot environment. The customer shall bear the cost of replacing replaceable components which have exceeded their operating life. Note that these are only guidelines, and do not constitute a guarantee of trouble-free operation during the maintenance support period. High safety use This product has been designed and manufactured for general uses such as general office use, personal use, domestic use and normal industrial use. It has not been designed or manufactured for uses which demand an extremely high level of safety and carry a direct and serious risk to life or body if such safety cannot be ensured. 9 1 Introduction The PRIMERGY BX620 S6 dual-socket server blade constitutes the sixth generation of extremely compact and powerful BX620 server blades. It provides a wide range of current technologies such as the latest generation of multi-core processors, DDR3 memory modules with powerful 3-channel architecture per CPU, modular hard disk controller configuration, and 2.5-inch SAS/SATA HDD/SSD modules. The three available storage module variants allow SAS or SATA HDD/SSD configurations for different usage scenarios. The configuration options range from the low-cost platform with SATA hard disks up to the high-end platform with SAS hard disks and a SAS storage module with RAID5 and Cache/iTBBU. As an option, the communications interfaces can be extended by two Fibre Channel channels or two additional Ethernet channels. 1.1 Concept and target groups of this manual This options guide shows you how to expand and upgrade your server. 11 Extensions and upgrades 1.3 Extensions and upgrades Second processor If only one processor is installed in your server blade, you can upgrade it to include a second one. You may only use processors of the same type in the server blade. The second processor must have the same clock frequency as the first. Upgrading the memory The server blade offers 6 DDR3 DIMM slots per CPU (organized in 2 banks and 3 channels). All 12 main memory slots support RDIMMs (registered DIMMs) and UDIMMs (unbuffered DIMMs). Only memory modules of the same capacity can be installed on the same memory bank. This allows a maximum memory configuration of 24 GB with UDIMMs (capacities: 1 GB and 2 GB) and 192 GB with RDIMMs (capacities: 2 GB, 4 GB, 8 GB, and 16 GB). I A combination of both memory module types is not allowed. Optional I/O module The server blade has one slot for an extension board (daughter card) which can be used to provide two Fibre Channel connections or two additional Ethernet connections. The following I/O modules are available: 4-Gbit Fibre Channel daughter card (PCIe) 1-Gbit Ethernet daughter card (PCIe) To be able to use the additional I/O functionality, at least one FC I/O blade or an Ethernet I/O blade must be installed in slots NET3 and/or NET4 of the BX600 S3 basic unit. For more information, see the operating manual for your basic unit. Storage modules The hard disks are controlled by a storage module (controller) which can be plugged into the system board and which may also have additional functions. The following variants can be used: SAS, SAS/RAID and SAS/PCIe. The PCIe variant allows the installation of low-profile modules. BX620 S6 Options Guide 11
12 Extensions and upgrades Storage modules can be installed/replaced via the front of the server blade without having to remove the housing cover. However, they cannot be replaced while the system is running (non-hot-plug) - the server blade must be switched off. 12 Options Guide BX620 S6

17 2 Procedure V CAUTION! The activities described in this manual must be performed by engineers, service personnel or technical specialists. Equipment repairs must be performed by qualified staff. Any failure to observe the guidelines in this manual, and any unauthorized opening or improper repairs could endanger the user (through electric shock, fire hazards) or damage the equipment. Please note that any unauthorized opening of the device will result in the invalidation of the warranty and exclusion from all liability. First of all please familiarize yourself with the safety instructions in the chapter "Safety instructions" on page 19. Make sure that all the manuals you need (see "Documentation overview" on page 10) are available, printing out the PDF files if necessary. You will definitely need the operating manual for the server blade and the Service Supplement. Shut down the server blade correctly, switch it off and remove it from the basic unit as described in the chapter "Preparation" on page 23. Extend or upgrade your server blade as described in the relevant chapter. I The installation and removal of the hot-plug components is described in the operating manual supplied with the server blade. Close the server blade, place it back in the basic unit and switch on the server blade as described in the chapter "Completion" on page 53. 19 3 Safety instructions I The following safety instructions are also provided in the manual "Safety Notes and Regulations". This device complies with the relevant safety regulations for data processing equipment, including electronic office machines for use in an office environment. If you have any questions as to whether you can set up the device in your particular environment, please contact your sales outlet or our customer service centre. V CAUTION! The actions described in this manual shall be performed by technical specialists. A technical specialist is a person who is trained to install the server blade including hardware and software. Repairs to the device that do not relate to CSS failures shall be performed by service personnel. Please note that unauthorized interference with the system will void the warranty and exempt the manufacturer from all liability. Any failure to observe the guidelines in this manual, and any improper repairs could expose the user to risks (electric shock, energy hazards, fire hazards) or damage the equipment. Before installing/removing internal options to/from the server blade, turn off the server blade, all peripheral devices, and any other connected devices. Also unplug all power cords from the power outlet. Failure to do so can cause electric shock. Before starting up V CAUTION! During installation and before operating the device, observe the instructions on environmental conditions for your device. If the device is brought in from a cold environment, condensation may form both inside and on the outside of the device. Wait until the device has acclimatized to room temperature and is absolutely dry before starting it up. Material damage may be caused to the device if this requirement is not observed. 20 Safety instructions Transport the device only in the original packaging or in packaging that protects it from knocks and jolts. Installation and operation V CAUTION! Read the notes on installation and operation in the operating manual of the BX600 S3 basic unit. When installing the server blade in the basic unit, beware of the energy hazard at the midplane contacts. A short-circuit on these contacts may damage the system. Data cables must be adequately shielded to avoid interference. For the LAN wiring, the requirements according to standards EN and EN /2 apply. The minimum requirement is the use of a protected LAN line of category 5 for 10/100 Mbit/s Ethernet, and/or of category 5e for Gigabit Ethernet. The requirements of the specification ISO/IEC must also be taken into account. Route the cables in such a way that they do not form a potential hazard (tripping) and cannot be damaged. When connecting the device, refer to the relevant notes in the operating manual. Do not connect or disconnect any data transmission cables during a thunderstorm (lightning hazard). Make sure that no objects (such as bracelets or paper clips) or liquids get inside the device (risk of electric shock or short circuit). In emergencies (e.g. damaged casing, control elements or cables, penetration of liquids or foreign bodies), switch off the device immediately, unplug it from the grounded power outlets, and contact your customer service center. Proper operation of the device (in accordance with IEC60950/EN 60950) is only ensured if the casing is completely assembled and the rear covers for the installation openings are in place (electric shock, cooling, fire protection, interference suppression). 20 Options Guide BX620 S6
21 Safety instructions V CAUTION! Install only system extensions that satisfy the requirements and rules governing safety, electromagnetic compatibility, and telecommunications terminal equipment. If you install other extensions, you may damage the system or violate these safety regulations. Information on which system extensions are suitable can be obtained from the customer service center or your sales outlet. The components marked with a warning label (e.g. lightning symbol) may only be opened, removed or exchanged by authorized, qualified personnel, with the exception of the hot-plug/hot-swap components. If you cause a defect on the device by installing or exchanging system extensions, the warranty will be invalidated. You may only set the resolutions and refresh rates specified in the operating manual for your monitor. Otherwise, you may damage the monitor. If you are in any doubt, contact your sales outlet or customer service center. Batteries V CAUTION! Incorrect replacement of batteries may lead to a risk of explosion. The batteries may only be replaced with identical batteries or with a type recommended by the manufacturer. Do not throw batteries into the trash can. Batteries must be disposed of in accordance with local regulations concerning special waste. Replace the lithium battery on the system board in accordance with the instructions in the service supplement for the server blade. All batteries containing pollutants are marked with a symbol (a crossed-out garbage can). In addition, the marking is provided with the chemical symbol of the heavy metal decisive for the classification as a pollutant: BX620 S6 Options Guide 21
22 Safety instructions Cd Cadmium Hg Mercury Pb Lead Modules with Electrostatic-Sensitive Devices Modules with electrostatic-sensitive devices are identified by the following sticker: Figure 2: ESD label When you handle components fitted with ESDs, you must always observe the following points: Switch off the system and remove the power plugs from the power outlets before installing or removing components with ESDs. You must always discharge static build-up (e.g. by touching a grounded object) before working with such components. Any devices or tools that are used must be free of electrostatic charge. Wear a suitable grounding cable that connects you to the external chassis of the system unit. Always hold components with ESDs at the edges or at the points marked green (touch points). Do not touch any connectors or conduction paths on an ESD. Place all the components on a pad which is free of electrostatic charge. 27 5 Processors V CAUTION! Please observe the safety information in the chapter Safety instructions on page 19. Processors are components which are extremely sensitive to electrostatic discharge and must be handled with caution. When you take a processor out of its protective wrapper or out of a socket, place it on an insulated, antistatic surface with the smooth side down. Never slide a processor over a surface. 5.1 Installing a second processor If only one processor is installed in your server blade, you can upgrade it to include a second one. V CAUTION! Always use processors of the same type. All processors must have the same frequency, capacity and organization. For multi-processor operation use a suitable multi-processor operating system. Fix the heat sink by fastening the four premounted screws in diagonally opposite sequence. V CAUTION! Never install a processor without a heat sink! The processor is likely to overheat, which may cause damage to the processor and the system board. Close the server blade, place it in the system unit and switch on the server blade as described in the chapter "Completion" on page Options Guide BX620 S6
33 6 Memory modules V CAUTION! Please observe the safety information in the chapter Safety instructions on page 19. The BX620 S6 server blade offers 6 DDR3 DIMM slots per CPU. These are organized in 2 banks (black versus blue slots, see figure 13) and 3 channels. All 12 main memory slots support RDIMMs (registered DIMMs) and UDIMMs (unbuffered DIMMs). This allows a maximum memory configuration of 24 GB with UDIMMs (capacities: 1 GB and 2 GB) and 192 GB with RDIMMs (capacities 2 GB, 4 GB, 8 GB or 16 GB ). 34 Memory operating modes Independent Channel Mode (maximum memory configuration) The populated memory can be used in full (maximum 192 GB). Mirrored Channel Mode (maximum security) Only the populated memory in the channels A and D (see figure 13 on page 33) can be used (maximum 64 GB). The channels B and E are for failure protection purposes only. They contain the mirrored data from channels A and D. Channels C and F are not used. Performance Channel Mode (high memory configuration with high security) The populated memory of the 6 channels (A - F) can be used completely (max. 192 GB). Spare channel mode (large population and large security) Only the populated memory of the four channels A, B, D and E can be used (max. 128 GB). The channels C and F serve as safeguarding against failure. Spare channel mode is only supported by Intel XEON E/L/X56nn processors. 34 Options Guide BX620 S6

If CPU 2 is installed, at least one DIMM module (DIMM 1D) must be installed. If DIMM modules with different memory capacities are to be installed for a CPU, the modules with the lower memory capacity must be installed nearer to the CPU. The higher the capacity, the further away from the CPU the memory module has to be mounted per channel! BX620 S6 Options Guide 35
36 Upgrading/replacing the main memory 6.2 Upgrading/replacing the main memory Remove the server blade from the basic unit and open it as described in the chapter "Preparation" on page Figure 15: Removing a memory module Flip out the fastening tabs on both sides of the relevant slot (1). Carefully press the memory module into the slot (1) until the fastening tabs on both sides of it engage (2). Close the server blade, place it in the basic unit and switch on the server blade as described in the chapter "Completion" on page Options Guide BX620 S6
37 7 Optional I/O modules You can install an additional I/O module in the PRIMERGY BX620 S6 server blade. For this purpose, the server blade has a special slot for an extension board (daughter card) (see figure 19 on page 40). The following I/O daughter cards are available for the BX620 S6 server blade: 4-Gbit Fibre Channel daughter card (PCIe) 1-Gbit Ethernet daughter card (PCIe) I To be able to use the additional I/O functionality, at least one FC I/O blade or an Ethernet I/O blade must be installed in slots NET3 and/or NET4 of the BX600 S3 basic unit. For further information on I/O blades, see the operating manual for your basic unit. It is not possible to install a combination of Fibre Channel I/O blades and Ethernet I/O blades in slots NET3 and NET4 of the basic unit. BX620 S6 Options Guide 37
38 4-Gbit Fibre Channel daughter card (PCIe) Figure 17: 4-Gbit Fibre Channel daughter card (PCIe) The 4-Gbit FC daughter card (PCIe) provides two independent serial 1/2/4- Gbit/s FC ports. It is fitted with an Emulex chip and supports multiple FC storage subsystems of the corresponding versions. I The 4-Gbit FC daughter card can only be used in combination with the 4/4-Gbit FC switch blade. 43 8 Storage modules In the BX620 S6 server blade, the hard disk controller is mounted on a replaceable storage module which can be installed and removed on the front of the server blade without having to take off the housing cover. The following figure shows the position of the storage module in the open server blade. You must switch off the server blade before replacing the storage module (non-hot-plug). All variants of the storage module are installed and removed in the same way. This section shows the required steps. Removal 1 1 Undo the two screws (1) which fasten the storage module to the frame of the server blade.
