Pay particular attention to the accompanying manual "Safety Notes and Regulations" and ensure these safety notes are understood before using the product. Keep this manual and the manual "Safety Notes and Regulations" in a safe place for easy reference while using this product. Radio interference This product is a "Class A" ITE (Information Technology Equipment). In a domestic environment this product may cause radio interference, in which case the user may be required to take appropriate measures. VCCI-A Aluminum electrolytic capacitors The aluminum electrolytic capacitors used in the product's printed circuit board assemblies and in the mouse and keyboard are limited-life components. Use of these components beyond their operating life may result in electrolyte leakage or depletion, potentially causing emission of foul odor or smoke. As a guideline, in a normal office environment (25 C) operating life is not expected to be reached within the maintenance support period (5 years). However, operating life may be reached more quickly if, for example, the product is used in a hot environment. The customer shall bear the cost of replacing replaceable components which have exceeded their operating life. Note that these are only guidelines, and do not constitute a guarantee of trouble-free operation during the maintenance support period. High safety use This product has been designed and manufactured to be used in commercial and/or industrial areas as a server. When used as visual display workplace, it must not be placed in the direct field of view to avoid incommoding reflections (applies only to TX server systems). The device has not been designed or manufactured for uses which demand an extremely high level of safety and carry a direct and serious risk of life or body if such safety cannot be assured. 4 These uses include control of nuclear reactions in nuclear power plants, automatic airplane flight control, air traffic control, traffic control in mass transport systems, medical devices for life support, and missile guidance control in weapons systems (hereafter, "high safety use"). 9 1 Preface The PRIMERGY SX960 S1 storage blade is used as a storage subsystem for the PRIMERGY BX400 S1 and BX900 S1/BX900 S2 blade server. The storage blade comes with 10 bays for 2.5-inch SAS or SATA HDD/SSD modules and occupies two bays in the system unit. Up to two SX960 S1 storage blades can be installed per BX400 S1 and BX900 S1/BX900 S2 system unit. Figure 1: PRIMERGY SX960 S1 storage blade SX960 S1 Operating Manual 9
10 Preface 1.1 Concept and target groups for this manual This operating manual describes how to install, set up and operate your storage blade. It is intended for those responsible for installing the hardware and ensuring that the system runs smoothly. This operating manual contains all the information you need to put your PRIMERGY SX960 S1 storage blade into operation. Please refer to the configurator for details. 15 2 Important notes This chapter provides safety instructions which you must observe when handling your storage blade. 2.1 Safety instructions I The following safety instructions are also provided in the manual "Safety Notes and Regulations" or " 安 全 上 のご 注 意 ". This device meets the relevant safety regulations for IT equipment. If you have any questions about whether you can install the storage blade in the intended environment, please contact your sales outlet or our customer service team. V CAUTION! The actions described in this manual should only be performed by technical specialists. Equipment repairs should only be performed by service staff. Any failure to observe the guidelines in this manual, and any unauthorized opening or improper repairs could expose the user to risks (electric shock, fire hazards) or damage the equipment. Please note that any unauthorized opening of the storage blade will void the warranty and exempt the manufacturer from all liability. During installation and before operating the device, observe the instructions on environmental conditions for your device (see section "Technical data" on page 12) If the storage blade has been moved from a cold environment, condensation may form both inside and on the outside of the machine. Wait until the storage blade has acclimatized to room temperature and is absolutely dry before starting it up. Material damage may be caused to the device if this requirement is not met. 16 Important notes V CAUTION! Only transport the device in its original packaging or in suitable packaging which protects it from knocks and jolts. For the Japanese market, transporting the device with ORIGINAL PACKAGING is not applied. Check that the rated voltage specified on the device's ID plate is the same as the local line voltage. Never connect or disconnect data transmission lines during a storm (lightning hazard). Make sure that no objects (e.g. bracelets or paper clips) fall into or liquids spill into the device (risk of electric shock or short circuit). Note that proper operation of the system (in accordance with IEC /DIN EN ) is guaranteed only if slot covers are installed on all vacant slots and/or dummies on all vacant bays and the housing cover is fitted (cooling, fire protection, RFI suppression). 16 Operating Manual SX960 S1
17 Important notes 2.2 Electrostatic sensitive device label Modules with electrostatic-sensitive components Systems and components that might be damaged by electrostatic discharge (ESD) are marked with the following label: Figure 2: ESD label When you handle components fitted with ESDs, you must observe the following points under all circumstances: Remove the power plug before installing or removing components containing ESDs. You must always discharge yourself of static charges (e.g. by touching a grounded object) before working. The equipment and tools you use must be free of static charges. Only touch the components at the positions highlighted in green (touch points). Do not touch any exposed pins or conductors on a component. Use a grounding cable designed for this purpose to connect yourself to the system unit as you install components. Place all components on a static-safe base. I You will find a detailed description for handling ESD components in the relevant European or international standards (DIN EN , ANSI/ESD S20.20). SX960 S1 Operating Manual 17
18 Important notes 2.3 FCC Class A Compliance Statement If there is an FCC statement on the device, it applies to the products covered in this manual, unless otherwise specified herein. The statement for other products will appear in the accompanying documentation. NOTE: This equipment has been tested and found to comply with the limits for a "Class A" digital device, pursuant to Part 15 of the FCC rules and meets all requirements of the Canadian Interference-Causing Equipment Standard ICES-003 for digital apparatus. These limits are designed to provide reasonable protection against harmful interference in a residential installation. This equipment generates, uses and can radiate radio frequency energy and, if not installed and used in strict accordance with the instructions, may cause harmful interference to radio communications. However, there is no warranty that interference will not occur in a particular installation. If this equipment does cause harmful interference to radio or television reception, which can be determined by turning the equipment off and on, the user is encouraged to try to correct the interference by one or more of the following measures: Reorient or relocate the receiving antenna. Increase the separation between equipment and the receiver. Connect the equipment into an outlet on a circuit different from that to which the receiver is connected. Consult the dealer or an experienced radio/tv technician for help. Fujitsu is not responsible for any radio or television interference caused by unauthorized modifications of this equipment or the substitution or attachment of connecting cables and equipment other than those specified by Fujitsu. The correction of interferences caused by such unauthorized modification, substitution or attachment will be the responsibility of the user. The use of shielded I/O cables is required when connecting this equipment to any and all optional peripheral or host devices. Failure to do so may violate FCC and ICES rules. 19 Important notes 2.4 RFI suppression All other equipment which is connected to this product must also have radio noise suppression in accordance with EC Guideline 89/336/EEC. Products which meet this requirement are accompanied by a certificate to that effect issued by the manufacturer and/or bear the CE mark. Products which do not meet this requirement may be operated only with the special permission of the BZT (Bundesamt für Zulassungen in der Telekommunikation). 2.5 Notes on transportation I Only transport the storage blade in its original packaging or in suitable packaging which protects it from knocks and jolts. For the Japanese market, transporting the device with ORIGINAL PACKAGING is not applied. Do not unpack the storage blade until it is at its installation location. SX960 S1 Operating Manual 19

21 3 Installation V CAUTION! Follow the safety instructions in chapter "Important notes" on page 15. The storage blade should not be subjected to any extreme environmental conditions (see section "Technical data" on page 12). Protect the storage blade from dust, humidity and heat. Make sure that the storage blade is acclimatized for the time indicated in this table before putting it into operation. Temperature difference ( C) Minimum acclimatization time (hours) Table 1: Acclimatization time In table "Acclimatization time", the temperature difference refers to the difference between the operating environment temperature and the temperature to which the storage blade was exposed previously (outside, transport or storage temperature). 22 Installation 3.1 Installation procedure Unpacking a storage blade (see the next section on this page). Installing a storage blade in the system unit (see section "Installing/removing a storage blade in/from the system unit" on page 23). Putting a storage blade into operation (see section "Putting the storage blade into operation" on page 34 in the chapter "Installation and operation"). 3.2 Unpacking a storage blade V CAUTION! Follow the safety instructions in chapter "Important notes" on page 15. Do not unpack the storage blade until it is at its installation location. You should retain the original packaging of the storage blade for possible further transport. Transport the storage blade to the place where you want to set it up. Unpack all individual parts. Keep the original packaging in case you want to transport the storage blade again (applies only to EMEA market). Check the delivery for any damage during transport. Check whether the items delivered match the details on the delivery note. The product name and serial number of the product can be found on the ID card (see section "Indicators on the storage blade" on page 31). Notify your supplier immediately should you discover that the items delivered do not correspond to the delivery note. 22 Operating Manual SX960 S1
23 Installation 3.3 Installing/removing a storage blade in/from the system unit V CAUTION! Fitting rules Follow the safety instructions in chapter "Important notes" on page 15. A mix of SAS and SATA drives within the SX960 S1 storage blade is not allowed. A maximum of two SX960 S1 storage blades can be installed into a system unit (BX400 S1 and BX900 S1/BX900 S2). Only slots 2&3 and slots 6&7 or slots 4&5 of a BX400 S1 system unit can be fitted with SX960 S1 storage blades. They provide the server blade in the adjacent slot to the left with additional disk space (see figure 3). They provide the server blade in the adjacent slot to the left with additional disk space (see figure 4). 25 Installation Removing the dummy blades Any unused slots on the front of the system unit are fitted with appropriate dummy blades to comply with electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) regulations and to ensure sufficient cooling of the system components. The power supply unit slots on the back do not necessarily have to be populated. To add a SX960 S1 storage blade, you first have to remove two dummy blades from the relevant slots. 26 Installation V CAUTION! Keep the dummy blade(s) for future use. If you remove a storage blade or a server blade and do not replace it with a new one, you must reinstall the dummy blade(s) due to cooling, to comply with EMC regulations, and to protect against fire. Installing the dummy blades Slide each dummy blade with the release lever down into the empty slot until it clicks into place. Installing the storage blade The SX960 S1 storage blade can be installed during operation and is recognized by the management blade. You must restart the related server blade to enable the storage blade to communicate with the server blade, see section "Putting the storage blade into operation" on page 34. V CAUTION! Follow the safety instructions and information in section "Electrostatic sensitive device label" on page 17. I Make sure the storage blade is installed the correct way round. 29 Installation Removing the storage blade To remove the storage blade, you must first switch off the related server blade(s). Switch the server blade off: either using the On/Off button on the server blade or using the Web interface of the management blade (see the user interface description in the manual "ServerView Management Blade S1" for PRIMERGY BX400 Blade Server Systems respectively for PRIMERGY BX900 Blade Server Systems). Undo the locking mechanism of the release lever. Open the release lever. Pull the storage blade out of the slot. V CAUTION! If you have removed a storage blade and have not replaced it with a new one, you must install a dummy module in the empty slot. SX960 S1 Operating Manual 29

31 4 Operation 4.1 Control and display elements Indicators on the storage blade Figure 8: Indicators on the storage blade 1 ID card You can pull out the ID card (see figure 8 above) as far as it will go and push it back in again. The ID card contains various system information, such as product name, serial number and order number. 2 Power indicator (green) Lights up: the left server blade is switched on Does not light: the left server blade is switched off SX960 S1 Operating Manual 31
32 Operation 3 ID indicator (blue) Lights up blue when the system has been selected by pressing the ID button (4). To deactivate, press the ID button again. The ID indicator can also be activated via the Management Blade Web interface and the ServerView Operations Manager and the irmc Web interface and its status is reported to the ServerView Operations Manager and the irmc. 4 ID button When the ID button is pressed, the ID indicator (3) lights up. 32 Operating Manual SX960 S1

34 Operation 4.2 Putting the storage blade into operation The SX960 S1 storage blade can be installed during operation and is recognized by the management blade. You must restart the related server blade to enable the storage blade to communicate with the server blade. Make sure that the storage blade is inserted correctly in the system unit (see section "Installing/removing a storage blade in/from the system unit" on page 23). There are two ways of restarting the server blade related to the storage blade: By pressing the On/Off button on the control panel of the server blade Via the Web interface of the management blade (see the user interface description in the manual "ServerView Management Blade S1" for PRIMERGY BX400 Blade Server Systems respectively for PRIMERGY BX900 Blade Server Systems). As soon as the related server blades are in operation, the storage blade's power indicator lights up green. After that, configure the drives of the storage blade with the ServerView RAID Manager. You will find further information in the "PRIMERGY ServerView Suite RAID Management" manual. 34 Operating Manual SX960 S1
35 5 Hot-plug components This chapter describes how to replace or add hot-plug components in the SX960 S1 storage blade. I The HDD/SSD modules are the only hot-plug components within the SX960 S1 storage blade. 5.1 Hot-plug drives The drives which can be ordered for the storage blade SX960 S1 are supplied already mounted in an installation frame so that defective drives can be replaced and new drives can be added during operation. The drive and installation frame together make up the HDD/SSD module. V CAUTION! The drive must not be removed from the installation frame by anyone except a service technician. For a description, see table on page 33 in section "Indicators on the HDD/SSD module". 5 Handle for locking and unlocking the HDD/SSD module 6 Button for locking and unlocking the handle 7 Pit for applying a sticker with the current drive name Handling drives and HDD/SSD modules Drives incorporated in the HDD/SSD modules are highly sensitive electromagnetic devices and must be handled with great care. Incorrect handling can cause partial or total failure of the drives. These failures can result in data errors and to a loss of data or to total corruption of the drive. Observe the following rules to prevent such problems occurring: Only store and transport HDD/SSD modules within the limits stipulated in the specification. 36 Operating Manual SX960 S1
37 Hot-plug components When transporting HDD/SSD modules (even over short distances), always use the original packaging (ESD label). Never expose HDD/SSD modules to a temperature shock. Avoid the formation of condensation inside and on the outside of the drive. V CAUTION! The HDD/SSD module must be acclimatized in its operating environment for an acclimatization time before it is started up for the first time. Temperature difference ( C) (operating environment/ outside) Minimum acclimatization time (hours) Table 2: Acclimatization times for HDD/SSD modules Always set the HDD/SSD module down carefully, with the large surface facing downwards to prevent it from tipping over. 5.2 Removing/installing the dummy module Free slots are provided with dummy modules. Remove the dummy module before installing an additional HDD/SSD module. SX960 S1 Operating Manual 37
38 Hot-plug components Figure 11: Removing the dummy module Press both tabs on the dummy module together until the locking mechanism disengages (1). Pull the dummy module out of the slot (2). To install a dummy module, follow the same procedure in reverse order. V CAUTION! Store the dummy module in a safe place. If you have removed an HDD/SSD module and do not install a new one in its place, put the dummy module back in its place for cooling, to comply with EMC regulations (regulations regarding electromagnetic compatibility), and for protection against fire. Ensure that the dummy module engages correctly in the slot. 38 Operating Manual SX960 S1

Press the two green tabs of the locking lever together (1). 2. Pull the handle of the HDD/SSD module fully in the direction of the arrow (2). The HDD/SSD module is now unlocked. 41 Hot-plug components If you want to remove an HDD/SSD module during operation, proceed as follows: If you want to remove an HDD/SSD module that is not defective, the drive must be first set to offline via the software (RAID controller configuration software). Unlock the HDD/SSD module as described in section "Unlocking the HDD/SSD module" on page 39. Pull the HDD/SSD module out a few centimeters. Wait for at least 60 seconds. I This period is necessary for the RAID controller to recognize that an HDD/SSD module has been removed and for the drive to come to a stop. Pull the HDD/SSD module out completely. Install the new HDD/SSD module, as described in sections "Unlocking the HDD/SSD module" on page 39 and "Installing the HDD/SSD module" on page 40. V CAUTION! If you have removed an HDD/SSD module and do not install a new one in its place, put the dummy module back in its place for cooling, to comply with EMC regulations (regulations regarding electromagnetic compatibility), and for protection against fire. 73 7 Troubleshooting and tips V CAUTION! Follow the safety instructions in chapter "Important notes" on page 15. If the power-on indicator of the storage blade (see figure 8 on page 31) remains dark after you have switched on the related server blade, follow these instructions: All information on troubleshooting faults that may occur when operating server blades in the system unit are described in the operating manual for the corresponding system unit. If a fault occurs, try to correct it as described: in the chapter "Troubleshooting and tips" in the operating manual for your system unit, in the chapters for the installed components, in the documentation for the connected devices, in the help systems of the individual programs used. If you do not manage to correct the problem, proceed as follows: Make a note of the steps you have taken and the situation in which the fault occurred. Also make a note of the error messages displayed. Switch off the defective server blade or the system. Contact customer service. 7.1 Drives reported as "dead" when starting system RAID controller configuration incorrect Check and correct the settings for the drives using the RAID controller utility.
