1 HP StorageWorks 8Gb Simple SAN Connection Kit quick start instructions Congratulations on your purchase of the 8Gb Simple SAN Connection Kit. This guide provides procedures for installing the kit components, including the HP StorageWorks 8/20q Fibre Channel Switch, the Host Bus Adapters (HBAs), and the HP StorageWorks Simple SAN Connection Manager (SSCM) software bundle on a Windows or Linux system. Verify that the server running your management software (management station) meets the following minimum requirements for supporting the software (including HP StorageWorks Simple SAN Connection Manager and other HP software): Windows Server 2003 R2 operating system with SP2 512 MB of memory 160 MB of disk space One 2.0 GHz processor One CD ROM drive, one Ethernet port One or more PCI-e slots for the HP StorageWorks 81Q PCI-e FC HBA Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 1.5 or higher Internet browser: Microsoft Internet Explorer (IE), Netscape Navigator, or Mozilla Firefox * * Page 1

2 Hardware installation instructions The hardware installation has three components: Installing the storage components Installing the switch Installing the HBAs Installing the storage components Install your HP storage components (purchased separately; not included in the 8Gb Simple SAN Connection Kit). 1. If not already installed, install the MSA or EVA storage array using the documentation supplied with the unit. 2. Connect the power cables to the power source. 3. Power on the storage array and allow it to initialize. 4. For EVA storage, install the HP StorageWorks Command View EVA v7.0 or higher software. Installing the switch Install the HP StorageWorks 8/20q Fibre Channel Switch as follows: 1. Mount the switch on a flat surface or in a rack: Place the switch on a flat surface and stack. Attach the four adhesive rubber feet to the bottom of the switch. Or, Mount the switch in a 19 EIA rack following the steps in the HP StorageWorks 8/20q Switch Rack-Mount Kit quick start installation instructions. 2. Install each SFP transceiver by inserting the transceiver into any of the active switch ports and pressing gently until it snaps in place. The transceiver will fit only one way. If the transceiver does not install under gentle pressure, flip it over and try again. NOTE: An HP Small Form-factor Pluggable (SFP) transceiver is required for each switch port that will be connected to a device or another switch. Only HP SFPs are supported for use in the switch. On a new HP StorageWorks 8/20q Fibre Channel Switch, ports 0 7 are active. The switch supports 2 Gb, 4 Gb, and 8 Gb transmission with HP 8 Gb fiber optic transceivers. 4. Check the switch LEDs (Figure 1) to verify that the Input Power LED is illuminated, the Heartbeat LED is blinking (once per second), and the System Fault LED is not illuminated Figure 1 Switch LEDs 1 Input Power LED 2 Heartbeat LED 3 System Fault LED 5. Connect the switch Ethernet port to the: LAN that is used to connect the management station that will run HP StorageWorks Simple SAN Connection Manager (see Software installation instructions, page 3). Other servers in the SAN. IMPORTANT: Do not configure the switch at this time. The HP StorageWorks Simple SAN Connection Manager software will prompt you to set the switch IP address, administrator password, and default zoning when you first start that software. 6. Connect the FC cables between the installed transceivers and their corresponding devices and switches. Each port auto-negotiates the proper port type with the connected device or switch. Installing the HBAs Install an HBA on each server (Figure 2). For additional information, see the instructions in the HP StorageWorks 81Q PCI-e FC HBA quick start installation instructions. 3. Apply power to the switch by attaching the AC power cord to the receptacle on the back of the switch and to the power source. The switch runs its self tests and begins normal operation this may take a few minutes. Page 2

3 CAUTION: Keep the HBA in the antistatic bag until installation. The HBA contains parts that can be damaged by electrostatic discharge (ESD). Before handling the HBA, use standard methods to discharge static electricity. Place the HBA on the bag when examining it. Retain the bag for future use. servers in your SAN. Depending on the server operating system for the non-management station installations, follow either the Windows installation or Linux installation instructions. Windows installation Follow these steps to install the HP StorageWorks Simple SAN Connection Manager software on your management station, or to install the required non-management software on all other servers running Windows NOTE: Depending on your storage system type, you can choose to install either HP EVA management components, HP MSA management components, both HP EVA and HP MSA management components, or only the non-management components of the SAN management software; for details, see step Insert the installation CD into the CD-ROM drive of the server. The HP Installation Wizard starts automatically. (If the installer does not start automatically, run Setup.exe from the installation CD.) 2. If necessary, consult your computer system manual for instructions for removing the computer cover. To install the HBA: 1. Shut down the computer and disconnect the power cable. 2. Remove the computer cover and find an empty PCIe slot. 3. Pull out the slot cover (if any) by removing the screw or releasing the lever. 4. Using standard electrostatic handling procedures, grasp the HBA by the top edge and seat it firmly into the PCIe slot. 5. Re-fasten the HBA retaining bracket using the existing screw or lever. Use the low-profile bracket, if necessary. 6. Insert the fiber optic transceiver into the HBA. 7. Attach the FC cable from your HBA to any active switch port. 8. Close the computer cover. 9. Plug in the power cable and turn on the computer. 10.When you restart your computer, the system reports finding new hardware. Respond to these messages by clicking Cancel. The HP StorageWorks Simple SAN Connection Manager software installation will handle the new hardware integration. Read the text of the HP end user license agreement, and then either click Agree to start the software installation wizard or Disagree to cancel software installation. Software installation instructions Use the HP StorageWorks Simple SAN Connection Manager CD to install the management software on your management station as described in Windows installation. Then use the same CD to install the HBA driver and other required software on each of the other Page 3

4 Figure 4 Installation wizard: HP license agreement 4. On the installation options window (Figure 5), select one of the product installation options, and then click Install. Product options include: HP EVA and MSA Management Installation Installs all components required for a management station with both EVA and MSA storage. HP EVA Management Installation Installs all components required for a management station with EVA storage. HP MSA Management Installation Installs all components required for a management station with MSA storage. Non-management Installation Installs all components required for a non-management station. NOTE: With any of the first three installation options HP EVA and MSA Management, HP EVA Management, or HP MSA Management you can also select one or both of the following optional components: HP SAN Designer provides quick and easy ways to design SANs based on your specific performance, cost, and future storage needs. The tool generates a SAN topology diagram, a detailed list of required SAN components, as well as recommendations for planning your future growth requirements. HP SAN Visibility is a SAN data analysis tool that securely analyzes your SAN configuration, providing an automated inventory process for switches, HBAs, and storage systems, including firmware version verification. Figure 5 Installation wizard: options The installation progress window (Figure 6) shows the percent of the installation completed and the status of each component as it is installed: A symbol indicates that the component is successfully installed. A symbol indicates that the component is not yet installed. A symbol indicates that an error occurred during installation of this component. (The final wizard window will provide additional information about component installation errors.) Figure 6 Installation wizard: progress indicator 5. After the FC driver is installed, a diagnostic window (Figure 7) shows the HBA properties and targets found. Click OK to close this window and continue. Page 4

If the HP StorageWorks Simple SAN Connection Manager software component is installed on a system with EVA storage, you are prompted to either select an existing user account or to create a user account (Figure 8) to manage your EVA. You must add a user account to the HP Storage Admin user group before installation can proceed. (This step is not necessary for MSA storage.) Figure 9 Installation wizard: finished successfully 8. If any software components fail to install, the final installation window lists those components (Figure 10). Click the View Error Log link to open an error log that provides additional information. The message, Your installation is complete, is displayed (Figure 9). Remove the HP software CD and then click Reboot. 9. Restart your computer to complete the installation process. 10.When you restart your computer, the system may report finding new hardware. Respond to these messages by clicking Cancel. Repeat this procedure to install the software on additional servers. Linux installation Follow these steps to install the required software on all servers running Linux. 1. Insert the installation CD into the CD-ROM drive of the server. The installation CD should mount automatically in one of the following locations: /media/cdrom/ /mnt/cdrom/ /media/cdrecorder/ Page 5

6 If the installation CD is not mounted automatically, issue the following commands to mount the CD: # mkdir -p /mnt/cdrom # mount /dev/cdrom /mnt/cdrom 2. Change the directory to the linux directory. For example, if the installation CD is mounted in /mnt/cdrom, issue the command: # cd /mnt/cdrom/linux/ IMPORTANT: Under specific distributions, such as Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5 (RHEL 5), the installation CD is auto-mounted using the following CD label: # /media/hpinstall6.7/ If this occurs, the CD may get mounted with the no execution flag, causing the installation script to fail. Installation failure may be indicated by the following error message: #./install_smb.sh bash:./install_smb.sh: /bin/sh: bad interpreter: Permission denied The workaround is to manually mount the installation CD. For example, if the CD was auto-mounted in /media/hpinstall6.7, issue these commands to unmount and then re-mount the CD: # unmount /media/hpinstall6.7 # mkdir -p /mnt/cdrom # mount /dev/cdrom /mnt/cdrom If the unmount command fails with a busy warning, make sure you close all applications and consoles that could be using the CD media and try again. 3. Run the install_smb.sh script as follows: #./install_smb.sh This will install the following components: QLogic FC HBA driver HP Array Configuration Utility QLogic SANsurfer agent QLRemote (if possible, the installation program will also start the SANsurfer agent, QLRemote) 4. If the following message appears at the end of the installation, you must restart the computer: New driver and qlremote installed but not active. For new driver and qlremote to be active either: Reboot the system (Mandatory in case of Boot from SAN) or Stop all the applications using QLogic driver. Unload QLogic driver by executing following command: # modprobe -r qla2xxx (ex. qla2300, qla2400) Reload new driver by executing following command: # modprobe -v qla2xxx Start qlremote as follows: # /etc/init.d/qlremote start Rebooting the system will automatically load new driver and start qlremote. location, issue the following command as shown in the example below: # modinfo qla2xxx Filename: /lib/modules/ ELsmp/kernel/drivers/ scsi/qla2xxx/qla2xxx.ko Version: To verify that the driver is loaded, issue the following command as shown in the example below: # lsmod grep qla2xxx qla2xxx_conf qla2xxx scsi_mod qla2xxx 7. To verify that the correct driver is loaded, issue the following command as shown in the example below: # cat /proc/scsi/qla2xxx/* grep "Driver version" Firmware version: IPX Driver version: fo Congratulations! You have successfully installed your 8Gb Simple SAN Connection Kit hardware and HP StorageWorks Simple SAN Connection Manager software. Using HP StorageWorks Simple SAN Connection Manager To configure your storage system, use the HP StorageWorks Simple SAN Connection Manager software. This software is installed on your server if you selected either the HP EVA Management or HP MSA Management installation on the software CD. 1. To launch the software, either: Click Start, point to All Programs > Hewlett-Packard > HP StorageWorks Simple SAN Connection Manager and then click HP StorageWorks Simple SAN Connection Manager, or, Double-click the desktop shortcut: 2. If this is a new, uninitialized EVA storage subsystem, HP StorageWorks Simple SAN Connection Manager prompts you to enter an array name and initialize the subsystem (Figure 11). (This step is not necessary for MSA storage.) If the EVA storage is already initialized, the Initialize an EVA Storage Subsystem dialog box does not appear. 5. Verify that the installation is complete by checking the FC HBA driver version. To ensure that the driver is installed in the correct Page 6

If the switch is not yet configured, the New Switch Setup wizard (Figure 12) guides you through setting the switch IP address, administrator password, and default zoning. For details, refer to the Getting started section of the HP StorageWorks Simple SAN Connection Manager user guide, available online at If the switch is already configured, the New Switch Setup wizard does not appear.
